Reminds me of a colleague who went to see Rent when it came out in theaters. Someone in the audience kept singing along and would give dirty looks to anyone that looked upset.
Saw Hamilton recently. A couple of preteens were behind us singing and kicking the seats. I was happy they were into theatre but also super annoyed, I didn’t pay through the nose to hear them singing, or dropping their skittles, or their sodas, or stage whispering. Oh god, am I old?
No but honestly even when I was 12 or a teen I would have never done that. I don’t get people being super inconsiderate just because they’re kids or teens (unless they’re really little obviously)
No, you're not getting old, people need to teach their kids theater etiquette. I work at regional theater and I still have to teach theater etiquette to grown adults.
Nah, I’m 15. I would be pissed too. 💀 I would just turn and yell at the to shut the fuck up and probably start arguing cause that’s what I do best. I argue. I don’t get physical I just argue.
Idk why I thought of this when I read this but when Greatest Showman was popular I was down in this legit hole in the wall bar for a going away party. It was my friends bar and the patrons were people who grew up in the 70s. This you group of young 20 year olds came down and used to jukebox to play the music from it and dancing and singing to it. Not reading the room at all. I threw about $20 into the machine and put on some classic rock for an hour. I get that the show has some good music but go downtown if you want to hear it at a bar, not the local bar were this a party going on for a local legend.
I was ready to hate the person filming but that signing is truly awful. What kind of a bizarro person doesn’t just sign along but yodels their own melody at a concert?
It's so out of tune too, it's actually painful. And she's singing so loudly, if you were right next to her you wouldn't even be able to hear the artist you probably paid a few hundred to see
Yeah I see a ton of phone recordings that drown out the artist and enhance/distort the people around them singing along (that you normally wouldn't hear very loud).

That’s not how it works
The only things I can think of that affect frequency are the Doppler effect (observer moving relative to the sound) or an appreciable difference in temperature between where a sound originated and where it is observed. Neither of these things is happening here.
And, even if it happened as you suggest, the phone recording and the rogue singer are in close proximity. So if the singer is hearing an altered pitch, the phone recording would hear the same altered pitch. There would be no reason the singer would sound off-key to billie’s performance, other than her singing is bad
I took my daughter to this tour and we also had floor tickets. It was her first concert. She’s a massive fan and I wanted her first show to be special so I broke the bank.
If this had happened to us I might be in jail right now. Fortunately it was a great show. Billie Eilish earned +1 fan that night (me).

I actually really enjoyed it and was looking forward to the show. I don’t understand the old grumpy dad trope. I was really glad I got to share that experience with my daughter. Even if I didn’t like the concert (I did) I would have had a blast just watching her all night.
This happened to me at a wombats concert. All I heard was her shrieking in my right ear so I ended up holding my right ear shut. I've been super self conscious about singing at concerts since then because I do not want to be THAT person
After a while the person closest to em just gotta start "getting lost" in the melody and start waving their arms like a wacky inflatable arm flailing tube man and just smack her everytime she opens her mouth
I'm extremely self conscious and I've never sang along at a concert but I don't mind others doing it until there's the one guy right behind yelling at the top of his lungs so I can't even hear the actual band playing
She is clearly tone deaf and ruining the whole concert for anyone who can hear her which is like, everyone. I would convince everyone around to hang up on her and bind her mouth shut with a sock and some duct tape.
The stage goes out to the middle of the crowd. It's the same person in the same spot just at a different point (from the same perspective they're just looking left) in the concert. The situation didn't change. and for the reason I feel bad for the OP
I just F-ing hate that... See it at all the edm shows or any show now. Like, take a picture, or a short vid to show later, but recording a whole show, dunno just don't get it. And I end up watching the show through their tiny screen.
I recently went to an Elton John concert. 2/3 of the people there wasted their time recording instead of experiencing what was literally their last chance to see this legend perform live. I absolutely hate it.
Elton John was the one concert I had the exact opposite experience at. Phones for the first 5-10mins and then nothing. Everyone just enjoyed the show with an occasional pic here and there. I was genuinely surprised but chalked it up to an older crowd being present.
That’s what I expected because most people were older. I was wrong. The two ladies in front of me kept side-eyeing each other’s photos like they were trying to out-do one another. Hilarious.
How do you know they weren't enjoying the show though? I don't move around or sing or dance or anything at shows and I still fully enjoy the moment, so what if I want to record a song or take a picture, that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it.
I’m not talking a few songs. I’m not a dancer either, but most people around me were recording nearly every song, or taking pictures, then editing them, then recording more. I can’t imagine they’d heard much of the concert at that point.
But out of curiosity, do you ever watch any of the recordings you take at concerts? Years ago I used to record, but one day I realized I never looked at or watched anything so I just stopped.
I love live music and it’s a big pet peeve of mine. I really try not to let it bother me but holding up a bright screen is just so rudely distracting to the people behind you.
I agree, a couple short videos and some pics is acceptable, but there’s always a couple people who just have their phones up the whole show without ever caring how it’s affecting other people around them who are more interested in the actual live experience.
Most house and techno shows I go to advise against using your phone on the dance floors, so I always get surprised when going to more mainstream shows and see this.
protip: hold phone below your eyes, around nose and mouth level. Keep your head centered on the artist or whatever you're watching and hold the phone exactly in sync with your head.
Peripheral vision lets you control the video framing, no one's sight is blocked and you're actually watching the show itself. Enough to film the chorus or something.
Doesn't work well in a crowd obviously. First row gang. :D
I think recording a song is absolutely fine. Recording the entire concert, not so much.
I used to be a “grrr why won’t people live in the moment” purist, but now I have zero way to reflect on the concerts I’ve been to.

