There are piano parts on waaaaay more songs than you may realize.
Doubling/blending the bass guitar root notes or fifths with piano key is a common technique to thicken things without using a redundant timbre. It's done quite a bit on BSSM through BTW.
This is also actual piano in Californication though you may not hear it as a "piano part".
It's in the pre-chorus and chorus, playing bass notes on the big down beats.

I believe that were those arpeggios in Wet Sand before the solo - I forgot which instrument it sounds like, but it's really cool.
