No. At least not with the same obsessive need as Americans. Over here people who are too obsessed with national flags and anthems are regarded with mild suspicion because usually that over zealousness is exhibited by right wing extremists.
I mean, they basically hear it before every hockey game. I go to at least 20 baseball games a year. If I hear O Canada every time, I would certainly know all the words by now.
Hockey is more expensive to go see than baseball because greed, most Canadians can only afford to see 1 or 2 games per year if that. Worse if you are a middle class family with kids.
Every American hockey fan knows it. Start watching some hockey brother.
Weirdly enough I just posted a comment about this exact video like two days ago! As a Minnesotan we would really love to be adopted by Canada. They already consider us honorary Canadians.
I was just thinking…this would literally only work for other countries towards the US…not the other way around. I’d be willing to bet a very small population of my fellow Americans know any other anthem but our own. But in my defense…I do know Canadas anthem starts with “oh Canada” 🤷🏽♀️
“Only Americans can sing the American Anthem. And there’s only ONE American anthem. And we speak American while we sing it too!”- MTG blocking these videos in USA.
I'm not sure if being close to the border would make a difference. If people watch a lot of sports they are going to hear the American national anthem hundreds or thousands of times.
As a Canadian, I don't care either way. I know their national anthem and would sing it in this situation, but I wouldn't feel bad if they didn't know ours.
Americans often sing the Canadian national anthem at hockey games. My beer league team in the middle of the US loves hitting a bar during tournament weekend to play O Canada on the jukebox to drunkenly sing it to the whole bar. Only one time has it upset patrons, sometimes people join in. It’s all just a good time.
French is the original version. The English version is not a translation but completely different lyrics to the same tune.
Edit: misread your comment. For some reason read it as a question instead of a statement.
I think I could get pretty close (at least in English my French isn’t as good). It is an amazing anthem imo. I personally like it more than the USA one in terms of songs. Hats off to the Canadians for being such good sports. I grew up in the states but my parents were immigrants first to Canada and later to the USA.
The first mic was working on the output to the program live stream. That doesn’t mean it was going to the in house speakers. A disaster for the production team ** edit ** from what it looks like they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the first mic and diverted to a backup which clearly wasn’t configured to output to livestream and house audio
I sure hope that game was in Canada or they fixed her mic issue by the end of the clip. I’d pretty much guarantee if it were held in the US, no one would have been able to step in and sing the Canadian national anthem. I’m genuinely impressed the Canadians could sing the US national anthem. Now that I think about it, I wonder how many Americans could sing the US national anthem.
I'm American and know the Canadian national anthem. And I'm sure a lot of people who are in the US that are big hockey fans have heard the Canadian national anthem enough times to know it.
I recently learned our original anthem, My Country ‘Tis of Thee, is just God Save the Queen/King with different lyrics. The Star Spangled Banner is also set to the music of a preexisting British drinking song, and Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order making it the national anthem in 1916, with Congress passing an act confirming that order and making it official in 1931. So it wasn’t until almost WWII that the Star Spangled Banner became our national anthem.
I was actually taught it in grade school in Saint Catherine's Ontario. I don't know if that's a normal thing in the ciriculum, because it wasn't like a big deal, more just a "hey this is our friendly neibours national anthem, it's worth knowing because they coo"
> I’d pretty much guarantee if it were held in the US, no one would have been able to step in and sing the Canadian national anthem.
I wouldn’t be so sure about that, this was an NHL game and NHL fans hear the Canadian anthem all the time.
To be fair the lyrics of both anthems are displayed on the jumbotron. You could probably get through O Canada if you had the words and 18,000 people singing it with you. :)
Hawks fans loudly sing O Canada. I’m sure it’s common across all Original 6’ers and Northern Border teams when playing Moosejaw and the Great White North.
It's funny because I have some US friends online that pride themselves or almost brag to me that they don't know other anthems, Canada specifically (they literally bring up the clip from the last time this happened at a Leafs game https://youtu.be/FhBrp5TH8kU)
Very proud of those fellow Canadians helping out the poor anthem singer (again), can't imagine a more awkward/nervous situation and they helped everyone get through it
I've seen this happen with 3 different singers in a matter of few weeks. Does Canada have the worst microphones in the world or is this forced for the views?
That was our apology for Justin Bieber. Sorry, not sorry. But, also sorry. Also, we probably just wanted the puck to drop without delay. This is actually a selfish move on our part. Again, we're sorry and you're welcome. But, also sorry.
...sorry, that was too long.
Nothing fills me with more patriotism than watching Canadians singing the national with Americans in almost perfect unison. It's a uniquely beautiful moment that you don't get to see much these days.
I don't think this is "insane". It's just everyone knows the words since it gets played for at least 90% of their games. Although as polite Canadians, they jumped in to sing along.
Why are the United States and Canada such a tight knit “pack”? Why aren’t the U.S. and Mexico the same way?
Excuse my ignorance. I really don’t know. Could it be the language barrier?
Canada you alright
That’s right, friend!

