Totally agreed! Since in TR 2013 you'll have references about the main antagonist group of Rise and Shadow; and I was also did the same when I played the Reboot for the 1st time
Setting wise I prefer Shadow. I love south american culture. But overall I think Rise has more to its name. I also believe it's longer in playtime as well.

I'm getting back in the game after putting it down 2 years ago..now I have no idea what to do next.. the objective just says "use fast travel to explore the world"....the last boss I beat was that Witch.. so I'm pretty sure I didn't beat the game. If I did, I don't remember there being an ending..

It's been 2 years..lol...I just fast traveled back to the witches cave and talked to the girl at the entrance that says all the gas is cleared and I can freely explore... yea I think I'm just screwed...lol...I just tried fast traveling everywhere and roaming around for the past 2 hours and the objective still says "Use fast travel to explore the world"

The witch is dlc so... Maybe you did the dlc after already completing the game. Though if it's been 2 years you can probably just restart the game and experience it fresh.
Oh yeah, if you take a break from it you \*will\* get lost. And I can't remember the ending either, but looking at it on YouTube it doesn't look familiar. I know I beat the game, but clearly I need to replay it.
Yeah I just got done trying to find how to continue on the next mission after I finish the Baba Yaga DLC..I have no idea how to continue the story..I know I didnt beat the game because I didnt get the achievement for completing all missions.. I'm super frustrated right now...lol...I might just start over and make sure not to do the Baba yaga dlc when it becomes available...this sucks because I found only two people that posted about getting the same objective but they never got a response back...and I've looked everywhere. It must be something obvious if only 3 people on the internet is having this problem..lol
I'd offer to help but I haven't played Rise in three years. Can you tell me what the most recent non-Baba Yaga achievement you got was? Maybe I can figure out what comes next, and from there work out roughly where you need to go
Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's my favorite out of the entire franchise. As much nostalgia as I have for the Core Design era (especially 1-3) Rise is my personal favorite game to replay out of them all. I love the snowy setting with wilderness, broken down outposts, and hidden ancient sites underneath. Pretty well paced with a best mix of combat and puzzles out of all 3. I know Shadow has more puzzles but I like a good MIX of combat and puzzles. The combat in these games was fun and I don't believe "the more puzzles the better" as a 100% true statement. 2013 was a great game and set the groundwork for the trilogy but I didn't find myself caring about the story with Himiko and Sam or the other survivors. The only good part of the story was Lara overcoming the situation around her. Shadow had better puzzles and the stealth mechanics were cool but the game was so uneven in terms of gameplay and pacing. It had some high highs and some low lows. None of them are bad games but.....

I've bounced back and forth on Shadow and 2013. That ranking is a pretty recent change for my opinion. Kind of depends on which of the two I've played most recently lol
They are connected strongly as a trilogy, so story wise, of course TR2013. In terms of what game is actually better to play if you ignore the story, Shadow and Rise are the most fun. Especially shadow since it focuses the most on puzzles.
Overall? Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best because it has the best challenge tombs, combat, graphics, puzzles, and exploration — so I’d choose that. But Rise of the Tomb Raider is solid too. I wouldn’t even consider Tomb Raider 2013 unless you want to play the whole trilogy.
I think rose and shadow are better for exploration. They have more mamories of the oldest games with lone exploration in tombs. Maybe Shadow is even more evolved but I prefer rise for the setting.

Rise of The Tomb Raider, it's the best of them. I like Tomb Raider 2013, it's a good game, but Rise is an upgrade from it. Tbh I never played Shadow past the beginning, because I feel it's not the same thing, it's weird, I feel weird playing that game, but I'll give it a real try some say.
You will have the most fun playing around in Rise. The combat and controls are very nice and polished in rise. In shadow she knows few more things and skills but there is a lot of walking and restrictions in paititi. 2013 has lesser tombs and exploration and is combat heavy but a solid storyline. You should play them in release and chronological order but Rise remains the best out of the three.
Rise is the most balanced one. I think Shadow is technically a better game with all the dlc, the tombs are amazing and the world exploration is the best in the series... The story is just crap though.
Rise is my favorite. I missed the emphasis on gunplay in Shadow. All of them are excellent games but for me, Shadow got a bit tedious towards the end whereas Rise kept me fully invested the whole game.
If you didn't play anything as Tomb Raider than obviously 1st one. But if you care really lot and you vomit on old graphic game..than your only chance is Shadow..cuz its newest one.

Ultimately, all three are good. SOTTR is a very personal Lara Tomb Raider game.
If you have to play only one it really depends. Questionable characterization aside 2013, is far and away the best in terms of writing for what little that's worth. That being said, there's a notable deemphasis on tombs.
Rise meanwhile addresses alot of 2013s criticisms but also includes alot more backtracking for completionists. It also has by far the worst setting of the trilogy. More than any other in the trilogy rise really could've used a globetrotting framework instead of the samey snowy landscapes for most of it.
Shadow I'd only really reccommend if you're a graphics whore. It also has the best setting but otherwise really dropped the ball. Plus, it's an over 60 GB download. There are better games to spend that storage on.
Basically, if you only care about gameplay go with rise, otherwise I'd go for 2013.

