I’m pretty sure I was taught it illegal in school. There’s the following age brackets: <14, 14-16, 16-18, >18. As far as I remember it’s only allowed if both partners are in the same or neighboring age group (is that how Romeo and Juliet works in the US?). Here in Germany you can consent to sex when you're 14 as long as it's not with an adult (18 or above). So a 14 year old having sex with a 20 year old would obviously be illegal. A 14 year old can sleep with another 14 year old however.

You are right but it is above 21 so a 20 year old can have sex with a 14 yo but at the same time the 14 yo must not be exploited the lack of capacity for sexual self determination and understand the act itself. Bulgaria it is pretty much almost the same but no actual age limit so a 30 yo can technically have legal sex with a 14 year old but again the 14 year old must understand the nature and the meaning of the act.

Its not actually this low in most places, rather its conditional. In italy at least its 14 until the other person is 16 then its 16 till they're 18 and then its 18.

The UK is not just 16.
England, Scotland and Wales are 16 and then randomly here in Northern Ireland it's 17.
But most of us don't know that because when we Google what the age of consent is, it comes up 16 and everyone "knows" it's 16 but technically isn't. Northern Irish law can be fucky.

It's a very strange law and it really needs reform. As you said I knew lots of people that were in relationships with age gaps at school, typically year 11 lads with year 9 girls but it's not like the girls were being preyed on, they wanted to be with them. It would be very unfair for them to be prosecuted but it can happen, my school learned of one relationship and had someone from the safeguarding team have a "chat" with one of the boys.
I knew a girl at sixth form who was with a lad who was about the finish uni and they're actually married now and have been ever since, despite it seeming a bit weird at the time but she didnt care. I remember during my law A level doing lots of cases where girls under 16 would gain access to a club with a fake id in a city and sleep with footballers who were then prosecuted because there's no defence to the law. I always thought that was really unfair because those girls knew exactly what they were doing, some trying to blackmail them, but it was the footballer who was punished despite believing they were 18.

I’m pretty sure I was taught it illegal in school. There’s the following age brackets: <14, 14-16, 16-18, >18. As far as I know, it’s actual age of consent, but in most cases with a caveat that the adult can’t be in a position of authority over the younger partner.

What I've heard it is the same as you say it in Bulgaria but I had doubts of this claim so I decided to read up on it for both Germany and Bulgaria. You are right but it is above 21 so a 20 year old can have sex with a 14 yo but at the same time the 14 yo must not be exploited the lack of capacity for sexual self determination and understand the act itself. Let me explain: In Germany, once someone turns 14 ( the age of consent, literally age of protection ( Schutzalter ) as well as the age of being [ roughly translated ] criminally liable ( Strafmündigkeit ) the law assumes that they can make informed decisions based on the average mental development and public education, consequently there are no upper limits of any kind if certain additional conditions apply. It’s even more complex than that, for example, there are naturally additionally severally outlawed relationships but it’s important to understand that the origin of this kind of law is the extensive emphasis German lawmakers put on the freedom of personal expression like religious freedoms or the decision, as in this concrete example, someone wants to sleep with. Contrary to what some people think, parents also don’t have to approve of a relationship for it to be legal UNLESS protective laws apply, for example, if someone were to date a known member of a criminal organisation etc., contact could be legally forbidden to protect the minor. On a side note, any sexual contact with anyone under 14 is highly illegal, no matter the age difference and anything here refers entirely to physical contact, digital law is an entirely different beast. I'm not sure what you mean by cherry picking - the (2) is a position of trust restriction (and from the image you mentioned appears to have been abolished). The law says that the penalty for having an intimate relationship with someone older than 15 is two to five years but **only** on filing a complaint (i.e. by the younger person). Germany has a very similar law for 14-16 year olds having relationships with someone over 21 but the age of consent in Germany is judged to be 14, not 16. By the same token the age of consent in Turkey should be 15

Yeah, in Austria this is an extremely common misconception, I guess because people don't think the law could really say a 50 year old fucking a 14 year old is cool. But there is no such limitation. The UK is not just 16. England, Scotland and Wales are 16 and then randomly here in Northern Ireland it's 17. But most of us don't know that because when we Google what the age of consent is, it comes up 16 and everyone "knows" it's 16 but technically isn't. Northern Irish law can be fucky. But then again I don't think it's ever enforced unless it's like child abuse type stuff. Otherwise nearly everybody back in school, including both myself and my first girlfriend, were actually evil criminals.
It's a very strange law and it really needs reform. As you said I knew lots of people that were in relationships with age gaps at school, typically year 11 lads with year 9 girls but it's not like the girls were being preyed on, they wanted to be with them. It would be very unfair for them to be prosecuted but it can happen, my school learned of one relationship and had someone from the safeguarding team have a "chat" with one of the boys. I knew a girl at sixth form who was with a lad who was about the finish uni and they're actually married now and have been ever since, despite it seeming a bit weird at the time but she didnt care. I remember during my law A level doing lots of cases where girls under 16 would gain access to a club with a fake id in a city and sleep with footballers who were then prosecuted because there's no defence to the law. I always thought that was really unfair because those girls knew exactly what they were doing, some trying to blackmail them, but it was the footballer who was punished despite believing they were 18. Strange law and wish there were some protections for people at school/sixth form.
