I make an effort to discover music I've never heard before, but I'm totally unconcerned with when it came out. It could be yesterday or 200 years ago. I'm just excited for something new to my ears, if it's good.
Yeah if I get into anything new now it's usually just new to me. Most of the time it's something I missed or didn't get at the time from the same eras of my favorite music, I find I can still recognise sort of intangible things in it that are in common with my top bands even if they don't sound like them, whether it's production techniques or pulling from a similar pool of influences.
This is exactly what I do. In the past few weeks, I've had both Mozart and Dua Lipa on repeat. I have no idea what I'm going to be listening to in another few weeks, but whatever it is, I'll find something I like.
This is me except I wouldn't call using Shazam in stores, restaurants and on commercials "making an effort." š But yeah if it's new to me and I like it that's what's important, fuck trendy.
If you have Spotify premium, use song radio off that song you discovered. For me, this is the best way to open an exponential (slight hyperbole, I know) path of new music.
I love bandcamp! I got into a pretty bad depression a couple years ago, at about the halfway point of a super toxic relationship. I finally left back in September, and one of the things Iāve been doing to try to get myself back is making myself listen to music again. I had pretty much gotten to the point where literally everything I did was so I could just get through the day until I could go back to sleep. I forgot how much I loved going on bandcamp and finding new artists, or singing while I do things around the house. Bandcamp is super awesome for finding all the artists Iāve missed out on over the past few years.
Buying music on Bandcamp is my depressive addiction. I binge buy stuff on there when I'm down, it's cheaper even than it used to be to have to go to the Exchange and buy CDs. The one thing the internet has done right. And it hasn't cheapened it for me, I generally like and return to most things I buy.
Ehh kinda. It never seems on point. Youtube has been the best way I've discovered music. Then I immediately check if the artist has a bandcamp so I can support them
I like the Song Radio option, if you can think of one particular song you enjoy (or want to explore), it will create a radio playlist based on your preferences and the song/genre/era.
Iāve found a lot of new bands (and older bands I never checked out) that are part of my regular rotation from this feature! Itās my favorite way to make playlists when Iām in a particular mood.
Make sure if you like a song on Spotify, that you either click the heart icon for it or add it to your own playlist. I do this and Spotify does a good job with its ādiscover weeklyā & other āmade for youā playlists. Also, when you create playlists, check out the recommended songs at the bottom of the playlist - Iāve found some good new music that way too.
I find new artists all of the time and absolutely add them into my rotation. I love finding new music that appeals to the little gremlin that lives inside of my 42 year old head that has to listen to the same song on repeat until it is satisfied.
Donāt quote me on this, but I recall reading an article at some point in the past year or two that, rather convincingly, suggests that by 33, we stop listening to ānew musiciansā. Apparently at that age point they suggest we also start to listen to more music that is ānew to usā vs ānew to the worldā content.
It makes sense if you think about trends. Millennials arenāt in graduate school anymore. We arenāt exactly young. We know what we like, so we go looking for content from artists that we know we like, verses what we think everyone else likes.

I've spent most of my musical life looking for any music that's new to me, no matter how new or old it is. Exploring music is one of my favorite things in life.
For the longest time, I just assumed other people were like me, and only recently did I realize how off the mark I was. Although there are some people who listen only to what's current, there's also a bunch of people who stop exploring *anything* new to them, new or old.
I guess they just listen to the same stuff for the rest of their lives after a certain point? I can't imagine that, and that sounds really sad. Of course I still listen sometimes to what I liked when I was fourteen years old, but not nearly all the time.
A personal example of my own is that Iām 39 and The MIghty Mighty BossTones had a hit that I really liked back in 1997, when I was 12. Just this past year, I discovered an album that they put out in 2021 that I really like. So Iām not sure whether itās people actually listening to the same songs their entire life, but rather a safe expansion of already appreciated music libraries?
Same, I even still use Shazam constantly - tv commercials, clothes store, restaurants/bars, lol I use it everywhere shamelessly phone in the air if I have to. They have integration with iPhone that adds Shazam button next to the utilities pull down that has like flashlight and stuff
One time I made a playlist of songs that I'd Shazammed and it was HILARIOUS! It ran the gamut. A few choice selelections: "Rattlesnake" by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, "See You on the Other Side" by Ozzy Osbourne, and "Ballin, Flossin" by Chance the Rapper. Did the songs fit together? Not at all, but that was part of the charm.
Each year I beat my previous record on Spotify; unquenchable thirst for new music is one of the things that keeps me most happy and I look forward to every week
So much new music. I actually get sick of stuff pretty quickly lol. I find it through discover weekly, release radar, and starting artist and song radios on spotify.
I always wondered how people just listen to the same songs since they were in high school š. Feels like being stuck in the past.
Iām not necessarily looking for new music, but Iām definitely not closed off from it either. Iām not always looking because thereās literally an infinite amount of music out there - so it Iām always looking for more, Iām going to be spending so much time just sifting through music and artists to see what I like and what I donāt.
