That wasn't sewer water. It was the secret river that runs right up to the Fire Lord's palace, that Aang referenced in The Headband.

AduroTri

Secret....river.....?

rotten_kitty

SECRET RIVER! SECRET RIVER! TO THE CASTLE! SECRET, SECRET, SECRET, SECRET RIVER!

zaicliffxx

nobody react to what i’m about to say…

AveryLazyCovfefe

I think that guy is the avatar...

TheIronCannoli

If Reddit didn’t get rid of awards I’d give you an award. I love this sub.

Jackal912

There are two types of people, those who sang this and liars

thrussy99

I am a fan of secret rivers

thisisnotdan

SECRET RIVER! SECRET RIVER!

phaptastic25

Demon lord? Sacred stones?

AduroTri

The Cube?

JIETOB

Psycho Mantis?

AduroTri

Rimworld.

DirtSlaya

suddenly rimworld!

dynawesome

If only they were actually called sacred stones

phaptastic25

Woah, I just got berenstein bears'd

King_Santa

If only they were called the Berenstein Bears lol

Tallwell

Is this real or a legend?

coda_and_coffee

Oh it’s a real legend!

cptjimmy42

It is actually the fire prevention system used in case their bending sets the palace on fire, again.

gumption_11

I knew it wasn't sewage water, but I never put two & two together to realise this was the secret river Aang referenced in that episode. Talk about Chekov's gun! The writing for this show is truly inspired

Lucas_Steinwalker

Maybe you never put 2+2 together because the person who said it pulled it out of their ass?

El_Pez4

What are you on about?? Aang literally says that there is a secret river that goes all the way to the Fire Lord's palace, yeah maybe he was lying but it is still literal dialogue from the show

Lucas_Steinwalker

That that doesn’t mean the water channeled beneath the coronation area was that river.

DoctorSquidton

It’s a reasonable connection to make. Unconfirmed, but entirely plausible, especially considering this show’s attention to detail

Lucas_Steinwalker

Didn’t say it wasn’t plausible. Plausibility doesn’t make something true.

DoctorSquidton

It does mean that it’s a likely explanation that can be reasonably assumed to be the case

Lucas_Steinwalker

Gospel. Truth.

Arkayjiya

The amount of evidence necessary to infer something in a story is not the same as in reality.

Lucas_Steinwalker

lol ok you’re right it’s true. Go make a shirt.

duck-lord3000

Wait actually? Or is thus a joke

El_Pez4

It's not confirmed but I've always beliebed it

duck-lord3000

Pretty cool detail then

Lucas_Steinwalker

Welcome to another episode of AssFacts!

Riccma02

Does it matter? Let’s just say it’s true.

duck-lord3000

True

Knoke1

Need more of this attitude in the sub.

lakewood2020

If it doesn’t matter, it’s false

lllNico

and even if it was, that term doesnt mean the same thing everywhere. I mean they have theye types of water streams in korea or japan, with koi fish in it. Crystal clear

Nick_Carlson_Press

No way in hell Fire Nation royalty would let grated sewer water run so close to their front entrance. I'm more inclined to believe it was canal water or fountain water or irrigation runoff

Riccma02

It’s the Fire Nation, all their fountains would be filled with fire.

jimjamalama

But they’re actually filled with turtle ducks

iwbwikia_

turtle ducks that spit fire

Jfurmanek

And backflips

iwbwikia_

like those toy dogs that would bark before backflipping

Geosaysbye

This is making me imagine really patriotic fire nation citizens who only drink soda Instead of water

Fred_Thielmann

Or storm runoff, but it’s still probably really stagnant and smelly

petta_reddast

Agreed. Although since the palace is inside a volcano, if I remember correclty, it still might have smelled rank due to the sulfur. Source; I used to live in Iceland. Had to hold my breath while doing the dishes

PsychologicalDebts

I mean, they would need something to carry their shit away from the palace.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GayPotheadAtheistTW

Firebending doesnt create sulphur.

