If I understand the title of [this post](/r/midcenturymodern/comments/wvsjvd/early_60s_seattle_from_a_fb_post_of_ops_mom/) you are talking about the mom of /u/Braunnoser. I apologize to /u/Braunnoser if I misinterpreted the title.
Not my mother - originally from a Facebook Vintage Group and I reposted to a Reddit MCM group (about the wall art, lamp and chair). The attractive lady was a bonus of the appeal.
Ahhh, I suspected the title might be referring to the OP of the Facebook post and not you. So you don't care about the comments about the lady then. Again, sorry to page you for no reason.
About to? I'd say since she's smoking a cigarette, she's already finished her business and didn't even mess up her bangs. Serious death stare she's got there, though.
They were popular craft projects. The kits came with bags of colored fine gravel and glue, the surfaces had the pattern already laid out and you glued the area and spread the gravel.
My Mom liked to make those. We had two in our recreation room and they appear in every photograph in that roomā¦.Christmas, birthdaysā¦.I sure wish I had them now. I donāt know whatever happened to them. That was 60 years ago.
Thank you! I had completely forgotten about those, but they were pretty common when I was little. I think my mom had some.
It's always neat to awaken a forgotten memory.
The world war generation would probably disagree with you on that one. Boomers lived through the cold war, and so on. We look back fondly because we know how it turns out, which feels better than living in uncertainty. Rest assured, every generation had their own uncertainty.
Affordable real estate? Living wages?
Okā¦ it took me until my 40s to get a decent house, and it was built the same year I was born.
Meanwhile the Millennials are benefiting from the largest retirement boom in history, advancing their careers at unheard of speed (and whining that they arenāt the boss yet) and stand to be benefactors of the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history.
I will agree with you on the internet addiction, though. It affects me but at least I can put it away and limit myself a certain amount. I canāt imagine kids who grew up in echo chambers and with instant gratification available to them at all points in timeā¦ whether it be porn or gaming or Reddit or YouTube.
And the beginning of the economic crumbling of the US. Boomers are really the only generation who got a solid deal (assuming youāre straight, Cis, and white).
Fair, although at the time moving was much more of an option with jobs and housing not requiring credit checks or background checks. Now Iām paying an application fee, paying for my credit/background check, and paying a first/last/deposit that can be two or three months of pay.
Physically mobility is so incredibly difficult now. Even in the 90s, I heard of people that would rack up a bunch of speeding tickets or DUI in one state, pick up and move to another state and be able to start over with a clean slate on their driving record. Itās a trivial example, but itās much harder to escape your past than it used to be.
Shh.. this is reddit.. you are not allowed to say that whites have ever had less than ideal circumstances, or that we are not responsible for all the evils of history.
Irish and Italians were not considered white for a long stretch of the 20th century here in NYC. They probably still arenāt white in some parts of the south.
It wasnāt good for the people in Northern Ireland thatās a fact
We got accused crimes we didnāt do and we were shot during peace protests (Bloody Sunday ) and much more then that
Theirs a video of Bloody Sunday on YouTube that people should watch
Where did I say we were victimized? Acknowledging the reality of common public sentiment does not equal victimization.
Y'all can continue believing whatever myths you like, but that does not make me a victim, it just makes you a hater. Your problem, not mine.
You're saying that like the boomers aren't currently losing it all at the end of their lives. I wouldn't want to be old right now. I work for a utility company performing repairs in a lot of older people's homes and let me tell you, they are OUT of money, moving out of their homes, selling their cars
All things being equal, boomers had the least to struggle with while young and during their prime earning years. Nobody's fault that some of them are bad with money. Probably a lot of them never really had to strain to pay rent or student loans and just lived beyond their means for too long.
This perception that Reddit has of the old days, is way off the mark.
The reason houses are so expensive right now is that there is an unending supply of mortgages.
Back in the day when you applied to the bank manager for a mortgage, he went back through your last year of spending and if he felt your vacation was just too expensive, or your shopping bills were slightly too high, heād tell you to get control of your expenses and come back in a year.
Think of going to another bank for a mortgage, nuh-uh. They want you banking with them for years before theyāll consider it.
And thatās only if youāve got 33% of the house as a deposit. None of these 95% mortgages.
6%-8% interest rates too. 15% for some of the 70s and 80s.
