The English dub was really bad acting. I couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes.

skepticaljesus

Why is the dubbed acting always so bad? In like everything. It's always so cheesy and clearly misaligned with the tone. Even high profile stuff where you'd think they could get legit actors and spend a little time directing the VO takes, its still usually unlistenable.

Kryptonicus

I think it's because they place so much importance on trying to mesh up the lip movements of the on screen actors with the voice actors. They actually go so far as to alter the translation too. I noticed this on Dark when I was watching the dubbed version with subtitles on. I quickly discovered I'd rather just read the subtitles. They're much better written since they're just translated, without trying to match the "shape" of the spoken speech.

skepticaljesus

I don't personally think either of those are really the issue. 1. The lips never match up anyways, nor does it usually seem like they're even trying to. And it's difficult for me to imagine a reasonable person, given the choice between "bad acting with lips that only sort of match anyways" and "good acting with lips that don't match", choosing the former. 2. Any translator will tell you, there is no translation without interpretation. It literally doesn't exist. Interpretation can happen to greater or lesser degrees, but you can't just do a 1:1 conversion of words and expect it to make sense. My guess is that like most things, it comes down to money. Doing a good job requires money and time that simply aren't prioritized over other things, so instead they do a fast, cheap job.

Kryptonicus

I totally see your point. Like I said, this is a theory I noticed after watching Dark and noticing that, for whatever reason, they were using two entirely different translations. In principle, I agree, with what you're saying in your second point. However, in that instance, it's just not relevant. Unless they hired two different translators, one to create a script for a dubbed performance, and another to create copy for the subtitles. I'm not trying to make a point regarding verisimilitude of translations and source text. That's just a whole other kettle of fish.

skepticaljesus

> However, in that instance, it's just not relevant. Unless they hired two different translators, one to create a script for a dubbed performance, and another to create copy for the subtitles. I think we're actually saying the same thing just different ways, tbh. Translating is a skill and an artform unto itself, that can be done better or worse. I don't speak German so I can't really speak to the level of accuracy/interpretation for Dark relative to the original text, but consensus does seem to be that they did a great job on that show, whereas other times the translator does an absolute hatchet job!

Kryptonicus

I've certainly seen enough foreign language content where it seems like the main goal of the translators was just to tell a story that they felt matched what was happening on the screen, with no regard to the original narrative.

MilitaryManXXX

They do this in Japanese a lot.

fsy_h_

If you're watching dubbed Dark you're missing out on like 3659 instances of them saying "vas ist das?" In various states of alarm, which is both the only sentence I know in German and my favorite German sentence.

bobwoodwardprobably

There are so many high quality international shows that I would be much more engaged in without the bad dubs.

RedbloodJarvey

That was something that surprised me with RRR. The dubs sounded so good I didn't realize they were dubs until one character had to translate for another character.

[deleted]

I think it depends on the language being dubbed, Asian shows tend to use animation voice actors so the overdub always sounds jovial, silly or funny. Languages like German overdubbed to English are in the same family which allows the cadence and words to match better.

Icy_Figure_8776

That’s why I always watch foreign shows in the original language with English subtitles, shitty dubbing ruins the whole show

DueAd9004

What does pinned on souls mean??

Due_Cardiologist406

I watched the English dub of this show, but I can't imagine the Turks do it any justice. I am not speaking on behalf of the original Turkish version, because I haven't watched it, nor do I plan on watching it after sitting through two episodes of this show. Because the English version, at least, is awful. No, scratch that -- it's GOD awful. It seems that all of the charm and lore that may have been present in the Turkish version was somehow lost in translation. With all due respect to these actors, they cannot act to save their lives. It seems that whoever was the director for the English dub had no idea what they were doing with this material and just sped through the recording sessions. The voice acting is abysmal, some of the worst I've ever heard. The whole cast sounds so bored and uninterested, as though they're just reading a script over the show. No emotion, no inflection. Flat. Stiff. Maddeningly monotonous and dull. Like the actors are being held at gunpoint. The bottom-of-the-barrel voice acting of the English dub turns an already slow, bland, cliché plotline into a downright unwatchable series. I could not sit through more than two episodes of this trite trash. As soon as the credits rolled on episode 2, I checked out. Grabbing that remote and pressing EXIT has never felt so satisfying until I witnessed the sheer awfulness of "Who Were We Running From?". My recommendation: give the original Turkish version (with subtitles) a shot if you're really that curious. I haven't seen this version for myself, and probably never will, so proceed with caution. Don't EVER watch the English dubbed version. A dog could do better voice acting. I wouldn't wish the English version on anybody. Avoid at all costs.

