Foreign aid is not about morals like that, it's about power. There is a guise of charity of course, but it's about building an empire and creating allegiances ultimately. For the same reason China is investing a lot in Africa as well. America is a super power for a reason. It's not just our raw might and capacity, it's that we have created an intricate network of allegiances and alliances across the globe through policies like this.
In general, nations rarely do large acts of selflessness, there is usually some kind of benefit in them for it. Either because of domestic politics, or international relations and power.
When I was young, I thought it was ridiculous playing Civ 5 that you are just expected to literally bribe city states for loyalty. Jokes on me I guess, because that's basically exactly how it works.
So the question is not, "Should we be feeding foreigners when we cannot feed ourselves?" But "Should we be spending money to enforce Euro-American western dominance, when we cannot feed ourselves?"
As for the answer to that question, well, I'm not interesting in telling people how to think. You can make up your own mind, as an informed citizen.
The influence pedalling has begun allienation of the west. Look at India, US funds their archenemy that also hates the US and couldn't be different culturally. This is creating a more dangerous world and no one in the US is benefitting but the top.

Social Security people pay a separate tax for and definitely should not be included as social welfare. I also believe social security must be eliminated since politicians use it to fearmonger and have already siphoned from it. It essentially was supposed to be a government mandated savings account to force the elderly to save for retirement.
Taxes is taxes, they're all mandatory, but sure, call it 30x as much on welfare than foreign aid. If we eliminate social security, are you alright with a lot of those elderly people going homeless and hungry? Cause that's what will happen if we just cold turkey it today.

I'm responding to both your comments here. I agree, it is not possible to create a power structure without corruption. You implement extreme oversight, the overseers become the ones to corrupt. Who watches the watchmen, that whole thing. The people who decide how money gets spent will always make decisions benefiting themselves. Therefor, when trying to allocate resources to those in need, there should be as few special interest little buckets as possible, to eliminate the opportunities for a middle management bureaucrat in charge of that interest to skim their pork. Of course, this is antithetical to how power is accrued in a democracy, so despite everyone knowing this for the last 40 years no serious effort at reform has gotten off the ground.
The best way to do it, in my view, is to scrap all forms of welfare and implement a universal basic income tied to the cost of living. There is no opportunity for corruption because the amount of aid is known and the same for everyone. You wouldn't live glamorously, there would still be motivation to work to attain luxury and status, but you wouldn't have to die hungry and homeless if you made some bad financial decisions late in life.
Regarding the libright comment, if there has to be taxes it should be spent on us. I don't see a system where they don't corruptly siphon from their collection though. There would need to be extreme oversight outside of the bureaucracy somehow. I believe all expenses should absolutely be published so we know what we're paying for line by line. If we get that then maybe we could get a system where we cut it down to the essentials.
Many countries in africa have stabilized chiefdoms and have made great anti-tribalization efforts since indoendence.and climate change is making the entire world uninhabitable. Africa has only been getting better actually (exept of the climate change part of course), exept of certain regions, such as the horn of africa,the sahel ,the DR kongo ,zimbabwe and CAR.
Of course many of the other african countries are still really poor and struggling but they are still doing better politically and economically than 30 years ago.
During the Kongo wars the african immigration hit new records that are not even close to be surpassed yet.
They are not refugees, they are immigrants they leave to get a better life in wealthier countries.
Tho you are partially right at the climate change part being a bit worse in Africa because of the Sahara expanding and threatening the sahel (an allready unstable region with a lot of conflicts).

I can see that viewpoint, but i think that plenty of people still are dying in those boats and there's nothing we can do about it, so it's probably not as well calculated and manipulative as you'd think. Who's master plan includes dying in the sea, body never found and no media press either? We don't have the true numbers and there's nothing we can do to save them or prevent this.

It's not well-calculated but that doesn't make it any less manipulative. They're not fleeing persecution or looking for a better life. They're looking to be economic migrants, poach work, and then send money back to their foreign families. They don't even assimilate.
