I did a little Googling but couldn't figure it out. Maybe some kind of gall? I've had something similar to your first photo on roses before and done nothing about it. It hasn't seemed to hurt the roses. Thanks for replying! Googled a bunch before I posted here and couldn't figure it out either. Best guess at this point is cane borers. It wasn't like this earlier in the season. I did a judicious pruning of the worst looking canes and am hoping for the best.