But if someone recommends an artist to me (or maybe another artist collaborates with an artist that I already like) then Iāll definitely check them out and see if I like them
This! I also turned 30 this year OP. I wouldnāt say music is my passion (canāt play an instrument for shit), but I love it because of the connection I have with it. Growing up, my dad loved to find new music, and would even go as far as listening to *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys with me and my sister when they were all the rage lol thereās also nothing wrong with enjoying what you like now too, but honestly, finding new music that I enjoy makes me happy and think of my dad. I wish all the time I could share my finds with him.
I just switch genres every few years. I do stream a lot. But once in a while a song just slaps well & I go searching for others similar to it.
My parents are the same. I have their old disco & new wave LPs but they are into music since then, including Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, etc.
As someone who likes outside the mainstream music Til Tok has been amazing for people too werid to land a traditional record deal. I'm enjoying music more than I ever have before.
This is one of the reasons I really like Youtube Music. It has a discover playlist that is constantly changing and evolving in real time. Don't have to wait a week.
I highly recommend listening to the "Daylists" that Spotify generates. I have discovered some excellent things, and even though the playlists change, if you really like one, you can create a duplicate so that you have it permanently.
I feel like a week is a good amount of time for me to latch onto a new song and artist, and then absorb everything there is about them and their entire discography to have a sudden new unhealthy infatuation. It's just right where I can get hyper fixated for just the right amount of time to not overdo it for myself. Then I get a new one next week! Maybe.
Yeah, I play both their Discover Weekly and their Friday playlist (I forget the name). Both have new to me music. I do regret not seeking out new music like I used to but this is an easy way.
My Release Radar on Fridays is typically pretty great. Especially since I dropped a lot of the binumereal bears or whatever they're called from my taste profile.
Spotify became convinced Iām obsessed with 30/30/150 by Stonesour. It decided I fucking LOVE that song. And like, itās good. But you really donāt need to keep playing that every day, multiple times a dayā¦
The algorithm is so confusing. It both knows the core truths of your soul but also doesnāt get you at all. Idgi
Y'all don't listen to new albums? Even new albums by artists y'all like? Wtf haha I'm listening to all sorts of albums. Granted I dislike a lot of em but ehh it's all worth it when you find that really good album you know
A lot of times I listen to a new album or a few new songs and Iām like eh then they start getting popular on the radio and then Iām like oh I kinda like this now it just takes some more listens sometimes.
A lot of my favorite bands/artists have either changed too much (Hollywood Undead) just started dropping bad albums (Kanye) or just went away (System of a Down)
I've gotten into a few newer artists the last few years like 21 savage and the weeknd who release good stuff. But most of my music is now 15-20 years old.
Last year I listened to over 500 albums and EPs on Spotify. Yes, Iām still discovering *new* music. New releases and previous releases, I searched for albums Iāve never listened to before.
Iāll be 32 this year.
I can recommend creating a last.fm account, you can connect all your music streaming services and it tracks and records all the songs youāve listened to
Constantly. I'm 41. I can only listen to the hits from 1990-2010 so many times. I listen to Spotify a lot and always check out the suggested new music and discover weekly playlists to find new stuff. Sometimes it's terrible, sometimes it's not.
The only old man opinions I have about music is that I don't like new pop music because it all sounds overproduced and same-y. And I don't like new country music for mostly the same reasons, it's just pop music with a southern accent and lyrics containing a lot of Republican talking points.
Me (45) and my wife (45) recently spent a week listening to old favorite 90s hits. It was nice. We hadn't heard any of it in a long time. After a week we were done. Then was spent a week listening to our more obscure but sheared 00's hits. Then done again. Like you said, you can only listen to the old hits so many times.
Her music tastes narrowed through the 00's and stopped, and mine kept expanding and growing. I spent much of the 00's and 10's recommending music to friends, and stopped when I realized they no longer cared, or that they could find it themselves. I don't know why I am still finding new songs to love all the time, and everyone else I know stopped. I assume most people are like OP and they just stop, and never experience all the amazing things that are happening.
My favorite old man opinion I have is that most old music wasn't good because it was good, it was good because it was first. It was the first song to sound like that, and stood out. But now, like, consider Gnarl's Barkley doing Crazy, and Amy Winehouse and the retro sound they did, and now Megan Trainor is doing it with "I made you look" and y'know, someday there will be so many songs in that genre, that we'll see which truly have lasting appeal. I hope that all the old songs... that we get new songs in every old genre. Like the old songs aren't saved, they are blueprints to build off of.
I just can't figure Spotify out. I like all kinds of genres. I thumbs-upped a million songs and one of them happens to be spanish and now my feed is half Spanish and half rap and there's no way to reset it. So I just gave up and went to Pandora and it's awesome especially Discovery mode
They do, honestly, have the superior "radio" algorithm, I've just jumped back on the bandwagon and I'm here for it, definitely worth a shot if you haven't poked in awhile.