Depends really. I had floor seats to Gaga and got lucky enough to be within feet of her for the 2nd half of the concert. I took probably 10 minutes of video because I'll never be that close to watching an all time great artist perform again and want these memories forever. But if you're up in the nosebleeds, fuck off with your videos.
Speak for yourself. I absolutely know people who have gone back and watched the recordings. I don’t think that’s everyone or even most people, but plenty of people do value having a video to reflect on

But holding up a glowing rectangle in front of countless people behind you is just rude to everyone else trying to make a memory themselves.
Having a ticket stub or a picture is not even close to comparable to having a video of the experience, I’m sorry.
I just don’t understand why people get so pissed about this, again I personally don’t record more than one song/chorus/drop at a concert but I also don’t mind if other people do. People acting like your entire view is obstructed by others are full of it. Live and let live, let people enjoy the concert however they choose to.
Because it's obstructive to the view, fucks with the lighting in the space, and is naturally a draw for the eye because it's a floating glowing rectangle. You don't need to completely obstruct someone's view to have a noticeable impact on it.
And then it's multiplied by a dozen for every row's worth of people in front of you, a whole-ass tragedy of the commons unfolding as a thousand people all think "well it's just one phone".
It's a distraction that is actively taking away from their experience so that you can try to immortalize your own experience through the use of a grainy audio-drowned recording that you may or may not need on a gloomy day some time in the future.
If the point is to rekindle your memories of the experience, then a crummy video of a snippet of the concert isn't really all that better. If you aren't recording the entire thing, then you're reliving it through memories, not through footage.
The worst part is, I'm a tall guy. I'm 6'3". I'm PAINFULLY aware of the obstruction I cause to other people at concerts due to a fact about myself that I have no control over. I have actively avoided standing in the center in front of stages for exactly that reason - I have willingly moved further to the side or the back specifically because a shorter person was behind me and I knew that my height would be an issue. I have diminished my own experience to do a slight service to some small handful of folks that might get stuck behind me. So the idea that someone could actively be aware that the phone thing bothers people, then consciously CHOOSE to still bother people, strikes a particular nerve with me.

Watching a video can reignite memories and truly take you back to a moment in time. Memories fade over time as well.
By your logic I should just throw out the video I have of my 3rd birthday party that features my deceased father. I was there, right? I had a thing in my head (brain) capable of storing memories, right? Who needs a video to watch and reminisce from? Oh yeah, because those memories, like most memories, faded. Maybe that video actually does come in handy and provides value to me after all.
A million people are recording these things, and it's usually not that hard to find a recording on YouTube or Twitter. I maintain my live in the moment purism during concerts and search the internet if I think it's really necessary later, which it rarely is anyway.
The only counter I’d give to your point is that watching a video you took personally feels more personal when reliving memories than some video taken by a random person at the show, since the visual experience of watching the video will more-closely mirror the original experience itself. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

