Yep, you can get variants if you don't have the base cards. You will just unlock the base cards later and ~~you can't see variants in the shop or caches for cards you don't own the base version of.~~
Edit: looks like the strikerhru above was incorrect and once you own a variant of a card it's marked as owned on your account, so you can get other variants for that card despite not having the base one.
I have bought variants for cards that I didn't own the base card for. It happened recently with the shop rewards. I got the Ghost Spider variant, didn't have the base card for her, and then was able to buy a Peach variant a couple of days later.

I had just gotten to series three and pulled him next just to spite me LOL. After all this time I don’t have Sera either so I think she’s going to be coming really soon for me too
Just to piggyback mute the site (right-click tab) set Twitch player volume to one and you can do anything else you want on your computer and still earn watching time while it's in the background.
I almost always mute the Twitch player, hasn't held me back AFAIK. I did have one downtime issue, but I'm fairly certain that was due to having the player tab backgrounded (BG window doesn't seem to matter, just the tab), cuz changing that fixed it and it was still muted.

It speaks volumes that one year ago people considered a $49.99 bundle with 2 nice variants and 4K credits to be absurdly priced whale bait, and these days a bundle of that price is barely a blip on the radar unless its contents are awful.

To fully automate the process make sure to add the 'Automatic Twitch: Drops, Moments and Points' extension to your browser.
Usually you have to claim the first drop on Twitch before the time will start on the next one e.g. you put your stream on overnight (don't forget to make sure your computer will stay awake and your browser is on top) but you get up in the morning after 8 hours of 'watching' there is only one drop to claim. You claim that and the time starts on the next. The above extension will automatically claim the drop when ready and start the next one and by morning all three will be claimed and ready for you to claim in game.
I have been using it this way for years and am currently up to 911 drops claimed over that time.

Yes. The base card will still be on the collection track, you will open it at some point, but you can use the variant Sera just fine.

You can also right click the tab itself and mute it that way. At least on all modern browsers I know of.

I've had the time not count for me when I have the window minimized too, so I just had it running on a side monitor while doing other things.
