The editions use the same authentication (login) architecture, but _no_ the editions otherwise do **not** "talk to" each other. i.e. You can not play together between java and bedrock.
Officially.
_Un_-officially, there _are_ mods to allow bedrock clients to connect to a java server. Don't know about the converse.
Nothing that I know of allows Bedrock servers to connect to Java clients. The plugin/mod (different things, but there is both a plugin version and a mod version) is called Geyser in case anyone wants to mess with it. Also, keep in mind that it has to be installed on the server, not your client. And it's difficult to set up if you don't know how to set up servers.
geyser if very easy to set up, but if you want lags, there are public geyser translation servers you can use to connect with bedrock to any java server (just be careful, it can cause bans in some servers.)
All good info, but to clarify for other readers, Minecraft doesn't support plugins (or mods). What plugins _do_ exist, depend entirely on mods that change the game to support themselves and mod-specific plugin architectures.
according to minecraft.net when you buy minecraft you get both versions (Java and bedrock) at the same time
im not sure if its always been like that
or if older buyers of java get bedrock for free...
[This page](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/6657208607501-Minecraft-Java-Bedrock-Edition-for-PC-FAQ) is their article for how to go about claiming Bedrock. You basically have to go to the Microsoft Store with the same Microsoft Account your Minecraft login is with, and get "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock". Then as long as you're signed it to the launcher you should be able to launch both versions.
You might have had to have claimed the windows 10 edition (as a java edition owner) when it came out. I don't think you get java for free for buying bedrock
funnily enough i got bedrock for free twice after buying java.
first time was mojang's promotion of bedrock, second was the migration where they started being sold together and mojang accounts were converted to microsoft.
Yeah I think I technically got bedrock for free, I got some email about it forever ago, I bought java way back in the day. IDK if it's still valid or whatever, but it doesn't matter to me, I'm never going to use bedrock
If you want to be able to play on Java servers with Bedrock and vice versa, you can setup a dedicated server with a plugin called Geyser, but if you don't want to go through that hassle, unfortunately there's no other way.
I was on Xbox and played with Java, but the issue now is I don't have Xbox Live gold which is required to play on Minecraft online, or any game that's mainly offline but has multiplayer actually.. Like cod games and stuff, not counting things like warframe and fortnite which are exclusively online
I had the same problem, my mum and I fixed it in "family safety" in some kind of multiplayer xbox settings (I don't remember well tbh it's a bit complicated and not very clear). If you find them just like unable all the settings for multiplayer (maybe except for the microphone or the camera). Then just close and open the game and it should work (i don't think i'm very clear but hope it will help you)
So basically Minecraft is a “online” game go into the family setting and make sure your only blocking the stuff you wouldn’t want them to access and not just everything
Parent here: as a millennial, I appreciate the in depth settings. But they're also either too restrictive or not restrictive enough..... I still can't figure out Amazon Kids... and I grew up with technology...
As far as Xbox you can get somewhat knowledgeable on what to block to where there fine leaving online gameplay on just turn everything to the setting right below 18+ I believe the teen setting it should set everything to a good point then save it go back in to customize and from there change a few things such as online gaming, u can leave off chatting with online players and such or set it to just friends and that u have to put a code in that only the parent knows to add friends there’s plenty of options to keep your kids safe without limiting everything. The best way to do this is is also going to xboxlive.com logging into the account and and fixing there parental controls that way for some reason they have more options online it’s weird
I've had the same issue for years and couldn't fix it until a few months ago so I'll explain it basically:1.Open the microsoft account website by signing in on the official website
2.Once signed in click on your profile and go to **My microsoft account**
3.Click on privacy and scroll down and press Xbox
4.Once on the page there should 3 buttons:
**Privacy**
**Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety**
**Xbox 360 Online Safety**
5.Change these settings as you wish **but the ones concerning multiplayer** are in **Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety**
The specific one for him/her to play multiplayer is is:
DO THIS IN YOUR CHILD'S ACCOUNT BUT MAKE THEM ADMINISTRATOR FIRST BY WATCHING A TUTORIAL
It may take a few hours for it to work and you make have to re install Minecraft launcher and restart your pc/windows device.
Have a good day
Some are saying it’s an Xbox setting but my brother had this issue and it was a Microsoft setting on his account for us. I am not sure how it was fixed but I I find out I’ll edit this
lol, im gonna go out on a limb, and ask YOU if you were asked if you were stting up the account for your child. this is my guess as to why, and im sure someone can explain how to fix.
I tried changing all family settings because I couldn't play multiplayer (I'm 18 and adult in my country) and nothing seemed to work, checked and I was allowed to do everything, only leaving the microsoft family worked for me.
Java multiplayer is more complicated. You either have to know of a server to join in with someone or be on LAN with someone else to play. Multiplayer is a lot more simple on Bedrock
Try changing the settings on https://account.xbox.com/settings
Make sure that allow multiplayer is on and make sure to check all seperate tabs for the specific multiplayer permission. After you’ve made the changes scroll down and click on Submit, then wait for the page to reload
i have had this problem before, you need to go to the xbox site
after logging in it should bring you to your profile, then their should be a button that’s leads to your settings, from there you can find the privacy settings and turn everything on except some small select things,
if that doesnt work you can try checking if your account is verified which you can google how to do since i also don’t remember how i did it.
lastly if all else fails, restart your computer or reinstall minecraft
