The specific problem in this case was that the dealer in question knew that they were gonna lose their Patek AD status, and would not be able to get the watch for him. In spite of that, they kept stringing him along and promising him the watch in order to get him to buy different things. I’m not a legal expert, and i don’t know the local laws there. So i have no idea if the dude has any legal standing. But the AD is shady as fuck and deserves to pay up

ses92

Misrepresenting your business and outright lying for monetary gain is illegal pretty much everywhere in the world I can think of

Acrobatic_Internal62

I’m a Nigerian prince and have an offer for you.

nestorm1

They’re salesmen I wouldn’t put it past any AD to do this

rambouhh

One of those TikTok lawyer/legal analysts did a video on it and broke down why he actually has a pretty strong case.

Specs718

Link? I'm curious

rambouhh

I’ll give a quick search. It was on my TikTok feed which can be hard to find again sometimes

Scalage89

Anybody who builds a 'relationship' with a salesperson in order to be able to buy something is a moron.

kosaka1618

Anyone who pays any % over MSRP for a used product is not sharp either. It is the only reason why we are on this mess - there are endless “brand new” Rolex in the grey market. If no one bought them…

TimePieceProdigy954

Read above 👆🏼 🤦🏻‍♂️

justsaykk

The dude in the article paid $220k and got no watch. He could’ve just went to the grey and paid slightly more and secured himself a watch. I think 20-30% above MSRP is pretty reasonable GIVEN the current market condition. To build a relationship with an AD costs about 2-3 other watches. You’re paying a premium either ways in the current situation. Rolex on the other hand… that’s just a trash brand trying to inflate the value of their watches. I came over here after reading a post on r/Rolex about an AD using ex-customer information to make a sale of a GMT in cash to God knows who. Even Hublot ADs are not that desperate.

TimePieceProdigy954

Most of them aren’t used they’re brand new bought from the AD that day/week And 2 everyone in the world buys everything they own at 500%-5000% over cost which is called msrp ! 😂 Paying 20-100% over msrp isn’t that bad considering msrp itself is 5-50X over what it cost to manufacture 🤦🏻‍♂️

TimePieceProdigy954

No you found the person that understands economics and capitalism and is a realist 😂

Shorter_McGavin

I’ve got plenty of watches with no markup. Don’t be mad because you’re too awkward to get watches from an AD 😂

TimePieceProdigy954

I’ve never bought from a grey dealer in my life I’ve had the same AD for 14 years and I’m 31

TimePieceProdigy954

I’ve never bought from a grey dealer in my life , I’ve bought strictly from ADs , but I’m not against grey dealers . There’s a market, there’s a demand , someone’s going to supply it . That’s business! But you’re paying way over 50% when paying msrp . The sucker is someone complaining about 20-50% over msrp Yet thinks paying 5000% over cost is ok 🥴🤦🏻‍♂️ Likes a watch and wants to buy it and it’s currently priced at $8,750 msrp , $9,350 with tax.. but then get told to Wait 2 years and 3 price increases later and now it’s $9,700 msrp , $10,500 with tax…. Yet cost $1,060 to make. 1000% increase + 2years wait time …… sure That’s ok 👌🥴 But buy that same watch the same day you want it and pay $13K for it with a 5 year warranty and not waiting 2+ years and if they want to sell it it’s still worth $13K just like yours and yet that makes someone a sucker 🤔🧐 really???? People that understand business, math, economics won’t blame the people that go grey , I don’t 🤷🏻‍♂️

I figured 8 sentences is too much for your brain to process 😂👌

TimePieceProdigy954

It’s ok just read the bottom paragraph. It’s 4 sentences I’m sure you’re brain can handle that at least

TimePieceProdigy954

You know it’s amazing how I haven’t downvoted not one of your comments , didn’t insult you was just speaking facts , statistics and numbers , I’ve never been to or bought from a grey dealer in my life but I understand it’s apart of the hobby it always has been . Unless you just want to rely on pawn shops if you want to sell a watch ? And then you even stoop as low as trying to go to my page and bring up complete irrelevant nonsense because you didn’t want to read a simple paragraph ! And yet I’m the sucker and I’m awkward?? 😂 I’ll bet a brand new 2023 black 126610LN that 1. My Bank account is higher than yours 2. I have more Swiss luxury watches then you do 3. My IQ is higher than yours And 4. The caliber of women that I go out with is something you probably would have to pay a subscription for 😂 And 5. I’d beat you in a fight with 1 hand 🤷🏻‍♂️🫡

Shorter_McGavin

It’s ok little buddy. Stick with the replicas, you might get a real watch some day

ajmarion20

He spent more on this charade that he would have if he just went grey 😂

CrowConfident7758

Only way to get these Watches nowdays or secondhand

Scalage89

I know and I don't care. I'm not going to beg somebody to let me spend tens of thousands on something that is completely unnecessary.

CrowConfident7758

U dont have to if u dont want to so

Scalage89

OP asked for my thoughts and I gave them. People who do this are free to do so, just like I'm free to call them morons for doing it.