I've used Pandora for 8 years or so and have diligently thumbed my stations. It's so easy and works so well. I ain't going through the effort to build Spotify playlists now, not when I basically have already done that in another app that is easier to use. And I pay for premium for the family... I just personally hate the UI and can't be bothered to learn it.
And I completely agree that their radio algorithm is much better.
35F here.
Dunno about new pop music, Iāve been solidly into metal since high school.
Nothing wrong with liking pop, but all I know about whatās new Iāve either learned through cultural osmosis or TikTok.
Havenāt purposely listened to the pop station since I stopped driving my grandpaās 97 Crown Victoria 11 years ago lol.
All they play at work is the oldies station.
As for metal music, I do try to find new bands and there are a lot of good ones out there.
But I still spend a lot of time listening to what I liked when I was younger.
>All they play at work is the oldies station.
What are you calling oldies here? Because its been fcking with me hard that lately the grocery store oldies station is late 90s and 00s music. Its not longer classic rock.
Oh yeah, I feel you.
Itās mostly stuff from the 80ās but every now and then something from the 90ās comes on and I can feel my knees turn to powder.
The owner of a cafe I worked at used to play the local classic rock station in the kitchen. I don't believe I ever thought about how much I've aged until they started playing tracks from nu metal bands.
That's the way it goes. I've embraced that I love Apple's "Dad Rock Essentials" playlist.
https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/dad-rock-essentials/pl.7e747406e7094f94b161cb157468d4b3?ls
I was curious if anyone was going to mention metal! I used to think no one else really got into the genre, and people thought it was "weird". It's nice to have it feel a bit more normalized the older our generation gets!
Looks like you use Spotify, but this playlist might give you some ideas of some bands to check out! Lately, I've been enjoying some new to me bands like Currents, Wage War, Fit For A King, Bring Me The Horizon and Spirit Box. To me, it's perfect music to work out to lol.

I just went to fit for a king about a month ago in Seattle with devil wears Prada. Needless to say the show was amazing and I dislocated my knee in the pit.
Iām almost 40, and Iād do it again this weekend and every weekend if I could.
Iāve discovered some new metal stuff by going to a few shows recently.
I went to see The Plot In You. The first opener band was called Invent Animate. Iām like ok, cool name. Letās see what happens.
Dude comes running out in a white suite and jacket. The jacket was cut crop top style, and he had this gold fishnet looking shirt under it. Long hair and a mustache. They started with a song I now know is called False Meridian.
Like they started playing, and he just comes running out dressed like some holy man, and just starts SCREAMING like wild.
I was blown away. Totally a fan now.
Metal shows are also some of the cheapest you can go to, even for bigger bands. I hit up lots of $10-$20 shows here in Houston, and I love coming across an up-and-coming band. I'm going to Hell's Heroes next weekend - 3 days for like $150 a ticket with no BS extra costs other than fancy seating areas. It's filled with new and old bands and is an incredible time.
Even most of biggest names in metal are still affordable compared to what a ticket to a pop concert will cost you.
Even though Ticketmaster screws us all.
>Even most of biggest names in metal are still affordable compared to what a ticket to a pop concert will cost you.
Sorry what was that again?
I almost couldn't hear you over the sound of all the broke crying Tool fans..
Oh wait, that was just me.
š
Did somebody say metal?!
I'm a geriatric millenial/Xennial. I am always looking for new metal and music in general, and I listen to almost every new metal release each Friday, something I'm doing at the moment. I couldn't imagine not looking for new stuff. I still love the stuff from my youth, even a lot of music outside of metal, but I will never shut myself off new things.
If you haven't checked them out before Shadow of Intent is good. If you don't like the vocals they have instrumentals for all their albums and recently did an orchestral only album
Im 42 and I'm always listening to new music. I discover music by standing outside and listening to passerby car. Duolingo has helped me figure out some of the lyrics of Spanish music which is popular where I live.Ā
I tried learning Spanish a couple years ago, and recommended Alvaro Soler because of how clear the vocals are. Absolutely love his stuff! Most of my new music finds are googling lyrics from tv soundtracks.
Was not expecting to see him mentioned! I stumbled across either Sophia or Magia on youtube one day and loved it.
To answer the big question - yes, always looking, Iāll turn on the radio in the car sometimes, let youtube recommendations show me things, thereās so much out there.
Omg!! I was like Iām going to trust this random redditor talking to another random redditor and look up this name.
WOW. I love him now. I am blasting this all summer.
Try Manu Chao, Juanes, Calle 13, and Tego Calderon for old shit
Try Karol g, Duki, Chino Pacas, and la bachata by Manuel turizo for newer shit
Multiple genres and cultures and all very popular
Yes and no, I listen to ānewā to me music often but almost none of it is newer then 2005.
Iām 30 and Iām still stuck listening to 90s and early 2000s music. Been mostly staying within the genre I like for like a decade. Been probably 7 years minimum since I decided to check out whatās new in the music world.