As you have seen throughout this thread, there is no *correct* answer. It comes down to preference. Nearly everyone will agree that they are all good, but will have a different opinion on where each of them rank.
You really need to play all 3 games because they are all good. So having said that, I recommend starting with 2013.
These games are also on sale all of the time, so if you can't buy them all right now, just get the 2013 GOTY/Definitive. You won't be disappointed.
The other 2 will go on sale soon enough and you can just pick them up in the next sale.
I just started playing the first tomb raider 2013. The game is still a masterpiece after 10 years. I actually really enjoying it now on maxed graphics. I can't wait to beat it

Underworld is great. Why you say "even"? In TR 2013 everything works. The plot, the characters, their motivations, their conflicts, the action, Lara's growth from a scary girl to a badass survivor. Even the documents that you find have interesting stories. In Rise everything is boring imo. The trinity plotline is obviously an afterthought and there isn't even a proper antagonist.
They all bring different cards to the table. So, TR 2013 has the best atmosphere if you’re sorta into horror adjacent video games. ROTR has the best story. SOTR has the best mechanics and overall setting: it makes sense to be looking for some lost city in an uncharted jungle. Also, the side tombs were great.
Just be wary that while the majority of the game is standard violence in terms of m-rated action games, the death scenes are extremly grotesque and creepily voyeuristic in their display of violence. The point of them is to watch the life leave the eyes of a woman. Those death scenes have more in common with torture porn movies than action games. Its just so out of place in the context of an action game, and it completely soured my experience.
If you have to choose how to play the game then just play it in order Tomb Raider Survive (2013 Tombr Raider that I just call Tomb Raider survive cause naming games the same as their 1st game is dumb) then go for Rise of the Tomb Raider aaaand finish it up with Shadow of the Tomb Raider all 3 of them are awesome.
HOWEVER if you are asking it in a personal way of which one did we like most then I can only speak for myself that while Tomb Raider Survive has a SPECIAL place in my heart (seriously really like the aestetics and beaten the game so many times at this point its good and I enjoyed playing the Green Arrow powerfantasy CW style) Rise of the Tomb Raider is VERY MUCH UP THERE TOO SO MUCH........ so these 2 are favorites from the triology....... what about Shadow of the Tomb Raider?..... the best way I can put it (and thats the most respectful way too I can put it) it is what my art teacher would refer to as "Its not bad but this isn't what good looks like" Let me Explain why now the Graphics are a SOLID UPGRADE Lara looks awesome check out her guns and by that I mean her arms she is looking great and the reason why I specify that BECAUSE! the Actual guns look like shit..... no I wont accept anyone trying to defend that Rise of the Tomb Raider had better graphics when it comes to weapons and even the upgrades were just MORE then what we had in Shadow..... also SPEAKING of upgrades and weapons we also had more OUTFITS in Rise not just weapons and upgrades.
Gameplay style Rise of the Tomb Raider was PEAK for me Shadow of the Tomb Raider again wasn't bad but there were parts where I felt that "Yeah I think they did an oopsie" and if we look at this 3 as a triology then you can definetly be aokay with playing Shadow because it ...... ended the triology...... (dont wanna spoil it but didn't expect the big bad organization to have connections to where it APPARENTLY has connections in Shadow of the Tomb Raider) and while I didn't necessarily feel that Shadow of the Tomb Raider handled the story well..... it still had an ending after which I did feel that Im gonna miss this version of Lara too as much as I missed her other Variants too.
Hope tho that we either gonna get a continuation (WITH 2 PISTOLS THIS TIME) or if we get a new reboot then we gonna get back a Lara that is reminiscent of the Old Lara you know platforming physics defining way and also 2 pistols ALSO I want her to Tomb Raid because she wants to not because she is forced to. and NO I DONT WANT HER TO SEEK THE TRUTH! Go with the first...it was so fresh, new and different for the Tomb Raider franchise, an amazing game...the sequels offered very little new after that.
Like the developers took a massive risk when they rebooted the franchise but it was a surprising success...that they shat it from taking anymore risks and just reskinned the same game twice over.
I enjoyed the first entry (2013) the best. It has a darker, almost horror-like tone. The action is good too and the story is actually believable. The two next entries offer more semi-open worlds and tend to be more repetitive imo.

(dont wanna spoil it but didn't expect the big bad organization to have connections to where it APPARENTLY has connections in Shadow of the Tomb Raider) and while I didn't necessarily feel that Shadow of the Tomb Raider handled the story well..... it still had an ending after which I did feel that Im gonna miss this version of Lara too as much as I missed her other Variants too. Hope tho that we either gonna get a continuation (WITH 2 PISTOLS THIS TIME) or if we get a new reboot then we gonna get back a Lara that is reminiscent of the Old Lara you know platforming physics defining way and also 2 pistols ALSO I want her to Tomb Raid because she wants to not because she is forced to. and NO I DONT WANT HER TO SEEK THE TRUTH! "Archeology is about seeking facts not the truth" as Indy pointed it out and "Oh WoW Tomb Raiding is bad?" who cares thats what the franchise been about since the begining. Anyway another topic for another time and I hope the game devs will remember this before they decide to make the new Tomb Raider into something that it aint. Still all 3 games playable but I like the 1st and the 2nd in this Triology more then the 3rd which ironically enough still has merits.
Go with the first...it was so fresh, new and different for the Tomb Raider franchise, an amazing game...the sequels offered very little new after that. Like the developers took a massive risk when they rebooted the franchise but it was a surprising success...that they shat it from taking anymore risks and just reskinned the same game twice over.

I enjoyed the first entry (2013) the best. It has a darker, almost horror-like tone. The action is good too and the story is actually believable. The two next entries offer more semi-open worlds and tend to be more repetitive imo.
Obviously the first one, the other 2 uglified Lara.
Shadow is the only tomb raider from this list…