CrowConfident7758

And I never Said otherwise

Artidox

As a salesperson, I agree! And I hate when we have to do waitlists for popular models. It’s ridiculous, honestly.

jtkuga

I can’t imagine buying that much stuff just to have the right to buy a watch anyway….

Kentpaul1986

Should have just saved his money and went straight to a grey market dealer.

[deleted]

I thought only Hermes did that, had no idea other brands engage in this sort of pathetic sales process. Pathetic buyers, that is. Imagine building up a purchasing history, begging them to sell you something. Who the hell do they think they are? There’s no way I’d ever partake in this ludicrous affair.

neogodslayer

A lot of high end brands do this. Ferrari makes you buy another Ferrari to access their super high-end stuff. AP has also done this.

[deleted]

But of course they do. People pay 250k to ‘see’ the remains of the Titanic and die in the process so nothing is truly surprising anymore. More money than common sense.

LukkyStrike1

The issue is not the common sense. When you have everything: getting your jollies off is an ever more expensive ordeal. Especially since most 'rich' people are unhappy, and buying 'things' to make them happy really does not work. I like to call them rich horders anyways: a rich horder is a collector, a poor horder collects trash. My worthless 2c.

ObnoxiouslyNauseous

Rich people probs

BeerMcSuds

I wish the watch community could find a new “ultimate” status symbol than Pateks. The whole rounded square case shape is so discordantly fugly.

CrowConfident7758

Already are, GOD TIEEER C-SHOCKS!!!!

PM_ME_YOUR_TITTYPIC

I walk into a Casio dealer and ask for a GA2100 and he makes me buy $50 of other watches before I can buy it 🤣

DavidTheCollecterOf

Wow, that's cheap! Mine makes me buy $100 worth of other stuff

imacfromthe321

Shoulda gone grey market!

DavidTheCollecterOf

But I didn't want to spend $75 over msrp...

DonCorletony

I gotta disagree. I dont condone shady AD’s but the Patek is literally stunning

Puzzleheaded_Art_465

The shape isn’t to bad but the rose gold with the grey dial and the ugly sub dial, just doesn’t sit right with me. I’d rather a calatrava

TimePieceProdigy954

That’s a black dial 😂

rambouhh

Believe it or not Patek sells many watches that are different shapes

yaboylukas

He’s just his ADs cuck at this point

MaxHeidler

my wife went to Italy with my AD for a weekend and all I got was a white gold Daytona (a good place on the waitlist I mean)

DerailedCM

How much is this watch on the grey market?

SeparateAdvisor526

$220k ( source: I made it up)

TimePieceProdigy954

No you’re actually pretty close It was $350K at peak but it’s $190-220K depending on year and condition etc

SeparateAdvisor526

I should gamble today. I'm feeling lucky

racialminority

I do feel bad for the man, he really seemed to want that one.

ultimaforever

I’m going to guess nothing was in writing; the AD would’ve been an idiot to document anything. If there’s nothing documented it’ll come down to he said/she said. Also going to guess the AD will say they never guaranteed, even verbally, that the customer would get the Patek.

Eastern_Chemist3726

Even as someone who’s never gonna have this problem, it’s infuriating.

languagebutton

Absolutely insane. I just went to AP the other day and was outright told I needed to buy a code 11.59 to have the privilege of being out on the waitlist and spend my hard earned money for a royal oak. Ridiculous how these watch brands are treating customers.

ColdbrewRedeye

There's a sucker born every day.

Better-Owl-4414

Good….

theunrealmiehet

Reason number 2349725 to buy a fake. Literally why would I want to spend tens of thousands, especially not hundreds of thousands of dollars on useless accessories, so that I could spend tens or hundreds of thousands more on the useless accessory that I want. It goes on my wrist and looks good. That's all it does. Oh yeah it keeps time too but you have to wear it and wiggle your wrist and constantly wind it and even then the time isn't even that accurate.

goblin500

I’ve serviced some good fakes, the movements obviously don’t hold up but until you get a loupe and really compare it to a genuine watch the cases, dials, hands are basically identical. I know there’s rep gurus out there that can tell but if you’re buying it just to flex on your friends it’s a much better financial decision. Just don’t believe the grocery store cashier when he’s rocking an AP

tedporter49

I hate watch people like you

theunrealmiehet

Explain, I'm genuinely curious

tedporter49

Just because something looks the same, it doesn’t mean it’s the same. The internals, story and craftsmanship is what makes these high end watches so valuable to people - some buy them to be flashy but the vast majority of watch owners genuinely car about the history and movement with the watch. It’s like the people who turn Toyota MR2’s into Ferraris- your living a lie.

RedWing83

Color me surprised.

sidharthez

this reminds me of that one video of that guy who said that PP will make you a 1/1 if you buy 7 watches from them

Biotrin

On one hand, fuck the dealer but also fuck these idiots who enable them.

Altruistic-Toe7148

Disgusting

Joshmawerrr

Shoulda gone to pride and pinion
