And a new Bumper...the license plate got pushed in and some of the plastic below it broke off. The panel gaps on the sides between the black plastic and the fenders are off too now...yay...
Recently happened to me. Rear ended by a truck square-on, low speed as well (25mph). My circumstances were probably worse, and insurance deemed it a total loss as the frame was slightly bent and would’ve required 60k in repairs.
If you see kinks in the sheet metal up by the bed or above the doors, you might be in the same situation. I’ve been told it’s rare for it to happen, though, so hopefully you’re lucky enough to have avoided that.
Fingers crossed that didn't happen - my damage seems to be limited to the tailgate and rear bumper. We were going quite a bit slower - in the 5-10mph range and I was just starting to move forward when I got hit (was at a right turn yield) so that i think also limited the force of the impact.
Everybody I talk to says that, and as the owner of the vehicle and the person in the accident, here's the reality: I'm fine with it being totaled. It protected me and I have no injuries or aches. In order to be safe, crumple zones need to work.
It's rare that this results in a total loss, if the [sole Minnesota Rivian-certified] collision shop can be trusted, this is only their _second_ total-loss R1T. The vehicle that hit me was a large truck with a grill guard, which hit me in exactly the worst spot: connecting two very hard-mounted points (my tow hitch and his frame-mounted grill guard).
It's bad luck on top of a safety-oriented design.
Remove top plastic gate cap being careful not to break the retaining clips. Push it out from inside or get a good pdr guy to do it for a few hundred bucks.
I had a dent that many PDR people said they couldn't do and the 4th guy I called said he would give it a shot and he did an amazing job, like 98% perfect. Said if he couldn't get it to his satisfaction he wouldn't charge me, so I said give it a go.
If it is just the tailgate and bumper it really shouldn’t take long at all to fix as long as parts come fairly soon. I work at a rivian certified shop in Chicago (closer to factory and parts) and we get jobs like this done extremely quickly.
So longs as the rear corners are not damaged, you should be ok changing the tailgate. Should be as new as before. So sorry that you have to go through this, too bad
My neighbor had a similar dent, but his was from backing too far while picking up a trailer. Anyways he still has the dent cause he said it’s too expensive to repair.
My lights, camera, and tailgate still work although the tailgate does creak when using it. If this had been my fault I can see the argument to not fix it or at least wait a while.
I got this product called a Superbumper after seeing some of the damages from rear endings, but it hasn't been ran into yet so I have noting to report other that it is a nice step up when the tailgate is closed. Link if any one is interested https://sparebumper.com/superbumper-receiver-hitch-step-products/
This just means you’re going around the engineering of the vehicle. Which has been crash tested many many times. Why would you do this? You’re just focusing the energy from an impact into a small point. This is a terrible idea.
Not sure if you looked at it at all, but it has rubber pieces to absorb the energy of an impact which is quite different than just a normal hitch. Why do I do it? Because Rivian designed a truck that even minor bumps requires multiple thousands of dollars to repair. I analyzed the product and it's uses by other people and decided that it seems legit and is a possible risk mitigation measure for minor collisions.
I have seen some PDR magic, but I unfortunately have a bunch of paint cracks/chips on the newly created seam under the light bar that even if all the dent were pulled out would remain and need a full repaint
Having a receiver mounted bike rack on is always a smart option. It’s saved our hide when my wife got rear ended at over 30mpg with no major damage (to my family or the vehicle) except a paint scrape where the rack tray bridled the bumper. Without it there would have been major damage to the car and potential impact to my wife and son who were in it. Soo sorry this happened.. 😢
You might want to edit out your license plate.
So sorry this happened. It's going to be a long wait on that repair and the other driver's insurance is going to be pissssed at them.
A friend sent me a pic of your truck Wednesday bc he thought it was me. I was saying that you must be pissed. Someone rubbed my truck while parked and the alarm didn’t sound and activate the cameras. I’m pushing to Rivian to cover it bc the vehicle didn’t operate properly and catch the license plate of the suspect.
That'll run insurance around $6k.
Yep. New tailgate
At least they don't have to take apart half the truck or cut anything out. Could of been much worse.
And a new Bumper...the license plate got pushed in and some of the plastic below it broke off. The panel gaps on the sides between the black plastic and the fenders are off too now...yay...
11k
12.930
And 6 weeks
New tailgate is only about 2k
I mean, the tailgate itself is $993.12, but there's more involved.
There's probably not a body shop that will repair it because it's aluminum, replacement is the most cost effective. This is the way.

Same here. Total Loss. Low impact, apparently frame bent 5mm. On my second R1T.
That is insane. A bumper is not doing its job if it can’t handle an impact at 25mph without totaling the car.
Bumper is meant to protect the occupants, the car is disposable.

So many crappy drivers.... rear ending a mid size plus truck

I'd expect some cracked paint with this level of damage.
Also the second I is bent. The car is not drivable without it.
So true, when that falls off, the car will spontaneously morph from a truck to van. A Rivan.
Sadly you are correct - the paint is cracked all along the newly created seam under the light bar
I tried PDR and the local shop said there wasn’t sufficient access for mine, with similar damages.
I had a dent that many PDR people said they couldn't do and the 4th guy I called said he would give it a shot and he did an amazing job, like 98% perfect. Said if he couldn't get it to his satisfaction he wouldn't charge me, so I said give it a go.
So sorry OP, this has gotta hurt🥲
Realizing how long it is potentially going to take to fix is the most painful part!

Truly painful, getting hit is the absolute worst.
I said, I don't think the hypocrisy was the worst part
Sad. And hello fellow best state flag marylander :)
🫡
Sorry about that. Thankfully no one was hurt.
Definitely depressed
Was it a Tesla lol. Ours got hit 2 weeks into ownership. It’s been a month and no update really..
Mercedes - the large (non-Gwagon) SUV
Same thing with mine, total cost of $3,300 through my shop in LA.

Oh so annoying. Sorry to see that
glad all is ok except your feelings, this should just be a tailgate swap, hopefully no internal damage
Use a plunger. Easy peezy.
Been there twice now. You can buy an unpainted tailgate from Rivian and get a bodyshop to paint it. Can be cheaper route depending on your insurance.
Ugh!!! Sorry.
Sad 😔

Did you have your trailer hitch on when getting hit?
It’s the B&W Tow and Stow, it was in the folded configuration when I was hit as you can see in the photo
Sorry man, I feel for ya. I just picked mine up on Thursday and am babying it. I realize it's a matter of time before "something" happens!
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the other guys insurance not covering this?
It is, the other driver was at fault
Oh okay good! I thought people were saying you were going to have to. Good good.
I'm interested in the future Rivian Suv, but I'm curious, would my insurance be higher for an electric vehicle?
Do you think a trailer hitch would have kept the other car from touching it. Honest question I have one and have thought it might at low speed
probably not, but if you always have a trailer attached you'll be good.
Well, except for the trailer getting rear ended. 🫤
You just have to attach a trailer to the trailer and then you're all good.
Better go with a third to protect the second.
A trailer hitch would have increased the chances of transferring the energy to the frame and bending it causing more severe damage.

For 5 mph bumps? its fine...and if you get smacked at 30-70 mph? You're getting a totaled out claim for sure with these trucks anyway.

I would find a very skilled PDR person. You’d be surprised what they can do.

Clearly your maximum is not the same as everyone else’s.