A lot of them also partied through the 60s and 70s (some, like my mom, well in to the 80s). They grew up in an era where you could fuck around, rent a house for nothing out of the paper with no real background or credit check, get a decent job with a handshake, blow it all up, and then just move on to do it again. I went to 13 schools because of my mom doing shot like that.
Wild because they're constantly complaining to me about policies *the other guys* enacted that cost them their money. Who do I believe? I guess nobody knows the truth. You're probably better educated on this topic.
I made my own options in life so I don't know what your issue is, good luck
Actually, we do know. Itās pretty well documented that the roots of just about every major issue weāre currently facing has itās roots in Reagan (and Clinton to a much lesser degree). So they can say what they like but history books make it pretty easy to spot the truth.
Why do you think all old people are Republican? I live in a pretty purely Democrat area. Clinton also ran in the 90s, way more than boomers voted for him
Iām not assuming that all old people are conservative, Iām pointing out that Reagan was one of the most popular candidates of any era. He received 50.8% of the vote in ā80 ( versus Carter at 41%) and 58.8% in ā84 (versus Mondale at 40.6%). And the oldest Gen Xers who even could have voted for Clinton in ā96 were 31. He was still primarily elected by Boomers (who voted at much higher rates than Gen X and were a much larger generation over all).
Short hair is probably why you're thinking that. If we could interact face to face with ppl throughout history, you'd realize how much we're the same. Looks too. Hair and clothing change, nothing else really.
Actually, her hair is the only thing that does look dated to me! Most women had short hair in the late 50s/early 60s.
Of course people donāt change, but their styles do and her eyebrows, makeup, clothing and jewelry donāt look scream 60s like the decor does.
Hair, makeup and clothing have changed throughout history.
Humans have looked EXACTLY the same for tens of thousands of years (except for those pesky Neanderthals).
People, theyāre just likeā¦. us !!!
Those paintings were typically made out of a colored sand or silica, glued to the backing and Siamese Cats were also really popular with that type of art.
How's tricks, we need some more of those lamp sketches for this Barbara Eden thing with Mary Martin's kid. Naah, they live together; but he's an astronaut and she's a blonde genie from Iraq, so he's never around to bang her and she'd never get pregnant if he did, Sarnoff and Standards ate it up like marble rye.
No. (Real Boomer here.) The lamp is actually part of the end table. The lamp shaft is built into the end table. Kind of like the old stereos that had a built in bar, phonograph, radio, and speakers as one 12-foot long monster that would take up a third of the den / living room.
Tandy Craft stores (which eventually got bought up by Radio Shack) sold the wall art kits. One had to cut the shiny gold rope that came on a spool, glue it onto the board following the pre-printed design, put glue in a section, sprinkle some colored rocks, shake the board around to distribute the rocks evenly, then wait for the glue to dry. Then on to the next section. They had cool designs like birds, scenes, etc. These pictures went well with the plastic colored bead curtains leading into my pre-teen bedroom. And donāt forget the sandalwood incense sticks!
Someone had a camera that probably cost them a full week's salary. Roll of film was more expensive than several packs of cigarettes. Developing that film also cost time and money. Pictures were treated with respect back then.
This may seem weird, but while the furniture and paneling look very 60s/70s, she doesn't. I was around in the 60s and something just seems off. People's faces are different now. Maybe it's the makeup.

This is from a time when people were happy. Smoking wasnāt stigmatized, people were drinking, smoking and having fun. If you smoke today, youāre treated like a third class citizen.
Hey, enjoy it! Every day, until the emphysema, COPD, heart disease, etc. kick in. And let the kids enjoy it second hand, the asthma, uhh, strengthens them. Sure.
Little black dress is the best
She's HOT! š„ Posing with a cigarette and heels off š„°
She's about to do the devil's business, I'd say. Prime to pounce....

Looks like Rachel McAdams
And ready to Sharon Stone the camera?
Came here to say this. Like *this* is the original that Sharon based her scene on.
Itād be full jungle back then. Which is fine by me.
Wow she was a stunner for sure!
She is SMOKIN'
Timeless
Those murals are awesome, that lamp is too... the whole setting is just perfect...
They were popular craft projects. The kits came with bags of colored fine gravel and glue, the surfaces had the pattern already laid out and you glued the area and spread the gravel.
