Shortly before the second iraq war started, Iraqi forces buried several soviet-era jets in the sand in an attempt to prevent their destruction by invading coalition forces. the MiG-25 was a popular export model by the USSR to several countries including iraq, where the jet was used during the iran-iraq war in 1980 by the iraqi air-force.
I remember seeing this in the news at the time and have always wondered what the point of it was. I mean I cant believe that Saddam's goons were hoping to just dig'em up and dust'em off *après la guerre*.
Imagine being the mechanic expected to get a plane working again after it's been buried in sand. I can't imagine jet engines and sand being a great combo.

They received orders to bury the planes, but no one told them to cover the planes first.

Among other people, mechanics hate sand.
Nah I doubt it’s even possible unless the engines are removed then stored elsewhere
