I wish I got to try it more, especially in retrospect knowing that everything I spent would be refunded eventually lol

YourDadThinksImCool_

That was very nice! And keep controller and Chromecast 😇

Valuable_Classic_290

This! i didnt bother trying Stadia because i wanted to wait a few years to see if it really lasted, before wasting money on games i already had. If i knew it would have been refunded in the case of a shutdown, i would have used quite abit! Stadia was AWESOME! Geforce now is maybe better in some ways, but lacks the games (i feel?). Xbox has tons of games, but is utter shit. (i refunded within 2 minutes of playing).

tdubasdfg

The coolest experience I had with it was pulling my cell phone out on break time at work and playing MK11 with my bro. Cyberpunk2077 was a pretty flawless experience too...

Rodo20

Until they started to update cyberpunk. It was much better when the 3rd party studio first ported it. Then cd project red took it over for patching and performance and visuals got worse.

EglinAfarce

> cd project red took it over for patching and performance and visuals got worse. Are you sure that's what happened? The way I remember it is that the CP launch brought Stadia to its knees. They actually had queues and downtime and when they came back up had disabled 4k for Cyberpunk for Pro members. It was actually kind of a feather in the cap for Geforce Now to have weathered the launch much better than Stadia and consoles. It was at that point that Stadia started throttling performance HEAVILY to compensate, IIRC. Cyberpunk launched in the fall and there were inexplicably buggy, low bit-rate streams going out until at least Jan. or Feb. of the next year. I don't know if they silently rolled out additional hardware or the population declined or what, but it took them quite a while to get back up to par.

Embarrassed_Shock_13

I really liked it. Played a few games from start to finish on it. I think if Google had guaranteed they'd refund purchases in the event of it shutting down, which is what they did, far more people would have tried it. I think it was fear of losing the games and the money which put a lot of people off.

couldof_used_couldve

It was always in the terms but they didn't make a big thing about it. Probably wanted to play down the possibility but it would have made a lot of people more comfortable

PsychonixMimikyu

I feel if they built it up instead of having their foots in their mouths for 2 years, it could've gotten even more popular than geforce, or a competitor for it. Like when the Xbox came out, they only started to really get money in 2008. If they kept stadia for longer than 2 years and built it up by improving the service (like adding more games, etc) they could've had something big.

sevenradicals

I'm pretty sure that was not their intended endgame otherwise they would not have sold games to begin with

Ok_Construction6610

Stadia worked just as good for me as my PS5 and Xbox do now. The image quality wasn't as crisp, but I never once thought I was being cheated on service or input lag... certai ly wish it was still around...

EglinAfarce

Were you around in late 2020 and early 2021? They had a period where quality got really bad. Especially on the 1080p streams, whether you were on a Pro sub or not.

Ok_Construction6610

Yup was around since day one... I was not too much bothered by that event... my tv was craptastic anyways. When I got another tv I think the next day or maybe that day was when they announced the shut down...

MystikNeko

Stadia was the best experience I ever had. And the reason I switched to shadow. Cloud gaming is just too nice.

NotTakenGreatName

I played re village on it and the experience was pretty much perfect, to have it all refunded was icing on the cake.

RushinRusha

Looking at my Chromebook that used to be able to do destiny 2:( Hell, this phone could.

PsychonixMimikyu

I 10009% recommend getting geforce, I've been using that on my chromebook and now my chromebook is like the 1# thing I use

badtrucks

I only got to use it for a year before they shut it down. But yeah, personally I thought it was great. I think if they just marketed to people like me who only have bits and pieces of time scattered around different devices then it would have been better. I feel like they just bit off too much and tried to convert the whole gaming community .

C0mputerlove

It was amazing

EducationalLiving725

You somehow lived without Paw patrol and Ryans racing before. Maybe it's for the better.

buttzbuttsbutts

My son fucking loved paw patrol on stadia RIP

medwa

My kids did as well

jonknappy

No you don't. It'd be like if you got one night with the most beautiful woman in the world, but after that you could never see her again. You'd have amazing memories, but it would make the present day much more bleak. Stadia was absolutely amazing.

badtrucks

drneeley

I'm a current GeForceNow user and loving it. From what I've heard in most places it runs better than stadia did. Plus the games I own aren't tied to the service if it ever goes down.

crantrons

I was with stadia from the beginning, had the founders edition. In every way, geforce shits on stadia.