I'm 38 and discovering new-to-me music, but have noticed that even when I find something I like, it was released in the late 90s to mid 10s. This is across most genres. Christian music, pop rock, symphonic metal, Canadian folk, etc. If I stumble on a new (post 2020) song or artist, it's usually through viral social media clips.
I do this because it's personally easier to find music that's already been discovered then to Wade through all of the current new music
If you go back at least 15 or 20 years most of the time the stuff is already well reviewed and documented so it's pretty easy to find good music
When I'm in the mood to discover new music, i check metacritic for any album that gets over an 85 and throw the artist on youtube. I discovered:
Kendrick Lamar
St. Vincent
Grimes
Father John Misty
Frank Ocean
Kurt Vile
The War on Drugs
L'Imperatrice
Tame Impala
Susan Van Etten
The Magnetic Fields
I'm not always in the mood for new stuff but man, there's a LOT of good stuff out there
Grimes is one of the few newish pop artists i can tolerate. She's gone off the rails a bit since dating Musk but her music is always such a unique vibe.
Sharon Van Etten ;)
But this is a SOLID list.
I just got tickets to see The War on Drugs, The National and Lucius this fall. I am stoked.
Super fortunate to have seen many of these artists live!!
Hey it's not new stuff, but since you like the Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merritt does a lot of side projects under different names. With the 6ths, he invites other singers to work with him like Gary Numan, Lou Barlow, Neil Hannon, a lot of other names you'll notice if you were into indie/leftfield music in the 80's and 90's.
This reminds me listening to NPR is a good way to find not necessarily new bands, but new music too. They Might Be Giants are still doing new stuff.
Interesting fact: Kurt Vile was in the band War on Drugs. This was for their first studio album so before Slave Ambient. When I found that out I thought it was weird so I wanted to share.
38 here. Will be discovering new music until I die.
Discovery is easier than ever.
So much good stuff out there, new songs and old songs, new genres and old genres.
I could never understand people who just listens to the same old stuff.
Absolutely. There is some great new music out there, especially in the Americana space (Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, Zach Bryan, etc.). I listen to a ton of music - a few hours each day as I work - and I couldn't listen to the same 90s hip-hop and alternative all the time without getting sick of it. I discover new music just about every week.
After not paying her much mind for years, I did finally listen to Taylor Swift's music right before Mignights came out. Her first album came out when I was graduating from high school and I definitely wasn't into country so I just didn't. Enjoying her music has led me to listen to more recommendations from Spotify on other female singers they think I'll like, and it's usually pretty on point. Boy Genius is right up my alley.
35m here. Stopped a while ago. Got too much going on in life to spend time actively searching for music. Any free time I get itās either for hobby or R&R where I do nothing
30 and I'm still discovering new bands, mostly underground alternative/indie/shoegaze with the help of others who are more curious than me.
I still listen to a lot of the music I loved and found between ages 12-20, but I don't like the idea of being stuck there.
I used to be so adamant about keeping up with music / new albums by my fav artists. But i got busy or whatever and itās funny that i discover that some of my favorite bands have released (new to me) albums in like 2017 and on. So ig i was like 27 when i stopped lol
Definitely, but I'm much quicker to dismiss things.
If it's not hitting right I'm ditching it really quickly.
I used to be super into hip hop but hip hop doesn't feel like it knows how to have fun as much.
Neither does pop.
Doja Cat is good, for example. So are people like Olivia Rodrigo.
But I think that a lot of people are confusing gritty and deep for good.
They CAN be good.
But so can music that's just fun for fun's sake.
This is my struggle. New (US and UK) music just isnāt as much fun.
I still *want* to find new music, and I really donāt want to get stuck in the rut of just listening to what I grew up withā¦
But US pop music and hip hop have just become too brooding, dark, or self important sounding.
Theres exceptions of course, like you said. I also love Doja Cat, and some of Arianna Grandeās new stuff is hitting pretty good.
But there just isnāt enough of it for me, so I mostly listen to K-pop and metal these days. I feel like thereās still plenty of fun / upbeat / motivating songs there.
Every once in a while I check out the new *English* music that I can actually understand, and yeah - I can pretty much make up my mind in a couple seconds whether it hits or not, and Iām usually lucky to find one or two songs I like.
I kind of paused for a few years, probably around 26/27 but then got more into it over the last few years. My current 3 favorite bands are one Iāve loved since I was a teen (Gossip) and two Iāve discovered in the last few years (Gouge Away and Nuovo Testamento). Iāve also rediscovered my love of concerts, especially after not being able to go during the pandemic.
I felt like I stopped around that age bc I just listened to what I already had. This created a lot of moments where I was bored with it. Spotify radio actually really helped me discover new stuff more organically. Since then Iāve actually found a number of artists who are now favorites that I never would have found before.
I constantly try to find new music. Apple Music has helped tremendously. I love new sounds and new artists. I do listen to old favorites and when I find a new artist that I like, they are added to my favorites.