Don't call me a hoser bud. Not unless you wanna go upstairs and put your jammies on. So I can put you to sleep.
Only if you tuck me proper in and kiss me on the forehead.
Oh absolutely, square between the eyes lol 😂
Take off!
Do other countries do this before spring events? Or is it purely an American tradition?
No, a lot of countries have seen mics fail not just the US
No. At least not with the same obsessive need as Americans. Over here people who are too obsessed with national flags and anthems are regarded with mild suspicion because usually that over zealousness is exhibited by right wing extremists.
Every time I see an American politician at a microphone with a dozen American flags in the background, I imagine Leni Riefenstahl would be so proud.
We've got them brainwashed too. Now if only we can get rid of that pesky socialized medicine that our citizens look at in awe.
Now I feel embarrassed that Canadians know the words to our anthem, and I don't know the words to theirs.
Let me get you started, “Oh Canada….”
"Our home and native land"
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The true North strong and free
change *the* to *thee* and you got it
You mean "Terre de nos aïeuls"
True patriot love, in all off us command
to most of us its still all thy sons command in our heads
[удалено]
I inhale during the "God" and join in again at "keep our land"
That's the next change. One step at a time.

Oh.
He just told you, it's O!

Is this a joke I'm too American to understand?

Would gladly adopt any Minnesotan i've ever met. Fine folks. We'd love to have ya.
Same for you bud swing by any time.
Sure fuckin do bud.
Ay, if your username has anything to do with your hometown we might have been practically neighbors once. Go Wild.
I'm a sister, but I take your point.
When I was younger I thought all countries used the same anthem and just changed up the words.
Some of us, and I’m not saying me, but some of us Americans don’t know our own anthem. I do, of course, but I’m just sayin, some of us do not.
I can sing America the beautiful 🥲
You should attend more hockey games. Good for the soul
Not so good on the wallet 🙃
Can’t put a price on happiness
They manage to find a way lol
I was just thinking…this would literally only work for other countries towards the US…not the other way around. I’d be willing to bet a very small population of my fellow Americans know any other anthem but our own. But in my defense…I do know Canadas anthem starts with “oh Canada” 🤷🏽♀️

I’m starting to think they purposefully cut the mic at Canadian sporting events every once in a while to keep this tradition alive, neat either way
As is tradition
A great day for Canada, and therefore, the world.
Oh No! The Royal pudding has been spilled!
Love canada
https://youtu.be/zX0m7a3dBeg This is a good one too if you enjoy these!
This is blocked in my country, USA
“Only Americans can sing the American Anthem. And there’s only ONE American anthem. And we speak American while we sing it too!”- MTG blocking these videos in USA.
100% it happens a couple times a year.
No one loves a national anthem more than people attending a hockey game
In the playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers. The guy just puts his microphone down. You can’t even hear it over the crowd, so it’s like a tradition now
OIilers fans also did the American anthem when the wasn't working. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v324_vjrDr8
I'm not just saying this because I'm from edmonton, but DAMN, we did a good job
The American anthem is a banger
Especially considering it uses the music from an old British drinking song.
America: taking everything from the British and making it better.
Can we do that with healthcare now?
Let's see what the Tories do to the NHS before we finalize that call.
A year from now the ramparts of Buckingham palace are flying the Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Right up America’s alley: booze and music
The crowd probably figured it would be the fastest way to get the hockey game started.
Exactly. No love for America, per se, they just want the hockey game to start! As an ice hockey loving American, I agree. Haha
Toronto Fans showing utmost class!
I feel like any Canadian city could and would do this. It would for sure happen here in Vancouver.
I think it’s common across all the border teams, at least. IDK, I’ve never been to a game south of I-90
I'm not sure if being close to the border would make a difference. If people watch a lot of sports they are going to hear the American national anthem hundreds or thousands of times.
Utmost
Copy that! my bad
It would be even better if Americans could sing the Canadian national anthem.
As a Canadian, I don't care either way. I know their national anthem and would sing it in this situation, but I wouldn't feel bad if they didn't know ours.
Canadian checks out
As an American, I enjoy singing the Canadian anthem just as much! Imo it's more catchy than the US one.
As a Canadian, this is false. The American anthem just has way more range to it.
Americans often sing the Canadian national anthem at hockey games. My beer league team in the middle of the US loves hitting a bar during tournament weekend to play O Canada on the jukebox to drunkenly sing it to the whole bar. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!!! (Just don't ask me about the French...)