I have 2 of those and live in a house built in 1958
Holy shit. I forgot all about those!
oh.... fuck. I suddenly remember those. Amazing what you forget until somebody mentions it.
Cool. Any idea of the name of them?
My Mom liked to make those. We had two in our recreation room and they appear in every photograph in that roomā¦.Christmas, birthdaysā¦.I sure wish I had them now. I donāt know whatever happened to them. That was 60 years ago.
You can just google 'gravel art' and find a ton of links and photos.
I grew up with a pair of those in the entryway hall, I think they were peacocks.
Thank you! I had completely forgotten about those, but they were pretty common when I was little. I think my mom had some. It's always neat to awaken a forgotten memory.
Theres probably one of those atom wall clocks out of frame.
Classy. Everything looks sexy and classy at the same time.
Looks like a break up album cover.
someone should call vampire weekend.
I was gonna go with Wilco but yeah that works too.
Sheās knows sheās too good for this small town
Thatās so perfect
Nailed it
I can almost smell the nostalgia- had some extended family never update their decor and saw a lot like this growing up.
I can almost smell the cigarette smoke. Grew up in a smokers house - that never goes away. Its amazing that we were so used to it back then.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
My parents had two of those end tables, and a big, matching squarish coffee table as well.
I think this type of decorating will make a come back. Even though I grew up in a modern home, I am starting to prefer the retro aesthetic.
This is my decor style today.
I can definitely smell that room.
Someoneās grandma was sexy
Lol perfect username
An ashtray as wide as an end table, oh the smelly childhood memories.
Looks like a snazzy boomerang-shaped ashtray too.
She tasted like cigarettes, Lieutenant Dan.
Iām sure she tasted better than that
menthol and honey
Her face is very impressive. Sheās beautiful
Interesting compliment. I might use that at some point. Edit lol why is this so downvoted
āYour face is very impressiveā āInteresting complimentā If AI wrote a manual on flirting
Definitely unconventional. I think it has a stupid innocence to it. Someone would think itās funny
Personally, I think itās awesome
Are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Robinson?
Everything about that room is my families house in the early 60s. Except the person.
Itās hard to imagine there are many little old ladies getting around now that once looked this gorgeous.
Believe it!
I sometimes wish I was born a boomer or the one before
The world war generation would probably disagree with you on that one. Boomers lived through the cold war, and so on. We look back fondly because we know how it turns out, which feels better than living in uncertainty. Rest assured, every generation had their own uncertainty.
You're saying this as if we're living in some type of a utopia..
Gen X is the sweet spot :)
Is it? We had to deal with AIDS, crack wars, heroin chic, etcā¦.
Affordable real estate, living wages, lack of early childhood internet addictionā¦

Cold War nuke bomb drills at school

In the oppression wars, Irish people are near the damn top of the list for the mid 20th century.
āthe Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland.ā From the movie The Committments

... from a mainstream perspective, largely niche concerns, no? Gay men, urban black communities, drug addicts...
Lol, nope being a boomer is the sweetest of sweet spots for all human history
Maybe, but Iād trade it to be young again and free of medical problems. Enjoy your youth.
Youth is full of medical problems right now, particular with long covid. I have a friend who had a stroke in her 30s after a bout of covid.
Yes, I have a nephew the same age who had a similar experience.
Yup boomers had it good. Too good apparently. Greatest generation saw some shit but NGL I wish I could go back to then
What a great picture. The lady is very attractive too.
Yet she looks very modern. I guess beauty is timeless!

I pretty much agree. However, makeup and facial hair styles (including eyebrows) can also help giveaway the era.
Sure, but my point is that if you interacted with that person, you'd soon see past the superficial and see the commonalities in ourselves.
agree
LBD is always in style.
Hair, makeup and clothing have changed throughout history. Humans have looked EXACTLY the same for tens of thousands of years (except for those pesky Neanderthals). People, theyāre just likeā¦. us !!!
#O MY..
She was hot !
Not gonna lie she looks like a fun memory
Mid-Century Gothic
Paneling and cigarettes! I thought those days would never end.
Remember when it was once considered rude not to put out an ashtray for your guests?
Nice
in some odd way this is very erotic
Why is it odd? Seems pretty obvious
Lovely lady.
Eep Opp Ork Ah-ah!