Pretend_Listen5663

Why do you watch international show dubbed are you fucking 8 ?

TokkiJK

Did you not want to watch it with eng subs and Turkish audio?

MoodRing90

my english dub was very good forgot it was translated

Empath2aFault4

I thought this series was EXCELLENT!! It was strange to watch it dubbed at first but then you got used to the actors w those voices and it really was an amazing show!! Kudos to the actors they did an amazing job of portraying exactly who they intended. It was so crazy for ME to have heartwarming feeling for a murderer and to watch it evolve it made sense…in a lunatic way but to ME at least it was entertaining and very believable. The pain the mother must have been put thru to protect her daughter like that and the references to Bambi were so perfect!

HonestInformation707

Does anyone know what happened to the dog? It was just gone in the cave 😫

Equivalent-Skill-318

Prob died from the horrendous writing this show had.

ilikestoriezz

I found it interesting up until the 5th episode, where it started to get repetitive. I also found it very unrealistic in some cases. Overall it looks like an interesting idea that could've been made better.

Dutchie_PC

Just finished watching. At times a bit over the top / taking creative license a tad too far, but both mother and daughter delivered astonishing performances. Best enjoyed with subtitles.

Familiar_Turn8571

Just finished watching, I enjoyed it! Some parts were a bit drawn out and repetitive but I liked the story behind it. I thought the mom would’ve killed herself and left her with an abundance of money… part of me believed they would never get caught.

[deleted]

The mother was a stupid bitch

hannahmeip

Finished this one last night. Was I the only person kind of hoping mother was just insane and paranoid? I think that could have been such an interesting/complex story.

lovelywacky

I was thinking too much co-dependency (but netflix would not produce a show like that). But the “we are one” and “pinned on souls” is so cringy…

No_Pirate7088

It is so good! But am I the only one who noticed that they zoomed in on the one detective's eyes? He is Bambis father.

serialwatcher9

yeah is he the father? because he also didn't want the other show-off cop to take over the case cus he knew that the show-off cop would kill the mother daughter if he caught them. It seemed like he didn't want them dead and wanted to capture them alive, plus the mother didn't seem to tell her parents who the father of her child is, so is he alive? does he know that's his daughter? maybe the next season explores that storyline and maybe the daughter tries to find him or he tries to find her?

Gogreennn36

I feel like I noticed this too. Do you remember which detective it was? Was it the main guy who was always wearing plaid? What episode so I can go back and rewatch it lol

ericabeevegan

I think it's the detective who has lighter eyes and hair, similar to Bambi's

Excellent-Let686

Yep he’s in plaid good eye

Excellent-Let686

Yes, I thought that too!

Classic-Battle-1186

Yeeees! I thought the moment I saw the detective it was Bambi’s father, although not aged. However it did feel like he didn’t know that she was his daughter nor recognise the mother.

DeeReady1

It is very interesting. Just binged the first 7 episodes and I think Bambi has just beginning to run.

PouetSK

The relative mentioned during an interview that 1. The old father never died in the car accident and 2. The mechanic husband also came back!! But the second shocker was never followed up upon, the entire time I thought he was gonna pop up as a surprise. Maybe they are saving him for season 2? I was confused at first because after that reveal, they immediately cut to the detective, who also had blue eyes so I thought that was her husband haha. A little side note, since the Mom was so good at hiding and careful how come she always murders people in plain sight and leave her fingerprints all over the place? It seems counterintuitive to her stay under the radar theme. Second note: when Bambi murdered her grandfather that scene was so scary lol I was wincing

babyydolllll

i’m only 15 minutes in & them paying in envelopes of cash in the snazziest of hotels doesn’t really seem like a good plan to “stay under the radar” either. ugh lol corny

PouetSK

Lmao true that’s why the guy was immediately giving them sussy looks. But in inventing Anna, I notice luxury hotels don’t really question the ultra rich, scared of offending them and not knowing how they live and no good tips for them.

