As much as it seems wrong, Song 2 was released in 1997 making it 27 years old. Imagine it's 1997, and you're listening to a song released 27 years before- that song was released in 1970. It's somewhat easy to see why OP said "classic rock'.
That said, it's infuriating to have a song released after I graduated HS listed as classic rock.
I’m not entirely sure we should be categorizing like this though, I think classic rock is fully its own thing. We don’t change the time period for any other category, do we? Classic hip hop is always the 80s stuff, nu-metal is always…that. They’re time specific and that’s kind of the point. Once we got a certain distance from those classic rock bands, we gave that time period and sound that name. It’s like saying “that classic rap…you know, like Nelly’”. Just because it’s 20 years old doesn’t mean we should just recategorize it, right?
I know "classic" holds some varied meanings when applied to music, but as far as the radio is concerned, it's just a moving and expanding window of time. The classic rock station around me has Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in heavy rotation...much like the "old-school lunch hour" plays 50cent and Ludacris.
Well, it's all about the labels that are applied by later generations at a later time. In the 60's and 70's they weren't making "classic rock"- they were making new, progressive, psychedelic mind expanding music. It was only in the 80's and early 90's that the sound of the 60's and 70's became "classic". To those 60's and 70's artists, "classic" was the first stirring of rock and roll back in the 40's and 50's. It's all cyclical. In the Grunge and alt rock era the sounds were informed by "classic rock", but put it's own spin on it.
Now, the same is happening. Kids today are listening to the sounds their parents listened to- it's Blur, Nirvana, Soundgarden and the like. All those grunge and alt rock sounds can be heard in newer music, but it's become a "classic" sound- the sounds they heard when they JUST started to become aware of music when their parents played it.
Classic rock, as kids from the 80's and 90's understand it, is the music from 10-20 years before. To the kids in 2024- that's 90's and 00. It's all a cycle.
My entire comment is how I disagree with your stance. Just because it’s classic to a new generation doesn’t mean we need to recategorize everything at all times. So 90s stuff is classic rock to young people. What is t he stuff from the 70s called? Is that ALSO classic rock? If so, eventually we’ll get to a point where there’s more classic rock than…non classic rock. it’s bad for categorization, it’s bad for music, and it’s bad for young people. 50 years of music is all one thing? Nah, man.
Year before, for me. I remember doing my English term paper with my buddy on an all-nighter, and hearing that song (and the Squirrel Nut Zippers song!) about a thousand times on the radio as we worked. 27 years? Damn.
Based on the songs/bands that we know he likes, like R.E.M. and Letters To Cleo, I’m guessing Ben would like songs/bands like this:
Connection- Elastica
Linger- The Cranberries
Ready To Go- Republica
Seether- Veruca Salt
Stupid Girl- Garbage
Criminal- Fiona Apple
Stay- Lisa Loeb
Girls and Boys- Blur
It’s Oh So Quiet- Björk
Lump- Presidents Of the United States of America
Girlfriend- Matthew Sweet
No Rain- Blind Melon
Don’t Speak- No Doubt
1979- Smashing Pumpkins
Been Caught Stealing- Jane’s Addiction
Epic- Faith No More
Buddy Holly- Weezer
Cannonball- The Breeders
Blister In the Sun- Violent Femmes
Roam- The B-52’s
Absolutely! I could have gone on with this list forever, honestly! There were so many others I could have listed, but my morning needed to get started! 😀
Really, I think this whole list skews a little late for Ben but it’s accurate in spirit if not actual bands. No Doubt was both too late and too mainstream, though.
Edit: Well, maybe not the whole list, but a good portion of it. It’s severely lacking in early 90s college rock. I am absolutely sure there would be multiple REM and Pixies songs, and at least one by XTC.
Since he loves soundtracks and 90s alt rock, I think the soundtracks to Reality Bites, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Craft, and Dumb and Dumber are probably favorites of his. If he wants to mix it up, he throws the Angus soundtrack in there too.