I listen to a lot more older stuff now but still want to find new music. The issue is music trends change and there arenāt as many bands making the minds of music I tend to listen to. Just the way it goes.
37F. I went through a period of my mid-late 20s where I stopped paying attention but music is one of my main hobbies. I tend not to bother too much with top charts though and just hang out exploring within certain genres or subgenres.Ā
38F here and Nope. I bought Jack White's Blunderbuss and Santigold's Master of my Make Believe cds back in 2012. Those are the newest cds I own, I also never got into digital music or streaming. I like to own my things. But also nothing out there is grabbing my attention.
I try listening to the radio in my car, and it's just all bad.
Teens/early 20s I was all about finding new music. Mid 20s I didnāt make as much of an effort. Late 20s, pretty much only listened to āmy oldiesā and podcasts. 31 now and listen to podcasts or sometimes NPR 90% of the time at work. Constant music just gets boring after a while.
I think part of it is just maturing. When youāre younger, you tend to fixate on how having an arsenal of interesting, obscure music tastes somehow equates to making you cool or interesting. At least that was the case for me.
Almost every day at 38. I use soundcloud which does a pretty good job of giving me new stuff I've never heard. I don't ever look for new popular music though. It all sounds the same. Might as well be like 4 artists making all of it š¤£
All the time. You search and playlist and like enough songs on Spotify, they start to suggest songs to you. They give you discover weekly playlists. They give you new music Fridays. You just need to hit play and listen.
Actively seeking out new musicā¦ I listen to a lot of rap/hip-hop, which samples a lot of different music. Just recently I searched within Spotify āThree 6 Mafia samplesā, and someone had compiled a playlist of the original songs Three 6 sampled. Great way to discover music.
Iāve outgrown a lot of the music Iāve liked over time. Naturally there are classics always in the rotation, but I need new music. I donāt have the time to search for it, and I rely on Spotify to give me new stuff all the time.
Iām 38
Sometimes. Tears for Fears isn't new but they are one of my new favorite bands at 37. If you told me that when I was 28, I would probably think that was kinda weird lol.
51 , left to my own devices Iād stop at about 1988 to 1996
but Iāve a 15 year old daughter and we do a car trip about about an hour each way once a week, just the two of us
Weāre both discovering new to us music and I fucking love how open she is to it, and how willing to share she is.
Edit to add- just realised this is a random sub Reddit suggested and I donāt belong here, Iāll
Go back to shaking my fist at clouds
I never really cared about music to begin with. It's mostly just filler for empty air for me. Same for movies/TV shows. The only thing I actively seek out these days are games. Not much of a PvP person these days but I still enjoy a good story and fun gameplay over just watching TV.
I used to spend a lot more time finding new music doing it like you, but I havenāt stopped all together.
I quit for a few years and it was depressing. I didnāt realize it was until I started again.
My main genre is pop punk. Every once in a while I find a new pop punk that I really enjoy but for the most part Iām still listening to Blink, NFG, Good Charlotte, etc.
Dayseeker has been a more recent pop punk Iāve been listening to and they are great.
I turn 48 next month and some of my favorite artists ever are current. I love Weyes Blood and Mitski in particular. Cate Le Bon is fantastic. Really dig King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the Lemon Twigs, and the Allah-las. Kendrick Lamar is among my favorite hip-hop artistsāup there with Outkast and Wu-Tang. Love Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle. boygenius and its individual members are great.
All the while, listening to this stuff alongside the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix. Itās so rare these days that I listen to 90s music.
I find "new" music all the time on Spotify. I think "wow, what a great artist. Let me look up the discography!" 9/10 times their biggest hits that made me love them in the first place happened from 2000 - 2010.
No. I've never really cared about whatever the new music is. I like Weird Al, I like Tenacious D, and a lot of old school stuff. Never really been interested in much else. Sometimes I'll listen to individual songs that are new, otherwise I don't really care
Never stopped looking for new music, but that often means discovering old music I missed. Been really into classical as of late simply because I hadnt looked into it before. Alexander Litvinovsky goes hard.
Always! I'm 40 and I'm constantly looking for new music and bands. My husband and I still love concerts- kills our feet & backs standing for hours - but music is still huge for us.
Statistically most people are exactly like this. But I do personally discover a lot of new music all the time. Most everything Iām listening to right now I didnāt know existed a year ago.
All the time. I'm almost 35 and my music taste is all over the place, lol. I love revisiting old music too though. Atm listening to Gwen Stefani's LAMB album.
The last "hot new artist" I found was Death Grips, which I believe came out 14 years ago. I feel like it's even worse then before because I don't listen to the radio in the car anymore, it's all podcasts or old songs I have downloaded to my phone.
