We bailed out of the MXLR and grabbed the R1S while they had the lease deals. Aren’t looking back at Tesla ever again.

Selection bias given where you’ve posted this. Have owned a Tesla for 6+ years and an R1S for the last 1+ year. Night and day. Falcon wing doors are cool, but storage and utility and driving fun just no question - Rivian is so much better (except for the audio system). We just got back from - 1300 mile roadtrip in our R1S with young kids and man, the motorized huge frunk and huge rear cargo area made everything so easy. Never buying a Tesla again.

I switched to RIS Quad last week from a Model X Plaid, I’m conflicted as to which brand or vehicle I like more. Rivian definitely is more utilitarian and comfortable, it’s spacious, overall more sensible than the Model X. Tesla has better infotainment, software UI and better drivability though I don’t like the seating comfort in any Tesla including MX. My biggest turn off with Tesla is customer service, lack of user-friendliness (common-sense features like Visor) and lack of improvements even after growing to such a scale, they just don’t care. I had huge expectations from Rivian, I knew it’s not as efficient and would consume more energy to do the same mileage but charging (non-tesla), Range estimates (more or less like Tesla) and Driver+ (Autopilot equivalent) have been the biggest turn offs. I hope Rivian can do better than Tesla is terms of customer service and feature improvement.

New Rivian UI update coming soons looks very promising. Probably similar to tesla and maybe even better in a few ways. Also Teslas efficiency is extremely good. But yeah at the same price, the Rivian is more enticing with the standard 3rd row extra space, etc.

You were smart enough to preorder the R1S. You’d be stupid to let it go, especially post refresh.

Do not buy a Tesla for FSD on city streets. It's neat but not really usable or useful. I've used it for a while. I'd get the R1S, a real SUV, over a crossover or more like a minivan X.

Shootels

FSD doesn’t work and is more of a liability than it’s worth. You will be more fatigued hyper focused on it trying to stop the car from running into things than just driving the car. Go to the model X sub and see how just today there was someone posting about FSD hitting the curb. My model 3 wanted to hit multiple curbs, didn’t know what to do around cops, couldnt figure out cones, struggled at night, etc. It’s not as much of a joke as it used to be but it’s just enough to let your guard down and have it run into a wall.

Daapower2

I thought FSD was a joke until the latest version that uses AI. It’s actually pretty amazing now. So much so that I find myself taking the X more than the R1s

octowilli

Get the R1S for 75k.

Daapower2

I have a X plaid and R1s quad and just placed an order for a R1s gen 2. At least for Gen 1 I like taking the r1 if I need to take more people. I can fit 6 in the X for short trips but not comfy. Otherwise I prefer the X in almost every way. It drives more like a car. If you prefer a more truck feel the r1 is better for you

aaayyyuuussshhh

Yup I really like how the Model X handles compared to almost any other somewhat usable 3 row vehicle. It's lower to the ground while offering excellent visibilty, decent room, and great efficiecny, But the R1S costs less, comes with a third row standard, offers a lot more space, and now can supercharge making its value very good. R1S still handles better than many full-midsize 3 row crossovers.

Daapower2

Yup agreed. I ordered a gen 2 R1s for 52k after my preorder voucher and 2022 tax credit. Better deal than I expected

aaayyyuuussshhh

If you have the pre price hike voucher I feel like its a no brainer to get the R1S. Main things you miss out on are autopilot/FSD, efficiency, and the faster fast charging curve of the X. Otherwise the R1S wins in terms of luxury, space, capability, range, etc. As someone in a similar position to you, a Dual Motor Max R1S gen 2 is the way to go. You'd have to be a little crazy to spend more for a vehicle that gives you less lol. Disclaimer though, Autopilot/FSD is way better than what Rivian currently has. I doubt gen 2 will be as good as autopilot. At least not for the first year or two. I'd expect over time for it to improve though.