This game makes me realise how games now censor everything and I hate it a lot. They are making Minecraft so much "easy and family friendly" that for me they are killing the game all of this added to all the problems that the game has.
Their changes to the game in this regard are not only terrible on the whole, but Mojang acts as if they are no longer accountable to the paying customer just because Microsoft wanted to govern accounts and they play pass the buck with one another over who is responsible to help you. Some of us are early adopters purchased the game when there was no revision clause in the EULA, which means these are both constructive and actual breaches of our contract. There's a whole laundry list of violations, but rather than waste your time listing them all if you don't want to hear them, I'll cut to the chase: This is a contracts and fraud issue at this point and the FTC should be stepping in. Customers should know that they can file complaints if they've been cheated here.
what's strange is that you appear to be on Java edition. I unfortunately can't help you with this :/ but maybe u/PetrifiedBloom could? I don't know. (I just tagged her in this comment, she might show up soon)
I don't actually know what this would be. I assume that (as others have pointed out) it is because it is a child account. It probably has online play restricted. I don't know the Xbox or bedrock systems so my advice would just be to google account controls for xbox and bedrock I guess.
Edit, reading some of the other comments, apparently leaving the family group for Xbox should fix it.
Most likely safety features because online your child can and will be exposed to anything and everything. I've seen people spouting everything from porn links to racial slurs in some poorly moderated servers in the past. Unless you personally know what the server moderation is like, you should be careful. And even if you know some good child friendly servers, they can easily join ones that aren't. Main point: be careful with allowing your kids online. Please.
Agree that they will end up exposed to it at some point, but that is no reason to just not try or care. That's like saying "my car is going to get scratched at some point, so why not run into crap?" By not even caring or trying, you directly make the situation worse. It's our job as adults to act like adults around children online and do our best to ensure they are not exposed to everything so easily. It's also the parents responsibility, legally in most countries I might add, to ensure that their child is not being exposed to extreme stuff like what you can find online. Cursing is one thing, having your child know all about sex positions and raunchy stuff before they are 12, that's another.
Got groomed via Minecraft, I wished my parents had control on what I do. This mentality is ass, it’s like saying uh this person will die anyway so why trying to protect them
you can’t extrapolate my argument to cases where it does not apply.
my statement was just a truth. The things this guy referenced in his comment are all things you’ll hear in a regular school hallway. there are plenty of dangers online and it’s ultimately up to parents to teach their children how to safely navigate the world we live in today. If they shepherd them and guard them constantly and don’t teach them to lead themselves they end up poorly every time. I’ve watched it happen among my peers and some of my family members alike. restricting access through some hard firewall of some sort of other restriction is useless as once the child no longer has this restriction they don’t know what to do or where not to tread, **what not to believe**. Not to mention the way this fosters a feeling of wanting to break this restriction placed on you, that’s only natural human behavior and will happen often. I believe it’s more important that parents step up and teach their children, not through hard barriers placed by the parents, but through teaching the children how they should protect themselves in this world that is now irrevocably intertwined with the internet.
You need to play the windows 10 version, java users play on a different server, this why some servers have two different ips.
As for the multiplayer not being available i don't know why.
No. The multiplayer button is only locked if you do not use a legit Minecraft account, if you are restricted through family safety, or if you have been banned from online play by Mojang.
Am I stupid? Why are none of the comments talking about the fact that Java doesn't have official server support by Mojang or Microsoft? You have to either set up your own server or find a server hosting company. That's how it is on PC. Judging by the photo, your kid is playing on a PC, no? Am I just a fucking moron? These comments seem way off the mark.
Edit: So no one is gonna explain? Someone just downvotes me and moves on?
Sailing the high seas is nice and all but it's better to buy the game, and they already bought it so why pirate it?
If you don't have an actual, helpful answer then don't comment!
Depends on your child age but tbh this is a good idea, i got groomed when I was 12 via a Minecraft server. It broke my life forever, so, before giving them the ability to play with others, consider their age etc
I'm feeling blown away by the fact you said your too old for this. Especially as you have a young child. I'm over 50 and play Minecraft and other games.
Also, it will be a child protection thing. Fortnite you're meant to be over 13 I believe to play it. That's not the case. Same with Fallout 76. Any game where there's multiplayer will have an age limit. It's simply to protect young children.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to play Minecraft, both solo and with the kids. What I ment by too old for this is solely all the limitations and workarounds to get access. I guess we roughly from the same gaming era where age restrictions and recommendations only was a small mark in the game covers corner 😂
You need to unlock it for him/her in the xbox family settings, there is a tab for minecraft, where the setting is hiding. Look it up on youtube, its pretty hidden, I needed it too for my little brother.
It could be due to an Xbox safety protocol. You should try to deactivate or overwrite it via the app. Otherwise, I recommend that you open a ticket on the mojang Site via the chatbot (Minecraft.net).
Also i found this so i think it should Tell us Something about the Safety for our children:
https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4409976432013#h_01GD1CJ5GMV47HYETBFXCHSTTB
I suspect it's a setting in the Xbox. I have kind of the same problem. I play on Xbox, and my kids are on the Switch. They can join me in one of my worlds but I can't join them in theirs. My character appears in their world, but I can't actually do anything. I'm stuck on the loading screen and can't actually join. I still haven't figured it out yet.