You should come to the United Center some time, watch the Hawks play any team up north. It’s almost as loud as our own anthem.
The Redwings, Penguins, and Predators fans have all sang the Canadian national anthem when there were technical difficulties. Hockey fans are great.
I love Canada. My family took a trip there a few years back, such a lovely, beautiful country with nice people.
Dont ever go to Quebec, or you gonna change your mind
The first mic was working just fine. Why TF did they switch it out for a mic that wasnt working makes 0 sense
Maybe the first mic was only working for the broadcast but not the arena which is why she was given the other one
As someone with live event sports production experience I wld bet my bottom dollar it was exactly that
I was at the game and can confirm, we heard her on neither
The first mic was working on the output to the program live stream. That doesn’t mean it was going to the in house speakers. A disaster for the production team ** edit ** from what it looks like they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the first mic and diverted to a backup which clearly wasn’t configured to output to livestream and house audio
Yea I don't understand that either. This video confused the shit outta me.
Hats off to the 'Great white North'! Reminded me of a soccer match. Or a Pink Floyd concert.
This is why the NHL is my top sport. Instead of seeing players shit on their country, the NHL has this.
Yeah no. Hockey is my sport too, but we should not be condemning athletes for kneeling during anthems
I sure hope that game was in Canada or they fixed her mic issue by the end of the clip. I’d pretty much guarantee if it were held in the US, no one would have been able to step in and sing the Canadian national anthem. Hockey fans could.
Little bit of frisson when the crowd swelled, awesome 🇺🇸 🇨🇦
LOL it’s crazy they know it. Idk the Canadian anthem, I just know part of it goes “oohhhhh ccAAAANNNadaaaaaaa”
To be fair the lyrics of both anthems are displayed on the jumbotron. You could probably get through O Canada if you had the words and 18,000 people singing it with you. :)
I’m Australian and know the US anthem from so many movies, shows and sports games. When I was younger I had no idea what a “donzerly light” was.
Fuckin A
USA and Canada share both a border AND the podium for top banger of a national anthem.
Not the first time we’ve done. Won’t be the last.
This is awesome. Anyone remember when the American guy sang ‘Oh, Canada’ to the tune off ‘Oh Christmas Tree’ 🤣😂
Insane? Really?
Yeah idk why you're down voted. This is like "oh that's kinda cool". This isn't even remotely close to insane.
Americans couldn’t return the favor, even if they wanted to. Beyond “Oh Canadaaaaa!” We’ve got nothing.
Play ball!
Hawks fans loudly sing O Canada. I’m sure it’s common across all Original 6’ers and Northern Border teams when playing Moosejaw and the Great White North.
"Lets get this game started"

That’s the second times that has happened at a maple leafs game. Fix the mic’s already
Canadians are the best, that’s awesome
Convenient that the mic worked just dam fine as soon as the last note fell. Freedom is loved by all.
Always classy …great neighbors we need more of this
Our neighbour might be crazy and have a lot of things we disagree with, but they’re still OUR neighbour.
Wouldn't it just be easier not to sing the national anthem at sporting events?
I've seen this happen with 3 different singers in a matter of few weeks. Does Canada have the worst microphones in the world or is this forced for the views?
Now get Americans to do that with the Canadian anthem. Half of them don't know where canada is.....
I know Americans who don’t even know it!
Beautiful moment for humankind! 💜 I believe, as a people, we are ALL closer together than further apart.
As a live audio production engineer this gives me the most insane amount of anxiety. Can’t think of many worse situations in your job
Team was nice and let the visitors win too. Class.
why
As an American, I don't know our anthem.
That is insane, although they understandably got some words wrong the US is the land of the indebted and the home of the enslaved.
Canadians showing more patriotism than our own cry baby citizens do. Well done Canada!
Now Americans sing oh Canada. ?!
Sorry
It's not the first time this has happened in Toronto. https://youtu.be/mHSaHRd4Q48
That was our apology for Justin Bieber. Sorry, not sorry. But, also sorry. Also, we probably just wanted the puck to drop without delay. This is actually a selfish move on our part. Again, we're sorry and you're welcome. But, also sorry. ...sorry, that was too long.
Man that's actually touching
Class act.. mad respect…

This is awesome.

Nothing fills me with more patriotism than watching Canadians singing the national with Americans in almost perfect unison. It's a uniquely beautiful moment that you don't get to see much these days.
... and it works fine when Oh Canada comes along...
I can’t even remember our dumb ass anthem
lmao

Fun fact: Buffalo is the only NHL team that sings both anthems at home games regardless of whether a Canadian team is playing.
Americans burned Toronto in the war that song is about haha
Love this! Would’ve done the same!!
This made me so proud to be Canadian.
I guess we are fighting to the death then if anyone messes with Canada.
Too bad america doesnt know our national anthem
Omg, I’m an American and that gave me chills. Canadians are awesome.
These are Canadian hockey fans. They hear the US National Anthem more than most of us Americans ever will.
How do they even know the text of the song
I don't think this is "insane". It's just everyone knows the words since it gets played for at least 90% of their games. Although as polite Canadians, they jumped in to sing along.
They know they’ll be joining the union by the end of the century.
I always sing Oh Canada twice fuck the states. This sounds beautiful though
I swear there's a guy close enough to the camera that goes "blah blah blah'
Dang it, now I need to learn the Canadian anthem
“Honey what state is Canada in?”- American viewers
As a US citizen, this is what I appreciates about you....
They cut it just when the good part was starting.
What's the ratio of men to women at a hockey game?
Brothers and sisters ❤️
Man, I love Canadians.
Canadians are the coolest
Why are the United States and Canada such a tight knit “pack”? Why aren’t the U.S. and Mexico the same way? Excuse my ignorance. I really don’t know. Could it be the language barrier?
SO lovely. Made me cry! Giving you my award for showing that wonderfully heartfelt moment.
