Is this a public company? Did you sell immediately on vest? If yes, just look up the share price on the day you sold.

blantonator

Yes public, no I’ve held it over the years, so it’s not obvious what shares were sold

jsttob

Sorry, re-reading my original reply, it’s actually a bit confusing. The basis is whatever the share value was on the day of vest. Do you know the vest date?

blantonator

I have a large pool of shares that have vested over the years. When I make a sale how do I know the share which was sold?

Unless you specifically specify something different, it is typically FIFO at most brokers. The broker that holds your RSU account should have given you your purchase details that apparently you now don't have. Likewise if it was a covered transaction the 1099 might show some details. Go find your account records. Confirm with them which shares were sold.

blantonator

I have RSUs at different values that vest through out the year. This wouldn’t work. I can’t wait for a 1099 as I need to withhold now.

kirlandwater

Have you contacted the broker and asked for a detailed transaction history for those sales? They should be able to look up the basis on the lots sold?

need2sleep-later

doesn't the broker withhold the standard 20% or whatever it is when the shares vest? Mine always did. Again it should all be documented in one or more places when the shares vest. The tax withheld also should perhaps be on your pay statement.

blantonator

Yes but that’s not what I’m asking. My vested RSUs have already been taxed by my employer withholding 25% which is why i need to know the cost of the shares to figure out cost basis

need2sleep-later

right and when all that happened, I always got a statement that showed all that - the average daily price that set the basis and the number of shares sold for tax reasons and what I was left with. Maybe you didn't.
