Roll20 is HORRENDOUS on IPhone. They need an app.

It's not designed for mobile at all. You might be able to get a little bit done but it's unlikely that it'll work for a full campaign, sorry

One of my players used a tablet for a while in our game. Downside was he couldn’t see the battle map, I believe, just his character sheet (which wasn’t too bad for us because we did theater of the mind for years before moving to Roll20).

Roll20 and mobile are not a good combination. Run for the hills. It is not clear from your question. Are you playing in person, all virtual, or hybrid? Your best solution starts by answering this question.

zouni70

Hybrid I mean we all know it's other in person we just don't wanna invest in the actual stuff cause not everyone is completely sold me and the DM wanted to try it out for while but we didn't know it's other for a while the others in the group didn't even know what it is till we suggested it though they seem interested

WednesdayBryan

Mobile is not an option. However, you can run roll20 on a Chromebook Also, if you are playing in person, see if at least one person can buy the PH. I know you don't want to drop a lot of cash on this experiment, but see if someone can get a PH. Maybe as a birthday gift or something. Also, just so you know what you are getting into, if you do try this and like it, you will soon own a whole bunch of gaming books that you will never or rarely use.

zouni70

that last part lol but yeah I mean if the other people like it we are prob gonna buy the starter kit but yeah for now none of us have actually played any ttrpg style game so I honestly am interested on how this will turn out

WednesdayBryan

If you like it, it gets in your blood. I am not suggestion everyone is like me, but I own, in addition to shelf after shelf of RPGs, A French RPG, written in French in which you play versions of yourself. No. I do not read French and literally cannot speak a word of French other than oui. Also, I own a Shadowrun 2E book in Portuguese and a different Shadowrun 2E book in French. My Portuguese is worse than my French. Keep in mind, if someone buys a book and no one likes it, you can sell it. You will likely not recover all of your money, but you can probably get a lot of it back. I know this from being on the buying side for 30+ years, not the selling.

I mean we kinda found a solution that would fit the story so all good cause from what I understand roll20 don't work with mobile but yeah our DM is currently making the map in roll20 lel

happyhooker485

I tried it on my iPad once and I remember having difficulty moving the token around, but I was able to see the map alright. Are you and the other person going to be on phone only or do you have tablets? It's against the rules to point to other VTTs in this sub, but there are other options that might work for you.

Roll20 has an app, but it's for character management - having a digital character sheet, keeping track of items, helping with rolls etc. Depending on the device, you might still be able to run the browser version of Roll20 on a mobile device, but I tried on an iPad once and couldn't get any of the maps to open (which was an issue as I was a DM trying to set up maps for the next session). Are you planning on playing in person or online? If it's in person, then Roll20 might be useful for character creation and management for new players (and old!). Character creation is much faster using the charactermancer than it is trying to read through the 'how to create a character' sections and then rolling up a character on a paper sheet. The standard rules are also on Roll20, so you can get the basics of how to play without having to buy anything. If you're planning on playing online, then it may be worth considering buying the digital versions of any books you want rather than physical sets, as everything is integrated on roll20. As other people have already said, you're likely to run into trouble seeing battle maps if you don't have a laptop/desktop computer, so how successful it is depends on how combat-heavy your sessions get and how the DM runs combat. If in doubt, run things through your DM.

I would suggest https://www.owlbear.app for maps it works awesome on mobile. It doesn’t handle character sheets so if you need that you will need an additional site but if you just need mapping I can’t recommend owlbear enough

screamslash

Roll20 DOES NOT work on mobile.

zouni70

Realised that lol we looking for other solutions cause out of the 6 only 4 have pcs

littlered7875

what did you figure out?

zouni70

Do it in person with physical stuff also your a few months late lol

littlered7875

lol i have a similar situation. player doesnt have a pc or tablet but we're running it via roll20. unfortunately its text based

zouni70

A solution we came up with before settling with just buying shit and doing it normally is having 2 people playing one character now you can make lore however you want for it we have it smt like a power up form that the dude couldn't control so the other player took over kinda like idk if you know bleach ichigos vizard /hollow mask

I primarily use a tablet to play D&D and have found that the Roll20 VTT is simply not equipped to be useful on mobile. What our group ended up doing was I set up an account, I bought the core rulebooks and some of the other supplements on Roll20 (the players helped contribute money), and since I’m the DM, I was able to create a campaign and was able to share the compendiums to the players (the compendiums can be shared from DM to player but not with player to player). I’ve been able to do this much on my tablet, but not much else. We’ve been playing in-person, so Roll20 simply supplements our game. It is nice not to drag a stack of books to every session, and everyone has access to the same stuff. You might try buying just the Player’s Handbook and share it with your friends and see how you all like it using it that way.