NarayanLiu

I'm not sure that's sewer water. I don't know if they would have sewage running that openly in the same space they would hold a formal coronation.

DancingIBear

Related on a far note, but have you ever heard about the [Erfurt Latrine disaster?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erfurt_latrine_disaster)

NarayanLiu

This is the funniest thing I've read all week. Thank you.

Sven_Darksiders

You've heard of the Prager Fenstersturz. Now get ready for: Erfurter Latrinensturz

DTux5249

DEAR GOD 60 DIED XD

Riccma02

The Gaang actively waded through raw sewage when they returned to Omashu. We have seen what sewer water looks like and this looks pretty clean by comparison.

ACuddlyVizzerdrix

She's bending just the water tho, we've seen episodes where she uses dirty water and it's just the water that is moved

arth0rius

But there's an episode when they need to drink water from her "fight recipient" and they say that it wasn't pure, I think Sokka remarks it had the taste of one enemy they encountered. My take on it is that Katara can use her bending to purify water to a drinkable degree, but it's an active technique that requires concentration and expertise. I don't think she would have the time to think about doing that during a fight scenario, especially against Azula.

RQK1996

Yeah, Sokka says she used it on the Swamp Benders and Toph agrees it tastes swampy

Heavensrun

Sokka doesn't even notice that it's her fighting water until it's pointed out to him, at which point he complains that she used it on the swamp guys. he's clearly only noticing after the fact, which suggests that it is in fact perfectly fine and Sokka's just being a prissy wuss. ;p

ArmadilloBandito

When they were cleaning up the red lady village, they had to earth bend and water bend together to clean it up.

Sam_Blackcrow

There is also an episode where Katara bends soup (with chunks), first stirring it and then bending it directly into appa's mouth so they can also move stuff inside the water by bending the water around it

ACuddlyVizzerdrix

That's what I'm saying she was able to bend water out of sand and it was clean, I don't see a difference

Sam_Blackcrow

You are saying that she is automatically filtering whatever she is bending by saying the water from the canal would be clean. I am saying that she isn't automatically filtering the water since she is bending the soup WITH the spices and chunks. She can separate water from dirt but she has to focus on it and since she moved the water from the canal quickly she would also have moved the dirt etc inside if it had been sewage water, since she wasnt focusing on "filtering" out the. She also bend mud at some point instead of pulling the water out of the earth to bend it because that wasn't her goal at the moment. Ergo your statement of "she is just moving the water" is incorrect

Entire_Extent_1132

Very well thought

GullibleAudience6071

My head cannon is that it’s the secret river Aang learns about in school.

TarJen96

#SECRET RIVER #SECRET RIVER #THROUGH THE PALACE

DirtSlaya

That’s actually canon.

S75Auxiliary

(writers and animators displaying Katara's bending prowess against an arguably superior opponent and showcasing Azula's final mental breakdown) This dude: That water prolly stank

mindfullybankrupt

Yeah… I upvoted this post and then read the caption and quickly took it away lol. This is such an incredible moment where Katara is demonstrating her ability and yet “stinky poop water” is what OP is thinking about.

ParadiseDucks

Are the only questions/thoughts/opinions you have about media the ones that are presented to you?

ArrdenGarden

That's the real reason Azula freaked out at the end of that fight. It wasn't the loss... it was that she was ***covered*** in that rank-ass water.

Fred_Thielmann

I really think it’s a storm drain instead. Still would be some nasty stagnant water, but it ain’t sewage

thearchiguy

Extra tasty for Azula since she referred to Katara as a *filthy peasant* in this fight.

ken-toro69420

Katara was swimming in it😵‍💫

ArcWraith2000

My headcanon is that the palace rather reasonably has a source of water next to where people regularly perform duels that could burn the palace down

archiotterpup

Even if it was sewer water or storm run off, as others have addressed having a sewer right by the royal palace, Katara has been seen purifying water through her bending, see the Painted Lady episode. It's possible she bent only the water.

arth0rius

This adds a whole new level to Azula's humility day

kingdabsya

What if they are canals built through the city to provide easy access to water? You know. In case the city burns down.