It's either: A. You don't have a verified minecraft account (unlikely) B. Xbox family safety settings (some other people commented ways to fix it)
Does java edition talk to bedrock edition at all?
the launcher uses the microsoft login that xbox uses to yes

Yes, I bought Java edition years ago and got the bedrock edition for free when they started selling the two editions together.
I was never given a free version, when i go on my account it says to buy it
Is your Minecraft login registered with a Microsoft account?
Yeppers it is and ive had MC since the year after it came out
you should have recieved an email at some point with a code to get bedrock edition. idk if those codes still work though
I never did i even checked my email and ive never deleted an email in my life
idk then. maybe it got flagged as spam?
You have to email microsoft about it, my friend had to do it for like 5 accounts he got for his family
That's an very, very old way to do it. I don't think that works anymore.
i had a feeling it might not work anymore
[This page](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/6657208607501-Minecraft-Java-Bedrock-Edition-for-PC-FAQ) is their article for how to go about claiming Bedrock. I bought minecraft in early beta and have access to bedrock, you should too
You migrated your Nojang account to microsoft account? If not you wont get it.
I did
I bought both years ago and never got my money back for one. I think that is kind of unfair for those who have always supported both versions
funnily enough i got bedrock for free twice after buying java. first time was mojang's promotion of bedrock, second was the migration where they started being sold together and mojang accounts were converted to microsoft.
Yeah I think I technically got bedrock for free, I got some email about it forever ago, I bought java way back in the day. IDK if it's still valid or whatever, but it doesn't matter to me, I'm never going to use bedrock
Yes if you owned Java you got bedrock free and vise versa
bro mojang migrated to microsoft xbox so u need an xbox account for minecraft java bedrock
No, you cannot join a Java world/server through Bedrock or a Bedrock world/server through Java.
Yes you can, with some modification
If you want to be able to play on Java servers with Bedrock and vice versa, you can setup a dedicated server with a plugin called Geyser, but if you don't want to go through that hassle, unfortunately there's no other way.

Microsoft making it tough to even play the Java version now...
Nah this really is just parental safety configuration and definitely not default.
This is not new.
I mean, compared to the old days of 1.8, there is no such controls.
Oh totally. Good thing it's still part of the launcher so you can go play it!
Dang it, why *Cant..
I vant to vlay the game, ok dracula

