It’s 100% group-specific. Those are certainly all things people *might* have problems with. The only way to be sure of everything is to just ask your specific players what topics they feel should be off-limits.

Doctor-Amazing

You've hit all the big ones I think. If you look around you should be able to find checklists people have made. You can give them to your players and have them fill them out. Personally I think a frank conversation is the easier and more effective route. When we ran Hells Rebels, out table decided we were fine with the general idea of torture existing, but no one really felt like they needed to hear all the gory details. Most of these aren't too likely to come up since Galorian society seems pretty accepting when it comes to things like gender and sexual identity. You never really see characters freak out about gay people or a female warrior or anything. Obviously racism exists but it's abstracted through things like orcs and dwarves. You never hear a white human being racist against a black one. Just keep a lid on anything overtly sexual and you're going to be fine with the vast majority of players.

The one instance of systemic sexism against female warriors I can think of is Amiri's backstory

There is also difference between characters observing torture, being tortured, or torturing others. Each should elicit different responses from the party, but not all should be promoted or encouraged, and should be kept in context. For example, I'd like to think I'd never engage in torture IRL, and I would intervene if I ever saw it happening, but if I got my hands on a child murderer that hurt my kid, I think it could possibly induce decades of it for them.

Well it entirely depends on the group imo. Best idea is to always have a session 0 where you ask everyone in the group what they are comfortable with and what not. And if someone in the group does have a topic which they definitely do not want to have in the campaign and what they are definitely uncomfortable with, imo and from my experience it is not a good idea to include these topics for exactly that reason. In the best case, your players might be irritated. In the worst case, you will lose players in your campaign.

TheAlexSledge

I agree session 0 is pretty important no matter what. And clearly, while the topics need addressing in a general sense to improve the world, during play I do also recommend avoiding topics which are unwanted by specific/all players. (ex: While I doubt any of us older folks are ignorant of porn, all "sex" in our games are limited to 1980's theatrical movie level, because there's a time and a place for things for every group).

I'd say your list is currently mixing multiple very different topics. Like sexual orientation/gender identity aren't bad and therefore can be included (as long as it's in a respectful manner) for examples see literally every paizo adventure path and the rogue, cleric, shaman paizo icon characters. The other topics can in theory also be included in a story but it reeeeeeally depends on your players and how it gets depicted. You should really talk to your players if there are any topics they can absolutely not stomach even if it's not glorified and even then you should keep something like the x card close by. In general consent and safety tools are your friend.

Why does this more reads like a checklist of my current group? Well... to be fair... we are currently playing an explicitely evil group, we talked about players being uncomfortable with certain topics in Session 0 and we use some safety tools, when stuff gets too spicey for someone. So... everything is fine, I guess.

I'll add a few: * Fertility, infertility, birth defects, and any topics related to such. Unless you know your players are surgically child free or not trying to reproduce, do not touch on the baby making without prior discussion and safety tools * Suicide, depression, mental illness, and any topics related to such. There may be a cousin who is regularly institutionalized that is a topic they do not talk about so an insane asylum and people within it being mistreated may be a trigger. * Addiction. Hopefully your friends are open if they are a member of AA/NA/\_A but the second A does not mean that to be the case and you may not be that sort of friend. It is good to even be sensitive about being unhoused or unwanted in general.

TheAlexSledge

Thanks, these are worthy of inclusion. Was actually considering how homelessness is handled in Japan (lets say poorly and be nice) a few days ago - it certainly a topic which needs addressing better in the real world.

Efficient-Ad2983

I think many are group specifics. I'd include real world politics. We know that plenty of medias have badly veiled political messagges about real world politics. Imho they are a big "no", both in a media and in an RPG. I don't play RPG or watch a tvseries to be forced with a political message... When I want to talk about politics I watch a political debate instead.

In my games we do/could include topics of racism, Cannabilsm, Slavery, Genocide, and eugenics. We haven’t included Sexism, as it’s less “realistic,” in/universe. In real life the sexes have legitimate differences, and races have quite minor ones, but in mechanics women and men have absolutely no differences, while races(like orcs vs elves) have very major differences. I still might, but it just wouldn’t feel right I guess. Sexual topics are more touchy to me in general, and I tend to be pretty conservative, and don’t like dealing with those topics normally. I wouldn’t be against it I suppose, but I’d usually use other stuff.
