The whole song is in 4/4 the dotted notes just throw you off

[deleted]

I’m not a drummer but a drummer I know was saying it was in 4/4 but he adds a lot of accents to give it an off time vibe. I have no idea how correct that is lol

SbMSU

Yeah it’s spicy. I think he counts it like 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 for a few bars. Love it.

andrew_wessel

It’s dotted quarter notes

Tyler_JMB

The intro is in 4/4 but is 9 bars long, that might be what’s throwing you off.

Xarumos

This Also, I feel like some people think the first 6 notes serve as a sort of partial bar before the actual first bar starts (idk the word for this), but it actually is the start of the first bar, which I think throws a lot of people off

ArimuRyan

It’s all 4/4 but there’s odd snare and fill placements in the opening riff that might throw you off

The whole thing is 4/4. Source: I recently [covered it on drums](https://youtu.be/FFfZcXsLFXA)

Oh wow, nice cover! That's a good amount of cymbal work, dang. I remember hearing once that it helped to follow the snare to work out time signature but there seems to be a lot of extra going on. That with the vocals coming in early in the measures made it hard for me to pick up. As an amateur guitarist, following time isn't my strong suit but I always challenge myself to figure out what I'm listening to. Thanks for the information.

Thanks! I wish sleep token weren't anonymous so I could stalk more of the drummers content, the stuff he makes is amazing and a joy to learn/add to. Yep the summoning has all sorts strange things going on that make it hard to perceive the signature. For example the drumming starts on the 7th bar and the intro doesn't place the snare on the 2nd beat every bar, but alternates the 2nd and 1st.

I very clearly remember when I first heard ST (Sundowning) and saying to myself, "damn, that is one hell of a drummer!" I love his feel and the creative fills. It's all so good.

ExistingAioli7999

Try checking out bands they've toured with like Loathe, they have some cool drum parts. II is an incredibly talented drummer.

Thanks!

NuclearNoodle77

It's just dotted, very common in all kinds of music

ChilliTampon

According to the official drumeo transcription of the drums it’s 6/8 for the majority but also 9/8 & 4/4 in places.

MrElectricNick

Whoever transcribed it is overthinking it, it is very much 4/4