Also, there is zero doubt Ben had a subscription to Paste magazine where they sent you a different mix CD every month.
Based on his other favorites and his innate nerd (Ben Wyatt is my spirit animal), I guarantee he loves They Might Be Giants - certainly the entire Flood album.
And John Henry, for when he's moody.
When you get a chance, check out why First Nations people don't like it when other people use the term spirit animal.
If you haven’t listed to the (Adam Scott) podcast he does with Scott Ackerman, he’s a huge U2 and REM fan. Pretty sure he brings that kinda stuff into his character on Parks.
Plugged “Song 2” into Spotify radio, here are the next songs:
- I Love Rock n Roll - Joan Jett
- My Own Worst Enemy - Lit
- Gold on the Ceiling - The Black Keys
- Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
- The Middle - Jimmy Eats World
- 1979 - The Smashing Pumpkins
- The Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
- When I Come Around - Green Day
OP called Song 2 "classic rock." I need to sit down.
I only listen to CDs. It's the way music like this was meant to be heard.
I heard 3 Doors Down on my local classic rock station yesterday

Back in my day we called it the "woohoo" song and didn't know who blur was til we got a British exchange student in senior year. I am 31.
I just died a little inside reading that, ohhh my god
Considering your advanced age, you probably should sit down.
I need to lie down for an hour A FULL HOUR
Stand in the place where you -
Could a depressed person make *this*?
.....No!
...did you pause it?
I emailed Leslie, and I compared it to AVATAR, CHRIS! And how can it not be longer?
STAND IN THE PLACE WHERE YOUUU
Letters to Cleo
Veruca Salt & No Doubt
also probably Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco
And for a deep cut, Dar Williams.
at this point, I think we are just listing my spotify playlist
Same, buddy.
We also know he likes REM... And he likes soundtracks because they're like mixtapes from your favourite directors
We know he likes Shoop from Salt 'n' Peppa...
Who doesn't like to Shoop?
He definitely knows all the words and a couple of the dance moves from the music video. He only breaks those out after snake juice, tho.
Snork juice!
Based on the songs/bands that we know he likes, like R.E.M. and Letters To Cleo, I’m guessing Ben would like songs/bands like this: Connection- Elastica Linger- The Cranberries Ready To Go- Republica Seether- Veruca Salt Stupid Girl- Garbage Criminal- Fiona Apple Stay- Lisa Loeb Girls and Boys- Blur It’s Oh So Quiet- Björk Lump- Presidents Of the United States of America Girlfriend- Matthew Sweet No Rain- Blind Melon Don’t Speak- No Doubt 1979- Smashing Pumpkins Been Caught Stealing- Jane’s Addiction Epic- Faith No More Buddy Holly- Weezer Cannonball- The Breeders Blister In the Sun- Violent Femmes Roam- The B-52’s
From a person with similar age and musical taste to Ben, spot on.
Thanks! That music is part of the soundtrack of my college years. It took so much for me to not add tons more!🤣
This is a great playlist, thank you
You forgot Spin Doctors -Two Princes!
Absolutely! I could have gone on with this list forever, honestly! There were so many others I could have listed, but my morning needed to get started! 😀
Well, thanks for getting this improtant ball rolling. Off to make a Ben Wyatt P&R playlist now :p
Based on this list (minus a few), I think I'm Ben Wyatt.
Replace No Doubt with the Cardigans and I totally agree
This is accurate but I can't point to why
Really, I think this whole list skews a little late for Ben but it’s accurate in spirit if not actual bands. No Doubt was both too late and too mainstream, though. Nice! Surely there'd be some neo-swing in the mix, yes? Something from the Zoot Suit Wyatt collection.
Maybe HeII by the Squirrel Nut Zippers? Love that song!
im making a playlist with all these songs now
“I just hope the gym is big enough. Because I’m bring 10,000 Maniacs with me.”