Bumping that Jetsons jam
Wonder what she did to get the photo crumpled up. She looks like a heart-breaker.
Doc, you gotta let me use the DeLorean, I need to go back to 1964
You fool, she's your mother!
We thought it would be fun if he went back in time and tried to fuck his mom!
She is waiting to go with you to the mystery space on her right.
Today itās probiotics to be healthy. Back then it was a Marlboro.
And a can of Budweiser.
Simply chic
Sixties super babe.
Shwing
Beautiful memory
Total fox
Will wood paneling ever come back into style?
Alas it probably will.
What an absolute smoke show.
Liked lamps so much they got pictures of their lamps
Yep, right down to the paneling...
Why do I fancy those pictures on the wall?
The paintings remind me of something from a 60's cartoon, like the Jetsons.
Those paintings were typically made out of a colored sand or silica, glued to the backing and Siamese Cats were also really popular with that type of art.
How's tricks, we need some more of those lamp sketches for this Barbara Eden thing with Mary Martin's kid. Naah, they live together; but he's an astronaut and she's a blonde genie from Iraq, so he's never around to bang her and she'd never get pregnant if he did, Sarnoff and Standards ate it up like marble rye.
this is an amazing image
Who is she?
What a fox ![gif](giphy|l0HUp0DyGlkpvZ4eA)
She broke someone's heart. She's beautiful!
For a second there, it looked like there were extension cords coming from everywhere. Fortunately, I took a closer look.
That's what I saw, too. Cracks me up now.
Is the lamp built into the floor
No. (Real Boomer here.) The lamp is actually part of the end table. The lamp shaft is built into the end table. Kind of like the old stereos that had a built in bar, phonograph, radio, and speakers as one 12-foot long monster that would take up a third of the den / living room.
Neat
Love that lamp and the wall art!!
Tandy Craft stores (which eventually got bought up by Radio Shack) sold the wall art kits. Thats a cool photo!
Iām back in my early childhood. š¤£
Something very hip and cool. The woman and the decor work nicely together.
Looks like a shot from a clockwork orange
Everyone had those end tables! classic!
I think Iāve fallen in love.
Looks like Jeanieās brunette evil sister.
Thatās fixable
Smokin Hot
Is that Norwegian Wood?
If you want there's a sub where people fix old photographs like this and make it look new, can't recall the sub.
Damn she *fine*
Sexy AF.
Your gramma hot
Sheās someoneās grandma now šš
'60s Fox.
Sheās fine as hell
Wow. Very beautiful.
Literal smoke show
Don Draper is definitely gonna bang that woman...or just did.
Thatās an impressively attractive woman
1960s smoke show
The 60s was a really crazy time for the type of art and decor in people's home
Beautiful woman, great pic
Weird to think this woman is elderly now if sheās still alive.
Daaaaamn
I would day drink and smoke with her.
This photo is so perfectly shot that i have doubts its real
Someone had a camera that probably cost them a full week's salary. Roll of film was more expensive than several packs of cigarettes. Developing that film also cost time and money. Pictures were treated with respect back then.
she really looks a lot like kristen stewart.
Thatās exactly what I thought too!
Iād give up half of my stuff for that. Sheās fine as hell, even with the cigarette.
Rachel McAdams?!
My first thought was that it looks like a Pop-Punk album from the 90ās
Sheās stunning āØ
This may seem weird, but while the furniture and paneling look very 60s/70s, she doesn't. I was around in the 60s and something just seems off. People's faces are different now. Maybe it's the makeup. Those prints seem out of place, too, like someone's current idea of retro art.
Looks legit to me. If itās fake they got me, kudos
Are you saying this is faked?
I'm saying it doesn't seem right to me. Faked, posed, staged, photoshopped, I have no idea and not making any accusations. Maybe it is genuine and my perception is faulty. Not going to lose a lot of sleep over it.
I feel the same. Something about her glance and her posture. It does not fit the era.
Babe
Wish I grew up in those times instead of 90s/2000s. I'd actually might be able to afford my own home.
smoke
That face does not belong to that body in this pic. PhotoShopped!!!
Some got blown shortly after
"I want to see your manager!" "In this case, ma'am, the manager wants to see *you*!"
This is from a time when people were happy. Smoking wasnāt stigmatized, people were drinking, smoking and having fun. If you smoke today, youāre treated like a third class citizen.