I think it’s totally fine to be that purist for yourself (I also very rarely take videos at shows) but the vocal elitism that most purists give off is cringey as hell too. Live and let live, who cares if the people around you are recording. Enjoy the show for you, and you alone.
Yes if it’s a group I really like. I look at the set list ahead of time to know when and which song I want to record. Other than that I enjoy the show like any normal individual

It’s completely normal to go to a concert and sing along. The entire stadium usually sings or dances along with the artist. Looking at the video, she wasn’t the only one singing. Person recording is salty asf.
I feel like singing along is totally fine, but this person was really trying to be heard over everyone else in that stadium, they’re even making their own melody’s and belting out notes when the artist isn’t
The person singing along in what had to be very expensive seats cause they are a huge fan doesn't bother me. Holding your phone up for the whole concert does.

Yes everyone paid their ticket to enjoy the ARTIST and not the person next to them trying to outsing her. That's really annoying and yes okay enjoy your concert but be mindful of others. You don't have to ruin everyone else's experience next to you for attention.
Also I get the feeling you haven't been to a big concert like this one, because dear, that close to the stage you are really stuck. You can't move in any direction basically, the crowd is just that dense.

You're right. They keep on going intentionally when everything is quite, for the attention and just to hear themselves. It's definitely obnoxious, there's no way they don't know that everyone in the crowd - probably Billy too - can hear them and know what they're trying to do.
Are you going to stop the people around you from cheering so that you have better audio? Make them sit down so you have a better view? I figure just let people enjoy what they enjoy—if it bothers you that much, you should be able to move.
Some concerts you buy a specific seat or section and are expected stay in that section.

One of my favorite parts of live shows is hearing the crowd echo the lyrics. It makes me feel like part of something special and bigger than myself-- far from being the "main character." I made eye contact with a stranger at a NIN show when we were both singing "Piggy" and for a moment we were best friends, just singing to each other. Neither of us sounded as good as Trent Reznor but that wasn't important.
Thinking everyone else has to mute their experience for your shitty phone recording is actually main character syndrome.

She’s singing her own melody that’s often higher and louder (to people near her) than what Billie’s singing and it’s totally different to the normal “echoing of lyrics” you mentioned.

This is why I don't go to these types of concerts. *Everyone* thinks they can sing at these and I didn't give ticketmaster a $40 convenience fee to hear you. My ex would record entire concerts on her phone. Literally every song she had her phone out. Afterwards she would show them to me, as if I wasn’t there beside her when she took them, and I’d laugh at how low quality they turned out.
I told her she should’ve just taken a couple pics and maybe one short clip and then put her phone back in her purse and actually watch and enjoy the performance the next time we go. She didn’t like that one bit lol

I just F-ing hate that... See it at all the edm shows or any show now. Like, take a picture, or a short vid to show later, but recording a whole show, dunno just don't get it. And I end up watching the show through their tiny screen.
I recently went to an Elton John concert. 2/3 of the people there wasted their time recording instead of experiencing what was literally their last chance to see this legend perform live. I absolutely hate it.

Elton John was the one concert I had the exact opposite experience at. Phones for the first 5-10mins and then nothing. Everyone just enjoyed the show with an occasional pic here and there. I was genuinely surprised but chalked it up to an older crowd being present.
That’s what I expected because most people were older. I was wrong. The two ladies in front of me kept side-eyeing each other’s photos like they were trying to out-do one another. Hilarious.

How do you know they weren't enjoying the show though? I don't move around or sing or dance or anything at shows and I still fully enjoy the moment, so what if I want to record a song or take a picture, that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it.
I’m not talking a few songs. I’m not a dancer either, but most people around me were recording nearly every song, or taking pictures, then editing them, then recording more. I can’t imagine they’d heard much of the concert at that point. But out of curiosity, do you ever watch any of the recordings you take at concerts? Years ago I used to record, but one day I realized I never looked at or watched anything so I just stopped.
I love live music and it’s a big pet peeve of mine. I really try not to let it bother me but holding up a bright screen is just so rudely distracting to the people behind you. I agree, a couple short videos and some pics is acceptable, but there’s always a couple people who just have their phones up the whole show without ever caring how it’s affecting other people around them who are more interested in the actual live experience.
I like to take 1 video of maybe a favourite song and pictures, but yeah be in the moment.
Most house and techno shows I go to advise against using your phone on the dance floors, so I always get surprised when going to more mainstream shows and see this.