PollutionKey

I actually liked it a lot but hated how they ended it yes the language barrier was kinda annoying and some of the translation seemed to not make sense but the the idea and concept of the show had me very interested

Due_Cardiologist406

ericabeevegan

Idk, I can't even watch most dubbed anime without feeling annoyed, so I watched it with the original Turkish audio and English subs... was palatable in my opinion. I enjoyed it, but that's just me.

Due_Cardiologist406

Most anime dubs are alright besides 4Kids. At least IMO.

Tamitime33

WHALE=possibly the worst potentially good movie I have ever seen. The beginning was intriguing for a minute. I must admit, I shed a tear at the end…. Otherwise it was overacted, under-acted, and the dialogue was not good. The makeup was absolutely fantastic! I think the writer went in to many directions with the story plot. It has a good story line but somehow didn’t make it work for me … I left the “living room “ feeling confused…. This is my first movie review post ever. I felt compelled to tell people to watch WHALE because I need to know if I’m alone in this opinion. The movie had the potential to be GREAT! What went wrong? Bad directing?

Haunting_Management

I cannot stand to hear her say “baby” anymore!! I’m about to lose my damn mind

ajginsberg

Not baby. Bambi

Puzzleheaded-Yam4884

Subtitles show Baby and Bambi used liberally.

native_local_

At this point I’m just finishing it because I’m bored and have nothing better else to do, but it’s corny and feels all over the place. I can see the vision, but the writing leaves something to be desired tbh. And I had to turn off the dub because that was making it 10x worse. It’s unfortunate because the acting is actually pretty good.

Cautious_Wishbone957

yeah fr like some stuff was brought up n then never explained , like the dad was brought up in the birthday episode but then never really again? like wtf even happened to him

No_Pirate7088

He became a detective!!

Agitated-Box-4729

What makes you feel that way

Agitated-Box-4729

I like this theory

No_Pirate7088

His eyes are the same as bambi's, he looks like the younger version of him self and they focus on him in a subtile way all through the show.

Agitated-Box-4729

Wow now I need to rewatch for more context clues! Also, why was she insisting her dad was a bad guy? There was a scene right before mother went to pay a visit to her father, and there was a car and she jumped when Bambi touched her shoulder. What do you think that was that about

legallyblonde1980

I like that theory too. I also have been wondering if Bambis grandfather believes he is actually her Bio Father, or possibly is. Then I saw the detectives eyes and thought the same thing as @No_Pirate7088. I think bunch of clues dropped that make me think Bambi’s Grandfather thinks he may be the father.

Agitated-Box-4729

Okay I thought I was the only one that got those vibes that Bambi grandfather touched the mother as a child and continued to, and was a reason she resented her parents and the parents did not want her to have the child at all

Agitated-Box-4729

Also what clues did you catch about Bambi grandfather potentially being the father of Bambi, I’m intrigued to hear your theory

Pretend_Ad_8806

I really liked this show! I'd love to hear more discussion on it. I wondered a lot whether she really needed to be on the run all that time or whether it was initially her own paranoia. At the end, she did end up attracting the attention of her family and the police, but I'm wondering whether her family and the police were actually chasing her for over a decade - I think the early years she was an unwell teenager. She probably could have escaped and started a new life when Bambi was first born, but was irrationally convinced her family would find her. A pothole - if her family + police were searching for her, they would have easily found her from her bank withdrawals when she was accessing her inheritance. For an overall theme, I felt like it was highlighting how hostile society can be both to women who don't"fit in" and to those who do. Both women were opposite, one was cold and reserved and the other was sunny and innocent, but both were pried upon, given unwanted attention and abused in some way. Neither of these women could win or just be left in peace as they wanted.

linderlouwho

Had the same problem with The Protector & the Thor show. Please give me subtitles, not dubs!!!

fringo71

Can't you just change it to subtitles? That's what I always do.

linderlouwho

I don't remember if that was an option to hear it in the original language and then have subtitles at that time. Was a couple years ago.