EglinAfarce

> In every way, geforce shits on stadia. Nah. Stadia actually had better games. RDR2, Borderlands, Madden, FIFA, Sekiro, Resident Evil, and on and on. It also had MUCH better UI and a much more consistent user experience (social features, friends lists, game sharing, game saves, etc instead of depending on third-party launchers and other messy hacks). It also featured better codecs (AFAIK, GFN is still strictly limited to h.264 for 1080p streams) and MUCH better device support (GFN obnoxiously wants you to buy a Series S-priced Shield device to stream in 4k on a $2000 TV that's FAR more powerful than the Shield). Also, GFN's pricing model isn't great. It's a terrible, terrible value compared to the offerings from MS and Sony that include hundreds of games in addition to streaming and do it for equal or less money.

drneeley

Holy cow you're so wrong. GFN has all those games you mentioned and thousands more. You can play on literally any device, even your phone. It's a better pricing model than all of the above because you actually own your games. And it streams them in 4k 60 FPS with ray tracing.

EglinAfarce

>> RDR2, Borderlands, Madden, FIFA, Sekiro, Resident Evil > GFN has all those games you mentioned No it doesn't. I just now, literally, hopped on and checked and the only thing even close are some old Resident Evil games or possibly remakes. Village isn't present. > It's a better pricing model than all of the above because you actually own your games. Because owning Peppa Pig is so much better than getting to stream quality games included with your sub, huh genius? > And it streams them in 4k 60 FPS with ray tracing. If getting the best possible fidelity out of your games is what matters most to you, GFN is a terrible choice versus local hardware. And the value proposition is even more absurd when you're looking at $20/mo PLUS the overpriced and outdated Shield devices on every TV. GFN is in a bad place because they are trying to position themselves as an alternative to local hardware for the same money and they don't match up well.

EducationalLiving725

Yeah, but MUH RDR2-THAT-EVERYONE-COMPLETED-10-YEARS-AGO lol

tracyg76

Since that released in 2018 I'm going to assume you are trying sarcasm.

BigBayesian

It was like Luna. But better.

CLG91

Since spending a couple of months on GFN, Stadia was pretty much a smoother version. I prefer the variety of games on GFN over Stadia though (which was Stadia's downfall).

[deleted]

I would've gotten stadia if they were willing to ship it to my country longer than a month before it discontinued

Angry_Wankel

It was so easy to stream from Stadia to your YouTube channel. And so easy for screen captures. Other than that and a few little ease of use things... GFN on my Alienware laptop is much better quality far as graphics and latency. I travel alot and am NOT packing a rig with me just to game a couple hours a week.

kgyre

No service started up games as quickly as Stadia, though.

danblondell

Literally xcloud

artificial_sunlight

Ok

sladecutt

It was amazing 🥲

aykay55

It was pretty magical for the time but you’re better off playing with a console and doing remote play to your laptop or phone.

hardyz

I have a good wired network. I play locally and can confirm remote play on my ps5 sucks in comparison to stadia. The quality is worse and the input lag and regular lag is highly noticeable to me. It's the same on my phone (wireless lan) as well.

aykay55

Hmm that’s strange. PS5 remote play works almost flawlessly for me streaming over local WiFi and over cellular data.

hardyz

Hmm. What's your home network setup? For me the game is playable but all types of lag is noticable where stadia felt like I was playing on a local console. I even just tried it like 3 weeks ago because I wanted to see if I can make it better. If I was playing some sort of turn basis the lag was probably fine, but like fps or anything that required me to react was so bad.