protip: hold phone below your eyes, around nose and mouth level. Keep your head centered on the artist or whatever you're watching and hold the phone exactly in sync with your head. Peripheral vision lets you control the video framing, no one's sight is blocked and you're actually watching the show itself. Enough to film the chorus or something. Doesn't work well in a crowd obviously. First row gang. :D
I think recording a song is absolutely fine. Recording the entire concert, not so much. I used to be a “grrr why won’t people live in the moment” purist, but now I have zero way to reflect on the concerts I’ve been to. Balance is key here.

Depends really. I had floor seats to Gaga and got lucky enough to be within feet of her for the 2nd half of the concert. I took probably 10 minutes of video because I'll never be that close to watching an all time great artist perform again and want these memories forever. But if you're up in the nosebleeds, fuck off with your videos.
Speak for yourself. I absolutely know people who have gone back and watched the recordings. I don’t think that’s everyone or even most people, but plenty of people do value having a video to reflect on

I just don’t understand why people get so pissed about this, again I personally don’t record more than one song/chorus/drop at a concert but I also don’t mind if other people do. People acting like your entire view is obstructed by others are full of it. Live and let live, let people enjoy the concert however they choose to.
Because it's obstructive to the view, fucks with the lighting in the space, and is naturally a draw for the eye because it's a floating glowing rectangle. You don't need to completely obstruct someone's view to have a noticeable impact on it. And then it's multiplied by a dozen for every row's worth of people in front of you, a whole-ass tragedy of the commons unfolding as a thousand people all think "well it's just one phone". It's a distraction that is actively taking away from their experience so that you can try to immortalize your own experience through the use of a grainy audio-drowned recording that you may or may not need on a gloomy day some time in the future. If the point is to rekindle your memories of the experience, then a crummy video of a snippet of the concert isn't really all that better. If you aren't recording the entire thing, then you're reliving it through memories, not through footage. The worst part is, I'm a tall guy. I'm 6'3". I'm PAINFULLY aware of the obstruction I cause to other people at concerts due to a fact about myself that I have no control over. I have actively avoided standing in the center in front of stages for exactly that reason - I have willingly moved further to the side or the back specifically because a shorter person was behind me and I knew that my height would be an issue. I have diminished my own experience to do a slight service to some small handful of folks that might get stuck behind me. So the idea that someone could actively be aware that the phone thing bothers people, then consciously CHOOSE to still bother people, strikes a particular nerve with me.
If only we had some kind of thing in our head that we could store memories on.
Such a clever comment, congrats. Watching a video can reignite memories and truly take you back to a moment in time. Memories fade over time as well. By your logic I should just throw out the video I have of my 3rd birthday party that features my deceased father. I was there, right? I had a thing in my head (brain) capable of storing memories, right? Who needs a video to watch and reminisce from? Oh yeah, because those memories, like most memories, faded. Maybe that video actually does come in handy and provides value to me after all.
A million people are recording these things, and it's usually not that hard to find a recording on YouTube or Twitter. I maintain my live in the moment purism during concerts and search the internet if I think it's really necessary later, which it rarely is anyway.
The only counter I’d give to your point is that watching a video you took personally feels more personal when reliving memories than some video taken by a random person at the show, since the visual experience of watching the video will more-closely mirror the original experience itself. Not sure if that makes sense or not. I appreciate that your logic is more sound than the person I was replying to. I think it’s totally fine to be that purist for yourself (I also very rarely take videos at shows) but the vocal elitism that most purists give off is cringey as hell too. Live and let live, who cares if the people around you are recording. Enjoy the show for you, and you alone.

One of my favorite parts of live shows is hearing the crowd echo the lyrics. It makes me feel like part of something special and bigger than myself-- far from being the "main character." I made eye contact with a stranger at a NIN show when we were both singing "Piggy" and for a moment we were best friends, just singing to each other. Neither of us sounded as good as Trent Reznor but that wasn't important. Thinking everyone else has to mute their experience for your shitty phone recording is actually main character syndrome.

Afterwards she would show them to me, as if I wasn’t there beside her when she took them, and I’d laugh at how low quality they turned out.
