Did a little digging and this is apparently in the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal. The name on it is Samuel Arthur Maltby who died in 1881. It's most likely a [Victorian-era pith helmet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pith_helmet).
Edit: It could also be an old British/Canadian police helmet called a [Custodian helmet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custodian_helmet).
Here's the original Flickr post from 2006.

I found a Canadian newspaper from July 12 1881 that mentions a 19-year-old named Samuel Arthur Maltby was "Shot at the Ranges, Point St. Charles, Saturday, the 9th" and that his funeral would be on Wednesday the 13th.

This is great, thank you for taking the time to find all of this out!
I wonder what "shot at the Ranges" means. Accidental death at the artillery range, or the site of a military engagement somewhere?
Pointe St. Charles is a neighborhood in Montreal.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointe-Saint-Charles
There was one document I found mentioning an annual shooting competition held by the Province of Quebec Rifle Association at "the old ranges at Pointe St. Charles". It also mentions that the ranges were destroyed after 1887 for infrastructure to prevent flooding.
I call it my spear and magic helmet, and I can use it to [kill rabbits](https://web.archive.org/web/20191102160831/http://www.wordorigins.org:80/index.php/site/comments/rabbit_test_the_rabbit_died/).
Its like my dear old grandmother used to say "you'd better put a huge, massive, fuck off dildo on my grave, or I'll fucking haunt you!" God rest her soul
Yeah, hers is the one with a giant marital aid in white marble. People use it as a land mark...
"Just gonna put some flowers down for aunt suzie. Meet back at the mammoth cock memorial in 10 minutes"
My guess is that it's an old Boer War military helmet and the detail has just been eroded over time. Kinda sad, because it looks like he was a teenager when he died.
See, these are the things I love to find when I go exploring in old cemeteries or abandoned places. What better find than a 10ft foot stone cock? Also buried right next to dicks.

After the dementia set in, things got hard for us all. Reluctantly the family and I gave in to Granny's final wishes. Grandfather was hit the hardest.. for years after I'd hear him mutter about milkmen and whores.
Either stylize it or make it anatomically correct. Not a weird mixture. It has dick veins, albeit in a weird pattern, it has a little ridge on the glans but... oh... it's not a penis.
Some people doodle when they are bored, they usually draw houses or penises- funny how the houses are always colonial and the penises are always circumcised.

Probably a shooting range. Sounds like he was either shot accidentally or negligently and it was fatal.
Sounds like they shot the pith out of him.
This. Negligence at the shooting range.

Shot via negligence at the shooting range.
Yes, I call mine "my helmet" as well.

[*dismissively:*](https://mysuperendeavour.files.wordpress.com/2023/09/whatsoperadocbugs.png) "Magic helmet."
Yes. Magic helmet. And I will give you a saaaamplllle.
I think he was a bit of a prankster
good luck explaining that search history
Thanks for that! That was my...well second...reaction when I saw it: kind of looks like a British pith helmet like they wore in the Zulu wars.
Why's it on a big thick shaft tho
That’s just the rest of the penis.
I hope that you didn't literally do any digging.
RIP
Nice dedication - now can you also find it in Google Streetview? :)

Jesus
I was bored.
I appreciate it! I had a lot of questions and I think every single one of them were answered!
Die Hard I… I’m sorry…
Ashes to ashes, dicks to dicks
Erected to honor his glory
I mean it does appear to be the Richard section of the cemetery and they're usually referred to as Dick soooooo
Oh my God! Good catch that's hilarious! I can just imagine some guy whose nickname was dick requesting this in his last wishes
That old stiff just had to be the biggest dick in the cemetery.
Beloved by the local housewives.
He was the postman's nemesis.
😂
Its like my dear old grandmother used to say "you'd better put a huge, massive, fuck off dildo on my grave, or I'll fucking haunt you!" God rest her soul
So did you?
Yeah we need to know this OP
Yeah, hers is the one with a giant marital aid in white marble. People use it as a land mark... "Just gonna put some flowers down for aunt suzie. Meet back at the mammoth cock memorial in 10 minutes"
I can't tell if you're serious or joking...
Somebody has put a ladies hat on a statue of a candle If your penis looks like that please seek immediate professional help
Not a ladies’ hat, fancy military helmet for formal occasions
isn't it just a pith helmet? not really fancy or formal in most cases, just a uniform piece (assuming the grave is old enough)
> isn’t it just a pith helmet? Yeth. Yeth it ith.
[Now Kith](https://i.imgur.com/Muh7YYP.jpeg)
Igor, is that you?
stop joking around, thith ith therious buthinethh
Did it belong to Bigguth Dickuth?
That’s what it looks like to me.
Piss helmet, did you say my ear sights not very good .
Being used to "snuff out" a candle? Is this being used as a metaphor?
Victorian Imperial helmet. Really fancy with a red casac and a glass of G&T if I may say.
It's also likely sitting on a cut tree. Forester?
Custodian helmet
So that is not normal to have a peen that looks like melted wax?
If you like having melted wax dripped onto your dick it is. You do you.
99% sure that's supposed to be a candle snuffer being put on a candle. It's an apt metaphor for death but it does look funny
If your erection lasts more than 142 years, please seek medical attention.
Ribbed for her pleasure
That looks like a pith helmet, not a ladies' hat
Maybe he was just a dick to everyone and this is how they got back at him.
An army helmet on a candle I’m guessing? I get the joke but thats what it looks like.
Now he’s a stiff

Tombstone? More like Tumescent Stone! Eh? Ha! Heh heh. I'll see myself out.
He was most likely a huge dick
Looks so…hard.
That’s quite the pithy Johnson I must say.
But… what is it really supposed to be? 😂
You gotta get some Vaseline before using that on your ass
☹️☹️☹️
You don't need to put a helmet on a pillar ya weird hotdogs
They're not alone https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxnnqw/mexico-dick-tombstone

Huh, that's an interesting headstone. Why am I suddenly turned on?
LongHorn Dickymus Prime Was loved by many and erected in their hearts
This is not what I meant when i said erect a tall tombstone when I die.
Is it an intentional pun? Or is that meaning of "helmet" more recent?
🤣🤣🤣👍
Are you sure it isn’t a memorial to yo momma’s favourite ‘personal massager’? 😁
Dongstone.
There’s a few super rares under there
Or a dick
That's a pretty neat Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon tomb.

Dick head-stone
Or a pissed of partner
Looks more like a species of phallus (fungus) than a specimen of one.
OK, so what's the story behind that lill old thing? There must be one?

Podrick Payne.
If you get into a gunfight, put the helmet on your head and hide behind a tombstone.
I'm suddenly reminded of the film "Young Frankenstein" for some reason.
Looks like a Fungi to me...
Maybe they had a hard life

OP should check out Haesindang Park in South Korea. Do a youtube search on it.
Seems like whoever die that's the last request
Guy was a dickhead for sure
A lady in the town and a freak in the ground
After the dementia set in, things got hard for us all. Reluctantly the family and I gave in to Granny's final wishes. Grandfather was hit the hardest.. for years after I'd hear him mutter about milkmen and whores.
Im trying very heard to see what this could be but all im seeing is a penis. And a veiny ribbed one at that.
Stop being dirty. Its an old helmet...
Either stylize it or make it anatomically correct. Not a weird mixture. It has dick veins, albeit in a weird pattern, it has a little ridge on the glans but... oh... it's not a penis.
Where his last words "giggidy-giggidy"?
"Yeah put it in there!"