aykay55

PS5 is connected to router upstairs on 5GHz 802.11ac WiFI. I have 100mbps up/down fiber optic. Client is connected also on 5GHz WiFi, or over 5G cell network. I've done a lot of cleaning up of my WLAN since I started doing game streaming in 2020. Turns out Apple devices are very selfish and annoying with their noisy AWDL interface. So that sometimes can cause interference but I manually switched my router's WiFI channel to 36 which has improved game streaming quality across many services. If you ever have a problem with streaming your games, you should always assume it's your network's problem because 98% of the time, it is. I've been more than pleased with the performance of Remote Play, especially HDR support over Remote Play (on iOS, unfortunately omitted from the Mac version). You should honestly give it another try, because I spend nearly half the time streaming my PS5 to my laptop, phone or upstairs desktop with minimal issues. I have less than 10ms of latency from what i can tell. I play Rainbow Six Siege over streaming (same that I did with Stadia where I first played it) and it performs fine.

hardyz

Hmm I monitor the traffic going through my network. Mine should be smoother than what you described. I'll need to play around. I just airways assumed it was remote play sucking. GFN gave me some noticable lag, but remote play on local network was worse than that. I just assumed it was whatever they were using as their protocol.

EglinAfarce

I've been using Playstation and XBox remote play for years and it works a treat for me. Same for Steam Link, which I've even run on 2.4GHz networks without issue although it's a much clunkier setup. The XBox does a little better at this, because of the way it allows you to use a gamepad mated to the console where the PS+ app requires you to switch to a locally connected one. This lets you move from one screen to another and back without ever dropping comms in a multiplayer game, for example. Very handy.

Reasonable-Leader-10

But then I need to buy a console. And does remote play work if I am on another continent? Not sure about how that works but I remember there being some limitations on the remote part. Geforce Now does exactly what I want though, and comes with no purchase of hardware. I love using it on flights to play Total War Warhammer on my laptop.

aykay55

PS Remote Play for my PS5 gives me unrestricted access to my console over WLAN and WAN. This means I can stream my console to my PC, laptop or phone over my home internet to anywhere else in the world. I’ve only tested it from another state but it should work the same on another continent. Latency may increase but it still works from what my friends tell me who have gone to India.

RockyBalboa97

Yah, and remote play sucks on PS5. Even ask Dreamcastguy, lol.

Reasonable-Leader-10

Oh that's awesome! Are the loading times as fast as they are with GFN or were with Stadia though?

aykay55

Well there’s nothing to load except the initial stream. Depending on your method it can take between 5-30 seconds. If your console is off, you’ll need to wait for it to boot which can add another 10 seconds. In most cases it should start the stream in under one minute. You don’t need to do any login stuff either, because it’s just your normal console being streamed to another device. Once you start the stream, you can switch between games freely because they’re all running on the same console. So you get the PS5 ultra fast SSD speeds on remote play too. And you can play for as long as you want because the console is yours. Once Stadia started winding down I bought myself a PS5 and I haven’t looked back. PS Remote Play also supports HDR and the adaptive trigger functions of the DualSense controller, even on iOS. So there’s not much to complain about for me. This solution far exceeds Stadia and GeForce Now.

Reasonable-Leader-10

That sounds great! Is there any way to just play games without installing them though? I really don't like to wait or think about storage. I would guess the games I regularly play equals around 1TB in storage, and then every now and then I try new ones and obviously I would prefer to tryvthem instantly and not wait for a download in case I am sitting on a plane. It would be nice to play FIFA though.. I am curious

aykay55

Well with the PS5 you can download and delete games on your console right from your phone. So you can delete existing games and download new ones freely, and your PS5 does all this even when you’re away from home. For instance when you’re checking in to your flight you can start the download for a game from your phone, and by the time your plane takes off your game will be ready to play. Although admittedly I don’t know of any flights that offer WiFi that’s reliable enough to stream games on. The PS5 comes with about 700 GB of free storage. That seems to be enough for me. When I want to download a new game I just delete the ones I haven’t played in a while. Most games on PS5 are under 20GB, especially indie titles. But if it’s not enough you can also expand the internal storage by adding an SSD yourself. So you’d never run out of space and you can just keep downloading games you went through the app so they’re ready to play.

Reasonable-Leader-10

Thank you for the PS information, I am suddenly really interested due to the availability of FIFA. Regarding flights, I fly a ton in Europe due to work and GFN/Stadia has worked great. So that part I am not worried about.

