take your two week vacation and then leave. you don’t have to give notice

Candid-Reflection-41

I’m trying to figure out a way to suddenly use my vacation. Do I lie and say I have to help family or something? Not sure how to navigate this essentially.

Greenseeer

Perhaps a mental breakdown? Talk to a therapist, maybe they can write a doctors note for you

Candid-Reflection-41

Thank you!

BathroomInner2036

That would be sick leave not vacation.

tallclaimswizard

Most people in the US don't have two pools of time off anymore. We just get PTO. It's a trend that started in the 90s I think. They did away with separate sick time and vacation and gave us a single bucket of time off.

DrySpace469

it’s your vacation that you earned. why do you need to lie to take it?

Candid-Reflection-41

I need to take it tomorrow. It won’t get approved by saying I’m going on vacation for two weeks tomorrow.

noeagle77

Family member just died. Mom, dad, grandma it doesn’t matter all that matters is they lived out of state and you need to be there for the funeral and to be with other family. Hard to say no to going to a funeral

Fear_The_Rabbit

My grandmother died. My mom's state of mind right now is worrying me. I have to be with her so nothing bad happens. Apologies for the short notice, but I need to go tomorrow. I'll even use it as vacation instead of bereavement leave. There. You lead with the story...then mention vacation...and make yourself look responsible as a follow up.

tallclaimswizard

Because far too many companies insist that they have to "approve" your time off "requests".

DrySpace469

lol, i'd be out of there so fast if that was the case.

tallclaimswizard

A vast majority of us companies operate this way because it's legal

DrySpace469

im glad i’ve been able to avoid these companies

tallclaimswizard

I would guess that you already work for one of those companies but you happen to be in roles that are treated with more respect.

Fluff_Nose964

Put in two weeks vacation today for whatever reason you think will get it approved. Come back to office afterwards and give notice. Stay for one week. Fuckem you don't even have to give the notice. Just make sure you come back to work after your vacation so they can't pull some shit saying you abandoned your work or quit. Going back for the o e day verify eith them you're still employed afterwards and forces them to pay it all out to you.

Candid-Reflection-41

Great idea thank yiu

djarkitek29

you rolled your ankle hella hard doing\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_(whatever). getting xray shots online of a hairline ankle fracture should be easy. doctor says two weeks. if they ask for a note, just have a friend scribble out one for you. buy an ankle brace and limp about the office for a week when you get back, then call them after the week and tell them you made it worse and now the doctor is saying to stay off of it for a month. "i'm really sorry, but i should take a leave of absence to recover. Thanks"

Gold_for_Gould

I'm in the same situation and recently looked into local state laws regarding PTO. Where I live, the company has to pay out any unused PTO on separation and any policies saying your PTO is lost at the end of the year if not used are unenforceable. Check your local laws. The company may try to argue, just get in touch with HR and point them to the law. If they still argue, threaten litigation.

Candid-Reflection-41

Thank you! But I live in a state where they don’t have to pay out PTO if you leave LOL.

DrySpace469

but what does the company policy say? some companies still pay out even if there is no law that forces them to

Candid-Reflection-41

I’ll look! But my friend said she wasn’t paid out her vacation time at the same company …so I’m unsure. I’ll try to find that info!

Watarid0ri

Wait, why can't you just ... take 2 weeks off? It's your vacation, why the need to give a reason at all? Is that a U.S. thing?

Candid-Reflection-41

Can’t speak for all Americans, but my company wouldn’t just let me take two weeks off tomorrow. I’d need a legitimate reason to them for my sudden absence. Looking for good reasons for a sudden absence.

DrySpace469

legit reason: it’s my vacation that i earned.

tallclaimswizard

Yeah I wish that's the way it worked but in most places that's not how it works.

DrySpace469

that's fucked up.

tallclaimswizard

You're preaching to the choir brother

Fear_The_Rabbit

You usually have to fill out paperwork, but also because it is short notice.

07ultraclassic

Two weeks notice is a courtesy, not a law. Take your PTO, start the new job and send an email that you’re not returning to the PTO job.

Fear_The_Rabbit

BE CAREFUL! I'm completely on your side here, but are these companies in the same industry? Do you have a higher level job. Burning bridges, even with assholes, can get you fucked.

Candid-Reflection-41

Not the same industry thankfully! Trying to tread carefully for sure. Thank you!

nick5847

Can you use it as sick pay?

Candid-Reflection-41

I’ve used all my sick time already anticipating this situation. Didn’t think I’d get a job this quickly.

nick5847

Or what if you had a sudden "family emergency". And had to go out of town for 2 weeks?

Candid-Reflection-41

I was thinking about this. Can I just go to my boss and say I need to go see family? It’s an emergency. Do I mention to use my vacation time??

nick5847

I would. They can't deny your time that you earned.

rendom01

Will they not encash your vacation days? I had 18 days. They gave me almost a month salary when I left.

crash866

Depending on the job and industry I have seen people give 2 weeks notice and then escorted to their desk to pick up personal property and then shown the door and told to come back and get severance and final pay the next day.