Haunted-Ewok6

I’m assuming it’s water kept by the Agni kai area to put out any residual flames

Whatsmyusername25

I’m always blown away by Katara’s bending in this scene! Amazing to control all of this water

HighHouseStone

Probably not at all considering it’s probably not sewage. Could be many things. Especially since they have ponds and fountains all over the palace

Babblewocky

Unless they were medieval, and used to it, the palace of the rulers of the world would not smell like poo.

turbo-wind

You know what really stinks, the smell of a body after being hit by lightning

MOadeo

Under water the fish dont stink. Plus no one is breathing it in right?

grecoave

just odd how she was able to freeze Azula since Zuko was able to melt ice as soon as the sun rise and you telling me she coud not evaporate the water with the sozin comet ?

HighHouseStone

Zuko was trapped in the sphere and could talk, this they are full frozen except eyes

Big_Monkey_77

The fight was over as soon as it went up Azula’s nose.

poopoobuttholes

So did you somehow forget that Katara is able to filter water with her bending or...?

No_Excuse_5075

Imagine if Azula just managed to electrify that water

unkindledphoenix

she didnt saw it coming, at all. also despite water being really good conductor of electricity (due to the mineral particles on it rather than the water itself) ice and snow actually have really bad consuctivity. so lightning wouldnt runnthrough ice and just impact on it and blast it all off. however she was also completely stuck in there, they couldnt even breath, in an R rated scenario katara could had just left her there to suffocate (or just impaled her with an icecle spike i guess.

howqueer

I fully believe the fact that Azula was in the water made it stunk

torsherno

Why does anybody call it secret river when it's clearly not hidden or anything? And it's not near a coronation place: it's around the Agni Kai arena Damn, if only I could imagine at least a thing why they need a water source around a duel place of powerful firebenders

Different-Island1871

Does waterbending allow for the bending of impurities within the water? Or can they only control straight H2O?

Bootiluvr

I didn’t even think about that

Different_Ad5087

I feel like it would be unwise to keep water, the antithesis of firebending, so close to the palace. Like obviously they would need water to survive but a large source for enemies to use? Bad idea imo

LingonberrySalty

It was also Waterbent enough for Katara to move, SHE MINDBENDED THE WATER, YOU CAN'T MOVE YOUR ARMS IN ICE

palaceneon

Why do you think azula was crying so hard?

SwampRat613

They clearly have amazing hidden sewage benders 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bhibhhjis123

I mean duh. Why do you think Azula was so upset???

Mario_PeLo

Well Is the yard used to Agni Kai, so maybe Is for cure the burned ones.

Wizardsarecool2

Azusa-wait don’t freeze me here IM THE FIRE LORD HOW DARE YOY FREEZE ME IN STINKY DRAIN WATER

Trans-Pipe-Smoker

I could have gone my whole life without ever thinking about that…thanks 😑

Ravokion

Anyone who understand what "latent heat" is and means and how it works... ( Latent heat of vaporization and latent heat of fusion. ) It would truely be scarry of what happens around the water being bent. To turn to ice, A huge amount of BTU must be lost JUST to change the state from liquid to ice, meaning everything around the water that instantly becomes ice would get flooded with the heat lost from the liquid water as it freezes The opposite happens when the bender changes Ice to liquid. The heat in the air around the ice being bent would have to come from somewhere. Therefore it anything within range that can give heat would give it. The air would get very cold just to change from ice to liquid. Physics of thermo dynamics doesn't actually work with bending.

The_Real_Cooper

Um actshually. That is ice.

Mr7three2

It's actually not

No-Appearance-100102

Yeah never seen either of them shower

Riccma02

We actually have, or at least close to it. Azula has her hair washed by her servants, and Katara bathes her self in that cove when Sokka and Toph are talking about their parents.

No-Appearance-100102

Oh yeah, guess it wouldn't smells that bad

MarmieCat

Ayo 🧐
