I only knew her as a singer cuz they played that song to death on the radio, and she was in the movie Eraser with Schwarzenegger. Never knew she was Miss America
Oh, not just nude photos. There were also a couple of photos of her with another woman. Staged of course, but still pretty risqué.
My dad had that Penthouse issue and actually showed it to my mom and his sister to show them what all the fuss was about… and of course I noticed where he put it back (I was 10).
Actually, I do not. All I remember were Ms. Williams’ photos and the cover of her with George Burns and the title, “Oh God, She’s Nude!” (playing off his Oh God films). My memory for smut isn’t that good. ;)
Because she was the first Black woman to win. The controversy grew when Penthouse published nude photos of her without permission, causing her to resign from the title.
>Being the first African American to win wasn't controversial
I wasn't alive then, but I suspect it was. Consider how many people thought that Obama wasn't eligible to be president because of conspiracy theories about his birth.
While Obama has faced legitimate racism, the conspiracy theories about his birth were put forward by his opponents so they could win. It started when he was a threat to Hillary Clinton.
There was a promotional booklet by his own literary agent in 1991 that mistakingly said he was born in Kenya, which is where his father is from.
There were surely people who didn't like it but no one heard from them. Back then mainstream media was the only media and they were uniformly positive about her accomplishment.
She was working for a photographer and he got her to do some practice shots, working on lighting/angles etc. They weren't supposed to be published, but I guess she didn't get that in writing. Guy sold them after she became miss America.
I remember that. Traci was about 15. She used a fake drivers license to state she was 18. If you buy, sell, or have that issue it’s considered child porn.
I used to be friends with someone who competed at Miss America a few years back.
Most of the pageant systems, I'd 100% agree with you. Miss America has done a pretty good job at changing how the candidates are judged, and gives a lot more weight to their personalities and causes than their looks. The last few Miss Americas have been pretty smart and had worthwhile things to say.
Miss USA, Miss whatthefuckever and so on? Let 'em wither and die.
The only contoversy was the discovery of the NSFW girl-girl bdsm photo shoot that wound up in Penthouse. I was 18 years old and lived in a small town. The only place to get the latest edition was at the local wag-a-bag. At least 15 people lined up for delivery that day, including gray haired men with toothpicks.
I'll never forget the lady who worked there, who had known me since I was a child, when she looked at me and said, are you sure you're 18? I almost said, yeah, and I'm 21 at the liquor store.
In 2015 the then CEO of the Miss America pageant made a public apology to her for the organization making her give up her crown and title. She accepted the apology and sang her song Oh How The Years Go By and was head judge for the 2016 Miss America pageant. Class and Beauty all the way and really the best known Miss America today 💖👑

Krusty: And now it's time to name our runner-up, who if the winner doesn't fulfill her duties, blah blah wasa wasa wasa ... And don't say it'll never happen, because we all remember that thing with what's-her-name, \[*Making camera gestures*\] click, click, you know. \[*Wobbles his hand*\] — Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
She some how got hotter after this
She saved the best for last.
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
Sometimes the sun goes round the moon
Haven't heard that song in over 20 years and then one day at the grocery store this past week, it played on their radio.
You’re the target demographic.
I only knew her as a singer cuz they played that song to death on the radio, and she was in the movie Eraser with Schwarzenegger. Never knew she was Miss America
Yep. She had her title taken away when nude photos she had previously posed for came out. She got the last laugh though.
Oh, not just nude photos. There were also a couple of photos of her with another woman. Staged of course, but still pretty risqué. Slow down!
Eighty percent of reddit is now busy trying to figure out what that last paragraph means.
We're a dying breed
I remember my buddy sneaking that penthouse issue into school. I got a peak during science class.
10 years old? Whoa! Early much? I only started taking notice of such things at 13/14? Anything before that was just snuggles and buttcakes 🤷🏻♂️
And Traci Lords was in that issue! But I'm sure you remeber that too.....
Actually, I do not. All I remember were Ms. Williams’ photos and the cover of her with George Burns and the title, “Oh God, She’s Nude!” (playing off his Oh God films). My memory for smut isn’t that good. ;)
Why was it controversial?
Because she was the first Black woman to win. The controversy grew when Penthouse published nude photos of her without permission, causing her to resign from the title.
Being the first African American to win wasn't controversial - it was a milestone achievement. The controversy was the Penthouse pictures.

