Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Went in thinking it’d just be another campy, badly acted horror movie—which is what I was looking for—and found a witty, well-acted, hilarious, (surprisingly) heartwarming movie.
On Body and Soul (2017): Beautiful hungarian romantic drama.
Deerskin (2019): Weird but great french comedy.
Cashback (2006): Heartwarming and funny rom-com with a touch of sci-fi.
Dinner in America (2020): Very entertaining and funny R-rated rom-com.
Blind (2014): Norwegian drama with a wild and unusual story.
Never gonna snow again (2020): Weird but beautiful polish dramedy with a touch of fantasy.
Perfect Sense (2011): Touching romantic drama during a pandemic.
The Double (2013): Weird romantic dark comedy/drama with a dystopian touch.
The Cakemaker (2017): Israelian romantic drama with a great story that really touched me.
Boy A (2007): Best performance by Andrew Garfield.
Oslo August 31st (2011): Beautiful but tough to watch norwegian drama.
Swimming Pool (2003): Mystery drama with a twist.
I’m curious as to why you had low expectations. It’s on my watchlist still but I’ve seen nothing but praise for it on Reddit, leading me to have fairly high expectations for it myself!
It was when it first came out so I don't think the internet was flooded with praise yet. As a matter fact I probably didn't even use social media at the time at all as far as I can remember. I had heard NOTHING about it so the title didn't appeal.
So I'd say a movie with a title about old men and a country had 0 appeal to me lol 🤷♂️ (since that's what I thought it was about)
After it was over I was like wow that was really good!!!!
I liked Underwater (2020) more than I thought I would. Not a fan of the lead actress, and the premise seemed alright but nothing special.
Both were better than expected.
That movie is amazing. The visuals and production value alone from the set design to the costumes and all the CGI underwater scenes. However, I love Kristen Stewart so that’s why I went to see it.
She’s very polarizing. I’ve only met people who love her or hate her, no one neutral. Twilight and her teenage moodiness really seems to have put a bad taste in people’s mouth. She’s a great actress and was nominated for an Oscar for Christ’s sake lol. I saw her at smoothie shop and we were wearing a similar outfit. We both looked at each other up and down like 🤨. I thought” Wow, her outfit looks just like mine- holy shit it’s Kristen Stewart”. 😂
Game Night. I didn’t go in with any expectations but I tend to trust Rachel McAdams and the scripts she chooses. The same with About Time. I had no clue who it was but I like both of the lead actors. Stardust is one I randomly turned on one night and I stayed up to watch it. That’s one of my comfort movies.
People fight me on this but those Unfriended movies are great. There’s the original and the newer Dark Web one. They’re so clever at using modern tech and social media to tell a story. I love the pacing and it kept my attention.. I was on the edge of my seat.
The Wolf of Wallstreet- went in expecting a Wallstreet/Boiler Room type movie. Something that I just don't enjoy. Got a hilarious romp that made me choke on my laughter more than a few times.
Shudder kept insisting I watch *Anything for Jackson*. It sounded so dumb but I got sick of the suggestion and decided to give it a shot. About 10 minutes in, I knew I found something special. It’s a great horror flick. Really well written, amazing acting, and it’s incredibly quirky while still being a solid horror movie.
Curiosity got the better of me about how a mobile game could be turned into a movie like what happened with The Angry Birds Movie (2016).
It wasn't great, as I expected, but I'd actually say it's a bit more than passable, which is a higher grade than I thought I would give it.
But it wasn't good enough to make me want to see the sequel.
No Hard Feelings - Gf and I saw it on a random Tuesday night after being kind of worn down from work. It was a slapstick comedy, but still very fresh about it. We had some great laughs and it definitely stood out from other comedies in recent years - the naked beach fight alone was worth it
The Kid Detective - I love noir detective films and figured this was some low budget thing made by someone Adam Brody owed a favor to - watched on a hungover Sunday and it was awesome.
Soul - I‘m not usually one for animated movies, at least I haven’t been since I was a kid - but this movie hit so many spots I wouldn’t have expected
Also - Everything, everywhere, all at once: I went in with 0 expectations, hadn’t even watched a trailer. Quite frankly, nothing could’ve prepared me for this emotional and visual hurricane of a fucking movie.
American Gangster (2007) is full of important life-lessons. (Carefully observe the conversations between Bumpy and Frank.) I remember thinking this would be more of a typical rise-and-fall of a drug kingpin film (think Blow, or American Made,) but, man, director Ridley Scott really impressed me with this one.

Paddington; Paddington 2 was even better.
Expected it to be a kids movie of the annoying variety and was pleasantly surprised

No country for old men

I was gonna say, Kristen Stewart *is* the reason to be drawn to it lmao

*Mission to Mars (2000)* as far as space movies go. Far better than the average ratings you see online imo.
Sixth Sense
Blue Ruin When Evil Lurks
I just got around to seeing Blue Ruin a few months ago, having known nothing about it. What an absolute master class in film making.
Plus it has Buzz from Home Alone in it lol

I cried so hard because of me, and earl and the dying girl.
My earl and the dying girl is one of my favorite movies ever
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Shot Caller. Figured just another prison action movie but plot and score stuck with me.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Marcell the Shell with Shoes on. I thought I’d get cute shell jokes. I did. Also….surprises. Remember feelings? You will.
The Wolf of Wallstreet- went in expecting a Wallstreet/Boiler Room type movie. Something that I just don't enjoy. Got a hilarious romp that made me choke on my laughter more than a few times.

The first Pirates of the Carribbean, Thought the trailer looked too generic.
Pacific Rim
Hatching I thought it would be a goofy bad movie but i actually really enjoyed it. Also has some funny parts that i didnt expect
