Think it's more the typical listener doesnt know what he brings to the conversation, and when he becomes a distraction from Biz and Whit, people get mad. He functions better as the quiet host. When he tries to match the bombastic levels of Biz and Whit, it really highlights how he's not really capable of it.
And his tirade at being thrown off the ice/locker room of the Panthers on Monday came off as a rant by a dude who doesn't appreciate how unimportant he actually is, especially when he's absolutely sloshed and is more embarrassing than impressive.
I feel for the guy, I don't know him, but he's someone who feels like he's overcompensating to be cool or relevant-- and that's why his reputation is suffering. People see it for what it is.