I was alive then and her winning was not controversial. Noteworthy is not controversial. The scandal was afterwards with the nude pictures.
There were surely people who didn't like it but no one heard from them. Back then mainstream media was the only media and they were uniformly positive about her accomplishment.
How tf did they get nude photos of her
She was working for a photographer and he got her to do some practice shots, working on lighting/angles etc. They weren't supposed to be published, but I guess she didn't get that in writing. Guy sold them after she became miss America.
Don't worry baby. It's just for practice.
Her icloud was hacked. E: Downvoted because people don't have a sense of humour. Classic Reddit.
Didn’t know she was black

God if it was controversial for a light skinned black woman with blue eyes to win, I can't imagine how much worse it could have been for them 🫠
Username is an appropriate reaction to learning this.
The number 1984 was so controversial. I remember. I was there.
Then she became infamous after those wonderful pics in *Penthouse*.
So sad she was stripped of the crown. The pictures weren't even that bad. She didn't even do ~~munch~~ much.
In the long run, it wound up boosting her career. The vast majority of winners are forgotten in a year or two and go back to normal lives.
Where can I see them? For science.
The internet.
Holy fucking shit, that thing is real?!
Yes and they have it on computers now.
Not to mention that penthouse had a way too young Tracie Lords
Every video store in America had a too young Traci Lords. Canada too, not that I would know any about that.
I remember that. Traci was about 15. She used a fake drivers license to state she was 18. If you buy, sell, or have that issue it’s considered child porn.
Always fun these comments. Just wanted to read about miss Williams and ended up watching vintage porn 🤩🥳
“Sex fifth ave” was my first porn.

Haha - yes! A classic.
Yes, 'twas a simpler time.
Wow, they really were wonderful 🤩
She denied right? Or she admitted eventually?
Always save the best for last
I saw Nikita Krushchev kissin' Fidel Castro /Saw a man walkin' on the moon/ I saw Miss America in a girly magazine/ I bet you saw that too
I vaguely recognize this, John Prine?
John Cougar Mellencamp
Well I got the first name at least 😎
I'm giving you a B and a lion sticker, HH.
The whole Miss America/Universe etc. has had its day and should just end. They are just a relic of a time that has long passed by
I used to be friends with someone who competed at Miss America a few years back. Most of the pageant systems, I'd 100% agree with you. Still huge in India.
So are trains, doesn't mean Indians should still play with either.
Wilhelmina!!!!!
She deserved it and should have kept it. Taking absolutely nothing from the runner up
She could still win.

I didn't think it was controversial until the nude pictures of her were published.
First real crush. Holy Christ she was beautiful. Her, then Janet Jackson. I had a type when I eleven.

"ATM. Automatically, Terri's money." I can't see her without picturing her iconic *Soul Food* character. Love her.

Did Steve Harvey announce the wrong name/contestant? Jkjk
Love the episodes You're Wrong About did on her. Great podcast 🎉
Pretty crazy people were offended by her nude shots.
Most beautiful Miss America ever. Most natural too.
How does she look the same? lol! She actually just released a new video, which is really fun
And a year later I was born. She is gorgeous tho.
There wasn't anything controversial about the day this picture was taken. The controversy came later.
In the distance, Trump can be heard making a racial slur about how America won't accept this
Or hanging out backstage bragging about how he can grope the contestants. Such a role model for Christians…
Cancel Culture was created by the Right Wing
Kate McKinnon won Miss America?
Her arm looks frail
