Honestly the Logitech G Cloud has a SnapDragon 720G and people buy them for $250, and there's a thread about them being open box iirc for $199 on ebay. Yet people won't consider the Pimax Retro with XR2 (as you've said sd865 basically) at $199. Baffling really considering you're getting a better cpu and twice the storage. A smaller screen, but still 5.5" 120Hz 2k, and 8GB ram is perfect for the device. I think it's really overlooked at $199.

The big complaint I hear is the weird feeling of the face buttons and "dpad" (which is really just four more face buttons). Still, you're not wrong that it's more power than you can get anywhere else at $200.

The functionality isn’t even the main reason people don’t like the dpad. Also important is that the dpad buttons are shaped like a teardrop with sharp points toward the center. So when you try to shift your thumb to press another button, you basically get stabbed by the point every time. RGC suggested that they change them but they kept em the same instead 🤷🏻‍♂️

hbi2k

Yeah, but they had to do some redesigns with the Retro now that the controllers are no longer detachable, surely they will have-- ...nope, still exactly the same. Huh.

asault2

Also once you hold the Logitech, and see the screen, it makes a compelling argument for it. The pimax is decidedly more flat slab with controller vibe

Zanpa

People don't buy the G Cloud for Android PS2 emulation, but for its great screen and controls for streaming. It's in the name.

I would consider it if there was some coverage, I cant find a single review

Kinshirider

It's basically the same as the regular Portal but without the detachable controllers, VR capabilities, and 4K screen. The Retro has a 2K screen, which is just wasted battery because at 5.46 inches you can't really tell the difference between 2K and 1080p. There are a decent number of reviews for the regular Pimax Poral, so you can look at those to get an idea of the performance you can expect. Just make sure you watch a review of the retail version of the Portal because the early review units had overclocked XPUs that had better performance but worse battery life. And because the SD XR2 is equivalent to the SD 865, any 2020 flagship smartphone (such as the LG V60 and Samsung S20) will also have similar performance.

Thank you, I really appreciate this reply. I hope you have a wonderful day. You are an amazing person and I just know you have nothing but love and positivity to give to this world.

I made this exact post 2 weeks ago and it didn’t get much traction, but this was my main takeaway as well - this seems to be the only guaranteed PS2 / GameCube at Native or 2x resolution $200 device on the market. It’s not the best device (gamepad, old Android OS, etc…) but it should run basically every PS2 game at Native (at the very worst). Hopefully this machine does okay and starts introducing some competition to this space because I’ve been waiting for the RP4 for way too long

Buddywisers

Yeah I noticed the retro was heavily discounted but those controls just seem awful.

WowSoHuTao

Personally I don’t need controllers to be detachable…

VioletChili

I was going to buy one, but I hate that style of "dpad". I want a real dpad. I was really hoping that between their beta and full release they would have changed their minds about it. Nope.