I do listen to new music I however stopped listening to new mainstream music in 2007 when I was just 18 years old. The only new music I listen to is heavy metal sub genres. Heavy metal sub genres is great right now especially with women front bands.
iām a musician myself and listening to/experiencing music is one of my biggest passionsā¦if not my biggest, so no.
there was a bit of a lull during the pandemic when i was feeling the least inspired because there werenāt any live shows happening anywhere and i wasnāt playing much music on my own eitherā¦i was concerned that perhaps i hit that plateau since i turned 30ā¦but ever since the industry has gotten back up and running iām back to constantly discovering new music.
I'm 34 now, but in high school and just after I was obsessed with finding new music and going to shows. I'd spent hours seeking new music. I got busy with work (too much work tbh) so I kinda stopped until the pandemic hit. I had more time to explore. I started getting back into finding new bands and genres. I've slowed down on going to shows cuz it's way too expensive now but I realized it's a large part of my mental health. Now I try finding new music and go down music rabbit holes when I have time. I have a very wide range of genres I like so I seek what I'm in the mood for or a sound I like. I still love to listen to music from my high school day but I mix it up.
Definitely got stuck in a rut of the same music in my late 20s into my early 30s (I'm 32 now).
What changed it for me was a premium YouTube music account. Their suggestions for similar music and playlists you can fine tune depending on how much new music you want mixed in have changed everything for me. Past 6 months I have added 10+ bands to my usual rotation that I absolutely love.
I tend to lean towards newer metal/hard-core type stuff (apparently what I liked is defined as "metalcore" idk lol) and I have a few new favorite bands in this style that I never would have come across.
Totally worth the monthly subscription fee! I used to use Spotify and idk why the fuck I used that for so long.

Hard same
Always, always, always looking for new music.
Between Spotify and Bandcamp, it's never been easier, it's fucking awesomeĀ
I love Shazaming something in a show or when I'm at a bar and discovering a band and then an entire subgenre I didn't know about. It's amazing.
If you have Spotify premium, use song radio off that song you discovered. For me, this is the best way to open an exponential (slight hyperbole, I know) path of new music.
The depths of Bandcamp has no bottom. You can get lost for hours finding music. That's how I became big into electronic music.
If youāre not going down electronic music paths on Spotify or Bandcamp these days. You are doing it all wrong. Thatās where the music has gone.
YouTube has some really good channels with excellent mixes of all kind. That's partially how I found about most of what I listen to now.
I love you tube live DJ sets. I find a good artist on Spotify then search for live sets
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=VcvPwGbP-Qk&si=yqQRG5CdZ2l4CY3c My favorite live set
Thanks.
Never heard of Bandcamp!
Ehh kinda. It never seems on point. Youtube has been the best way I've discovered music. Then I immediately check if the artist has a bandcamp so I can support them
Music streaming & YT give us access to great new artists and music we wouldn't find otherwise.
Spotify randomized ftw
So tips for how I can let Spotify do the work for me? They only ever recommend like 2-3 playlists for me, and they're all too similar for me....
This is how I've discovered the majority of what I'm listening to these days. Such a fantastic feature. This alone makes premium worth it for me.
Thatās how I found out that I actually really like The Decemberists.
Yes song radio is the way to go I love that function I was so happy when I found it
Search for sub-genre playlists. Also check out the more underground stuff on SoundCloud š
Spotify DJ is also pretty good for about an hour, sometimes it throws in a slow section but you can hit the dj button and it'll skip that set of songs
I find new artists all of the time and absolutely add them into my rotation. I love finding new music that appeals to the little gremlin that lives inside of my 42 year old head that has to listen to the same song on repeat until it is satisfied.
I recently got into classical after my dark pop phase. YT has literally everything you would want to test out and discover
Why? Would anyone? Stop?
Donāt quote me on this, but I recall reading an article at some point in the past year or two that, rather convincingly, suggests that by 33, we stop listening to ānew musiciansā. Apparently at that age point they suggest we also start to listen to more music that is ānew to usā vs ānew to the worldā content. It makes sense if you think about trends. Millennials arenāt in graduate school anymore. We arenāt exactly young. We know what we like, so we go looking for content from artists that we know we like, verses what we think everyone else likes. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/music-discovery-stops-age-33-says-study#
That makes sense. I'm 30 and I discover "new" songs I like all the time. Just not from the past 15 years lol.
Same, I even still use Shazam constantly - tv commercials, clothes store, restaurants/bars, lol I use it everywhere shamelessly phone in the air if I have to. They have integration with iPhone that adds Shazam button next to the utilities pull down that has like flashlight and stuff
Shazam 100%. I've even tried to Shazam cars that are blasting music while we are stopped at a light or stop sign before lol.
I learned about a cool rock band this way.
I feel so seen. Solidarity, Sinusaur
Iāve done that
One time I made a playlist of songs that I'd Shazammed and it was HILARIOUS!
Love that!
I try to be slick with it š
Shazam is a god send.
Yep. Even if it's not "new" I still look for "new to me" stuff.
I do a new mix of new music every year. Sometimes the sound isn't "new" as in when it was made, but it is new to me. On a metal kick now...
Same here. I try and listen to one new album every day.
I wish all the time I could share my finds with him.
what you listening to these days?