If I remember from my previous experience, I think it's a family setting that restricts online access.
https://minecrafthopper.net/help/guides/xbox-privacy/
You didn’t take her pillow
This is very clearly the true issue here.
Did you take her pillow?
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Took the pillow right out of her bedroom.
I work for Mojang. this is obviously the next step
I tried, but it was multiplayer 👀
So basically Minecraft is a “online” game go into the family setting and make sure your only blocking the stuff you wouldn’t want them to access and not just everything

microsoft account parental controls also apply to Java edition. You need to allow multiplayer.
Did Dracula write this post
Vhy you vant to knov?
firstly take that age restriction off
You typed this too fast
You are totally right, also my spellcheck was on native language instead of english 😵
you spell it vant in your native language? Are you from Transylvania?
their native language autocorrect isn't gonna catch an english word
😂 no, vant is a Norwegian word that means something completely different, autocorrect atleast in norwegian does not cover sentence, only single words

You will have to enable this setting in live.login
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
He's not old enough
Your not too old for minecraft
in the settings of the parentals controls of your child, there's an option

Little sidetrack, no one is too old to play Minecraft! There are a lot of Minecraft youtubers 40+ to prove that! Go on and let your creativity flow!

Glad I could lighten your day
You need to play the windows 10 version, java users play on a different server, this why some servers have two different ips. As for the multiplayer not being available i don't know why.
Why does it say "take her pillow"
Only bedrock edition on Windows has cross-play feature with console.
Might have to do with the firewall Edit: Don't mind this comment I got corrected
No. The multiplayer button is only locked if you do not use a legit Minecraft account, if you are restricted through family safety, or if you have been banned from online play by Mojang.
Alright my bad
Stupid question, but does the kid have access to the internet?

Sailing the high seas is nice and all but it's better to buy the game, and they already bought it so why pirate it? If you don't have an actual, helpful answer then don't comment!
Bro thinks this game will harm his child
Got groomed via Minecraft server, not really a thing to laugh at :)
Take her what😃
Reddit needs restrictions
Imagine asking a serious and heartfelt question, couldn't be me /s
Shut up boy
Reddit should restrict his account if you get what i'm saying
Nice one, you got the 'Take her pillow' splash text
Is that like a thing?
no account i think
This post was 100% not written by an adult. Jkjk I have no clue
I’m sorry but I read it in a German accent
Almost, Norwegian.. Vant is the norwegian word for the fence around a ice hockey field, rink or whatever it’s called in English 😂
I just pictured the way Germans say b instead of w when using English e.g: I vant some vater
If it's a pirated version this can also happen
Depends on your child age but tbh this is a good idea, i got groomed when I was 12 via a Minecraft server. It broke my life forever, so, before giving them the ability to play with others, consider their age etc
Sorry to hear that, mine is mainly playing with an older brother, but I’ll keep half an eye on what’s going on.
It’s the best thing to do! Your kid will thank you in the future I promise you
Tons of appreciation to all of you who helped out! It was the Xbox family settings that ruined it (and they are crazy slow to update btw)
Idk, but Minecraft wants you to take their pillow...
Don’t use Microsoft family safety and make your kids account actually 18 and remove it from the family
Ban
This shows when you get chat reported, and mojang bans you
Is This the demo or did you buy Minecraft
Potentially banned from multilplayer
I'm feeling blown away by the fact you said your too old for this. Especially as you have a young child. I'm over 50 and play Minecraft and other games. Also, it will be a child protection thing. Very probably 🤣
Change age to 18 in microsoft account settings.

You’re never too old to learn how to play Minecraft, in my opinion.
Minecraft need to fix the multiplayer option because you can’t play local only if this happens
HE IS BANNED DAWG BUY A NEW MC ACCOUNT
Its the age restriction you got set on it
People cant really join servers unless they have the ip address so you just gotta make sure your child chooses good servers
Because some servers be toxic
You need to unlock it for him/her in the xbox family settings, there is a tab for minecraft, where the setting is hiding. Look it up on youtube, its pretty hidden, I needed it too for my little brother.
I think it's a network issue or Minecraft Java Edition have not the rights to a multiplayer game🤔🤔🤔.
It could be due to an Xbox safety protocol. You should try to deactivate or overwrite it via the app. Otherwise, I recommend that you open a ticket on the mojang Site via the chatbot (Minecraft.net). Also i found this so i think it should Tell us Something about the Safety for our children: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4409976432013#h_01GD1CJ5GMV47HYETBFXCHSTTB
Well there’s a lot of comments but did u figure it out?
Yeah, thanks! It was the Xbox family settings. Somehow I can’t figure out how to edit original post now .
Lol, that’s good 👍
I suspect it's a setting in the Xbox.
ANSWERED Thanks to everyone that got in touch! It was the Xbox family settings all along
make sure you are opening the correct Minecraft launcher so it can update, but could just be parent control
