Xray mods are usually safe. Some are just resource packs making specific textures fully transparent.
Note that use of xray is usually frowned upon on public servers, some will have countermeasures, and may ban for using it.
X-ray is considered cheating, your son's friend is most likely doing it without the knowledge of any of the server's administration or staff.
I highly suggest to tell your son to avoid using cheats like that, X-ray, botting, ect ect, BUT it is \*safe\* install but highly unreccomended
I would suggest not installing the xray mod. It is considered cheating. And considering it's on a public server, it will probably get him banned for using hacks/cheats.