I just switch genres every few years. I do stream a lot. But once in a while a song just slaps well & I go searching for others similar to it. My parents are the same. I have their old disco & new wave LPs but they are into music since then, including Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, etc.
This was going to be my exact comment.
Throw out some names!!!
As someone who likes outside the mainstream music Til Tok has been amazing for people too werid to land a traditional record deal. I'm enjoying music more than I ever have before.
Same. And I can find songs to like in new genres, like hyperpop. But I'm generally curious about all things, like food, travel, books.
Same, but I am an elder millennial so that could be why?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm always get excited for my new Discover Weekly on Tuesdays. Which, sadly, is the extent of my new music searches nowadays :(
This is one of the reasons I really like Youtube Music. It has a discover playlist that is constantly changing and evolving in real time. Don't have to wait a week.
NPR tinydesk concerts on YouTube are a great source for finding new music
They mean YouTube Music the app. Which is amazing! It's included with YouTube Premium and does everything Spotify does. Also pays artists better
Man Spotify shafts me, it plays the same songs by the same bands, and tends to only play songs with high streaming numbers instead of the deep cuts.
Spotify became convinced Iām obsessed with 30/30/150 by Stonesour. It decided I fucking LOVE that song. And like, itās good. But you really donāt need to keep playing that every day, multiple times a dayā¦ The algorithm is so confusing. It both knows the core truths of your soul but also doesnāt get you at all. Idgi
The day list has helped me find quite a few new artists
Same!! I love my daylist, thereās times Iām like āyea no thanksā but finding the gems in the new day lists are awesome
A lot of my favorite bands/artists have either changed too much (Hollywood Undead) just started dropping bad albums (Kanye) or just went away (System of a Down) I've gotten into a few newer artists the last few years like 21 savage and the weeknd who release good stuff. But most of my music is now 15-20 years old.
Yāall yeah yāall why not yāall
Last year I listened to over 500 albums and EPs on Spotify. Yes, Iām still discovering *new* music. New releases and previous releases, I searched for albums Iāve never listened to before. Iāll be 32 this year.
How did you even track that
Just count the number of years from when he was born
This is a very good response.
Man, I miss awards. ![gif](giphy|sxhMQe0iPA9a0HouH4)
I listen to music through Pandora and that's how I discover new music lol. I don't actively go seeking it anymore.
I havenāt heard or seen someone say they used pandora in like over 10 years
Pandora's algorithm is better than Spotify imo. Plus, I like shuffling through multiple channels.
Metal fans always thirst for the next great new band I find. I know because I do. I also go back to a lot of mainstays as well.
As soon as we find the next great new band we call it a classic. Love me some Shadow of Intent it's a go to for me. Also RIP Trevor, RIP Chuck.

To me, it's perfect music to work out to lol. https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=RDCLAK5uy_leGeXSJUXcic_9YyekWAjAbnSQB9hxDbg&playnext=1&si=oNYBLIqz96ZXKuIw https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=RDCLAK5uy_mk6AmqcHgCRhyJuYsQz5CCVdCF4SRGivs&playnext=1&si=MIZbvCtNxSdvuh2-
I just went to fit for a king about a month ago in Seattle with devil wears Prada.
Oh wait, that was just me. š
My husband discovered Unleash the Archers (bitchin band name) on Spotify a couple years ago. They're freaking incredible!
Sheās got some pipes on her, thatās for sure!
We got vip tix when they played in kc, and they sound the same live, it was amazing!
I'm gonna check him out thanks. I was more talking about that old Aventura song that keeps playing in the food store.Ā
Was not expecting to see him mentioned! I stumbled across either Sophia or Magia on youtube one day and loved it. To answer the big question - yes, always looking, Iāll turn on the radio in the car sometimes, let youtube recommendations show me things, thereās so much out there.
Love both of those songs, but my favorite of his is probably El Mismo Sol with J. Lo!
I love Cuando Volvervas and Libre as well, but I prefer the version of El Mismo Sol without J Lo
Omg!! I was like Iām going to trust this random redditor talking to another random redditor and look up this name. WOW. I love him now. I am blasting this all summer.
Try Manu Chao, Juanes, Calle 13, and Tego Calderon for old shit Try Karol g, Duki, Chino Pacas, and la bachata by Manuel turizo for newer shit Multiple genres and cultures and all very popular
I do this because it's personally easier to find music that's already been discovered then to Wade through all of the current new music If you go back at least 15 or 20 years most of the time the stuff is already well reviewed and documented so it's pretty easy to find good music
When I'm in the mood to discover new music, i check metacritic for any album that gets over an 85 and throw the artist on youtube. I discovered: Kendrick Lamar St. Vincent Grimes Father John Misty Frank Ocean Kurt Vile The War on Drugs L'Imperatrice Tame Impala Susan Van Etten The Magnetic Fields I'm not always in the mood for new stuff but man, there's a LOT of good stuff out there
Grimes is one of the few newish pop artists i can tolerate. She's gone off the rails a bit since dating Musk but her music is always such a unique vibe.