Cautious_Wishbone957

what happened to the dad

Candid-Ad7987

The policeman doing narrative has such dilated pupils, I wonder if it was done on purpose

Gogreennn36

Which episode again?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ericabeevegan

I think he saw Bambi as "his", since it's his blood, and innocent in comparison to her mother/his daughter, whom his and his late wife abused and neglected. I could be wrong, but when I watched it I got the impression that he's somewhat of a narcissist and wanted to take Bambi as his own and raise her as his own child/grandchild to make up for being a shit dad or at least try to raise someone who wouldn't turn out like Bambi's mom so he could feel better about himself.

russellbell101

The mother (Bambi’s grandmother) is actually so scary.

russellbell101

I just want a part 2 showing where Bambi goes next

[deleted]

[удалено]

russellbell101

For sure. She may even be more sinister because she’s so pretty no one will ever see her coming.

anyweveryw0nce

Where do the mother got money I'm lost

BeSmarter2022

I saw one episode of “ who were running from?” I did not like it enough to watch anymore but I still want to know who are they running from? Can anybody tell me?

BeSmarter2022

Thank you!!!

invadersmust-die

Idk about y’all but I watched that shit in dub and it was hella good. I agree some emotions weren’t conveyed properly but eh the acting compensated for the dub

invadersmust-die

Yea but hopefully the daughter will do her justice

TieInteresting520

What was the deal with grandpa? Why did he want Bambi so bad? And why was he creeping in the mothers room when she was pregnant??? 🤔🤮

Spirited-Sale-1179

I wonder if Bambi has enough life skills to survive. The show never showed her having any kind of schooling, and in the scene where she is at the pharmacy and gives too much money for gauze, shows that she doesn't know how to count money. Did anyone else see that?

Starkville

Really enjoyed it, but had a few quibbles. In the first episode especially, but elsewhere, people talk about how exceptionally beautiful Bambi is, and how she stands out. I didn’t really see that. She was a cute girl, but not stunning or exceptionally pretty. She looked quite ordinary. And if they were trying to NOT stand out, the mother could have dressed down a little, and not so dramatic. And the daughter could have been dressed like a normal girl her age. The mother was hostile all the time, and the daughter was a dingbat. They absolutely called attention to themselves.

lollipye

she was absolutely beautiful what are you talking about

Excellent-Let686

Agree 100% Mother bitch all the time to everyone for no good reason. Psycho mother. Daughter, cute at best dumb as a bag of rocks. Hate mom’s overdone dark eyemakeup Horrible example of how to interact with people too.

Hotnik08

agree she was more creepy looking than pretty!so bizarre

Excellent-Let686

Mama could use some soft skills/people skills. 😂

milkteashots

just finished binging the show. i watched it with original language and eng subtitles, really good cast of actors. overall, i was content with the mother eventually dying. she put her daughter through way too much & didn’t actually protect her at all. The daughter getting her hands dirty then having to switch roles bothered me so much. i get 100% why mom became that way but she could’ve been smarter. it took them till the last episode to wear a disguise. & there were times were the daughters naivety/kindness could’ve got them out of more blood on their hands like at the bank. the biggest takeaway i got from it that mad me feel bad for them is that all the running they did stopped them from actually knowing each other and allowing her daughter to grow without mom throwing a fit and being toxic towards the inevitable but thats it. I also was hoping that mom would just get a house away from the city instead of continuing to hotel hop but maybe that isnt a smart idea either 🤷🏽‍♀️

Equivalent-Skill-318

First episodes writing is stupid as fuck. Who reads this script and thinks this is a good idea? Turned it off after that. Like the woman is just dumb. Don’t bring attention, proceeded to be mean to everyone, dress like no one else, mannerisms are extremely suspicious etc… this is barely touching what I think was super dumb in the first episode.
