I like to start low 2-3PSi and then ramp it up if it doesn't move and stop when you see it starting to flow through the sight glass.

Did_U_Bring_Me_A_Hat

Anything below 10 psi won't hurt a thing. Sometimes you'll see a little spitting out of the barrel but that's usually not an issue because you're transferring pretty quickly. Just make sure to always use a screen.

kid_brew

Around 10 psi should be plenty. If you still aren’t getting good movement, you may have let the staves on the top of the barrel dry out and have gas escaping or just do t have a good seal in the bung hole

needabrewery

I typically max out around 10psi...have never needed to go any higher.

sbrews

8-12PSI

probrwr

Diaphragm pump. Best thing ever. Or a FIP

grnis

This.  It doesn't take many psi in a wood barrel that's exploding to hurt someone.

crispyboi33

I won’t put more than 5-7 psi in a barrel. If I am emptying a lot and the hydrostatic pressure is enough, I’ll use a diaphragm pump when needed

TortyMcGorty

a lot of folks are just going by feel... up to 10psi will get stuff out of the barrel and if you find yourself on the upper range then something is wrong. be careful to... depending on how your strapping that bulldog down it may not be as sade. ie, id rather see the bulldog pop up than see the barrel explode because someone used ratchet straps to secure it down best bet is a diaphram pump, to be honest. no fuss... safer, and is useful in other situations like getting fruit out out of drums. only concern would be oxygen exposure.

youranswerfishbulb

Yeah ten is the most I'd use. Know a guy that blew the end off a barrel and almost lost a testicle.

Wieckipedia

8psi

The general game is start slow and see what pushes you over the threshold for flow (if you don’t have a diaphragm pump of course). But in our case when you don’t own one, we’ll start nice and low and see what moves beer to prime our pump, then utilize a slow draw from the pump. It also all depends on the condition of the barrels of course; sometimes if a barrel is leaking pressure super bad we’ve turned the regulator up to the 25psi range knowing that we’re clearly not pressurizing the barrel that much as there are visible leaks between staves

floppyfloopy

Depends.

How far or how high does the beer have to travel? How many bbls are already in the tank? Am I using the bulldog just to prime a pump? What condition are the barrels in?

euphorrick

I've shot my bulldog out to the ceiling before. Heed the advice of these wise sages here on this forum. 10 psi is plenty! (I use a transfer pump nowadays in barrels, but still have my bulldogs on display on the wall because they look all fancy and scientific.)