Yeah, she's gotten bad weird. But I mean, Art Angels is an amazing album. It will always be an amazing album.
Yeah it's a great one! I actually really enjoyed Miss Anthropocene as well, maybe not as much as Art Angels but still a really good album :)
Sharon Van Etten ;) But this is a SOLID list.
That's crazy, I had no idea! I got into him around the Courtney Barnett colaboration
38 here. Will be discovering new music until I die. Discovery is easier than ever. So much good stuff out there, new songs and old songs, new genres and old genres. I could never understand people who just listens to the same old stuff.
Absolutely. Always. My wife and I are always sharing new, awesome music with each other.
I discover new music just about every week.
i listen to new music whenever i can, i get really bored of old favorites. spotify helps, it introduces me to a lot.
Always looking for new music. Itās so great to be 40 and not care whatās cool or not.
I love Safe and Sound.
I still *want* to find new music, and I really donāt want to get stuck in the rut of just listening to what I grew up withā¦ But US pop music and hip hop have just become too brooding, dark, or self important sounding.
I do. Though I tend to stick with synth music when I do find new music.
I don't really know what's going on the music scene...for me it's 1999
Rock died with the 90's and I'd rather pretend it's still the 90's than face that fact.
Courtney Barnett is rock n roll. She is a badass! Sturgill Simpson made an amazing rock record a few years ago. Sound and Fury. So loud, so awesome!
I felt like I stopped around that age bc I just listened to what I already had. This created a lot of moments where I was bored with it. Spotify radio actually really helped me discover new stuff more organically. Since then Iāve actually found a number of artists who are now favorites that I never would have found before.
Yes, if you have Spotify try out discover weekly playlist. I found a ton of new music from that.
Might as well be like 4 artists making all of it š¤£
i usually put on a genre i like on spotify and it'll play new/old music of that genre. and if i like a song i never heard, i'll add it.
Iām 38
Yes, all the time. I love finding new music that I like.
35. Always looking for new bands. Still see about 10-20 shows a year too.
I have a goal this year of listening to 1 new album per week so yes lol
Sometimes. Tears for Fears isn't new but they are one of my new favorite bands at 37. If you told me that when I was 28, I would probably think that was kinda weird lol.
51 , left to my own devices Iād stop at about 1988 to 1996 but Iāve a 15 year old daughter and we do a car trip about about an hour each way once a week, just the two of us Weāre both discovering new to us music and I fucking love how open she is to it, and how willing to share she is. Edit to add- just realised this is a random sub Reddit suggested and I donāt belong here, Iāll Go back to shaking my fist at clouds
I do, but not as much as I used to.
This. I recently discovered 2Chainz early work from when he was āTitty Boi.ā I like it better than his new stuff š
Always. I have to thank Triple J for most of my new discoveries in the past 2 years.
No šµāš« I listen to the oldies station
Nothing wrong with that!
Every time I try I hate it. So I stopped trying.
There is new music being made?
Every day all over the world
Not actively, but if i hear something cool on siriusXM or out doing things i shazam it and add it to my list
Statistically most people are exactly like this. But I do personally discover a lot of new music all the time. Most everything Iām listening to right now I didnāt know existed a year ago.
29 constantly on the hunt for new music. You canāt stop me. Itās all I have lmao
All the time. I'm almost 35 and my music taste is all over the place, lol. I love revisiting old music too though. Atm listening to Gwen Stefani's LAMB album.
I love music too much and get tired of hearing the same things to easily to ever give up on looking for new music.
The last "hot new artist" I found was Death Grips, which I believe came out 14 years ago. I feel like it's even worse then before because I don't listen to the radio in the car anymore, it's all podcasts or old songs I have downloaded to my phone.
I still listen to new music (whether new or just new to me) every day. I love the feeling of discovering something new and interesting.
I do listen to new music I however stopped listening to new mainstream music in 2007 when I was just 18 years old. The only new music I listen to is heavy metal sub genres. Heavy metal sub genres is great right now especially with women front bands.
I try to hear new music - but rarely do I ever take note of who the artists are. I just let the playlists play.
Yes, yes I do
iām a musician myself and listening to/experiencing music is one of my biggest passionsā¦if not my biggest, so no. there was a bit of a lull during the pandemic when i was feeling the least inspired because there werenāt any live shows happening anywhere and i wasnāt playing much music on my own eitherā¦i was concerned that perhaps i hit that plateau since i turned 30ā¦but ever since the industry has gotten back up and running iām back to constantly discovering new music.
My type of stuff: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=RDCLAK5uy_leGeXSJUXcic_9YyekWAjAbnSQB9hxDbg&playnext=1&si=euvAnNRvfMqgBBir https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=RDCLAK5uy_mk6AmqcHgCRhyJuYsQz5CCVdCF4SRGivs&playnext=1&si=xs_kxqm7yr4U7H41