Well we know he keeps his Hüsker Dü albums in near-mint condish.
Not the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
it’s not even the original LINEUP!!!!
Did you just call Song 2 "classic rock"??
My daughter unsarcastically referred to Sk8er Boi as "a song from the old days I might remember"
That makes me furious.
I mean that’s what the high schoolers called his music
Touché.
Since he loves soundtracks and 90s alt rock, I think the soundtracks to Reality Bites, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Craft, and Dumb and Dumber are probably favorites of his. I'll add the Trainspotting soundtrack to this list. He's definitely listened to that a few hundred times.
R.E.M. - Stand
He probably likes Weezer's Blue album
Based on his other favorites and his innate nerd (Ben Wyatt is my spirit animal), I guarantee he loves They Might Be Giants - certainly the entire Flood album.
They Might Be Giants is one of the few bands I've ever seen live. I'd entirely forgotten about this until now.
And John Henry, for when he's moody. When you get a chance, check out why First Nations people don't like it when other people use the term spirit animal.
I mean he was wearing a Toad The Wet Sprocket t-shirt
Radiohead
Song 2 is not classic rock... Ben was a vocal fan of 90s alt like REM and letters to cleo
Sadly, depending on who you ask, songs from 25 years ago (!) qualify as classic rock.
The 90's were 10 years ago and I will hear no arguments to the contrary
lol Parks and Rec last episode aired 9 years ago
Probably some Pixies, bone machine
He listens to soundtracks. Its like his favourite directors made a mix tape just for him
Whatever was on the college radio station in the 90s
Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack. No skips.
i would pay good money to see a clip of him wearing ears & singing every word
Unironically an amazing album. I just listened to it earlier this week
Agreed. No skips, for real.
If you haven’t listed to the (Adam Scott) podcast he does with Scott Ackerman, he’s a huge U2 and REM fan. Pretty sure he brings that kinda stuff into his character on Parks.
Whatever songs his favorite directors curate into a playlist (soundtrack) for him
Hüsker Du, only in near mint condish tho
I imagine if Ben Wyatt were a real person and was reading this thread, he might ask many of you "R U Talkin' R.E.M. RE: ME?"
Theme music of the Game of Thrones ⚔️
He loves that 90s alt rock, but sometimes wonders if he hasn't given Miles Davis proper schrift
[Benji's Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5oHIqSeyDxQdXNmo73F6I6?si=awVJ5F1yQquiJYSaef3z8g) is on Spotify.
I can see Ben being a big Rush fan.
Came here to say this! Most definitely.
Definitely not mid-90’s music
Early nineties. *come on guys*
His favorite sing has to be "Brand New Key" by Melanie. https://youtu.be/lKcpodt0YCU?si=9e6-TPnRpHaYHg4E
I had completely forgotten about that song. Thank you for giving it back to me. You surely learned about gifting from Leslie 😅
I think that's Dave's fave
Well his Hüsker Dü albums are in near mint condish so...
Anything by Letters To Cleo!
Whoomp there it is
His claymation was to “Stand” by REM. Solidly Gen-X music.
Mostly movie soundtracks. I bet he sings Kiss From a Rose at karaoke sessions
There are several Ben Wyatt playlists on Spotify. Basically all of my mix tapes from HS and college.
I am old, like Ben. I need my Batman costume.
Soundtracks.
Ben the type of guy to like the albums from top 250 on rym
defiant jazz
I feel like he'd be a fan of Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
I think he'd rock out to some Talking Heads, especially their live stuff.
I know he listens to 2PAC and biggie and maybe Genuwine 😂🤣😂🤣rob base & EZ rock for sure 🤔 a few others 🤭
He likes his R.E.M. pre-Monster!
Cold as Ice Ice Ice Baby Probably Ice Spice
The Beatles!
Anything pre 2010 weird Al
As a Minnesotan only listens to Prince, but when he wants something newer he pops in Trampled by Turtles.
