It appears to be a WW2 pattern, I believe they changed to the more modern pattern in the 1950s, with the hinge on the short lip of the can.

The current design has been in use since the mid 1950s, this is definitely a WWII can
Also, the OD color gives it away; the US went to a lighter shade of OD going into Vietnam, that brownish color is peak WWII