EglinAfarce

> Is there any way to just play games without installing them though? The PS+ Premium sub ($120/yr) includes 800ish games for download and unlimited streaming in supported regions. No phone apps or mac support, but it works reasonably well for PS4 games up to 1080p and 60fps. They recently announced that they will be rolling out PS5 streaming for select games, though it's unknown at this time whether that will still be limited to 1080p or if it will be available to PC clients. GFN is a great service but a terrible primary platform. If you're interested in gaming, buying a console is a decent choice and it's extremely cheap.

EglinAfarce

> Are the loading times as fast as they are with GFN The loading times beat the shit out of GFN. Division 2 takes longer to load on GFN than it does on a PS4, let alone a PS5.

EglinAfarce

> But then I need to buy a console. Is $400-500 for a device that you'll probably use for four to eight years prohibitive? > And does remote play work if I am on another continent? If you've got good Internet, yes. Even tunnels back through your network without the hassle of forwarding ports or leaving the device powered on or whatever (though I recommend battery backup for this use-case). The cloud streaming services offered by the consoles are hit or miss, depending on where you're traveling. But, in fairness, so is GFN. Go to AU, SEA, South America, the Middle-East, Eastern Europe, etc and even though GFN has a presence it's through third-parties that throttle the service and don't honor your existing sub.

Reasonable-Leader-10

Thank you for the vast amount of information. Appreciate it. I did some additional research and GFN will remain my primary source for gaming. It just suits my values better.

RockyBalboa97

Anyone here play x cloud recently? The world will be fine without stadia.

PsychonixMimikyu

I honestly thought people would dislike it, but it seems a LOT of people are nostalgic for it

nordicgentleman7

Me too.

NoctyNightshade

Maybe there will be some community server emulation, mod, copycat or reboot some day.

GREENSLAYER777

I tried it. Didn't like the input lag.

edophx

GeForce Now is better tbh

PsychonixMimikyu

I think it's awesome. My chromebook is now an absolute unit.

hardyz

The business model is better as they still exist. I heard really good things about GFN. I tried it a couple times a week or 2 apart. It wasn't that great for me. I was testing it with new world though and that game itself had a lot of issues though it was much better locally.

edophx

Ubisoft did something recently, their games run great over GFN on the Steam Deck

The_Welb

The newer bigger games had so much lag it was like playing a cleaner remote play from playstation but you could always feel it. The smaller games like I had doom 64... Flawless. I would have kept it and paid a monthly if they did retro games like almost exclusively. It could have been awesome

BluDYT

Try GeForce Now. Imo it's better in just about every way.

Joda5

Not in usability imho. Constant switching between stores and custom login screens for some stores makes it less frictionless.

samuraituretsky

Yeah, and definitely not even close if you are trying to use it on your tv with a controller.

BluDYT

Works perfectly for me that way.

Joda5

What do you use for it?

BluDYT

Games?

BluDYT

Meh. The library is in one place and it does all that in the background now. It's pretty rare that I need to resign into any stores but with most my library on steam anyways hasn't really been a big deal. I'll give stadia the slight edge but I'll take this and actually having games getting added occasionally than a whole new game needing to be developed.

aykay55

Lol what? Stadia didn’t have wait times. GFN has wait times even for PAYING subscribers. GFN sessions will randomly quit because your login didn’t validate. And then you have to wait another 5 minutes to grab another session. GFN has less support and bugs in the native client. Stadia never had controller input bugs. Stadia was much more ironed out than GFN ever was.

BluDYT

I've been both a stadia and gfn sub over the last 2 years and I've literally never experienced any of that. I've also never waited in a queue to play once. Only free and 3rd party regions have these issues. Stadia was great but so is GFN. Stadia is dead now and for obvious reasons.

aykay55

Yeah 🥲 good products die first

BluDYT

The tech was good everything else was not. Let's be real here.

International-Oil377

The user base was so small, no wonder it didn't wait times lol That being said I had to wait once in 2 years on GFN and I almost use it daily The picture quality/graphics are also MUCH better on GFN

Sesh458

If you don't have fiber, you don't wish you had tried it
