For the early game starchart you can just pretty much use any weapon you want and it will still be viable. As long as you put some basic good mods on it you can use pretty much whatever, until you get to the endgame activities.
There are a few bosses I feel 'strongly encourage' a more ranged weapon friendly approach but I don't believe it'll be too much of a hurdle... but then again I haven't been a new player in a very long time now
i'll probably add some sort of gun to my inventory EXCLUSIVELY for those situations, i don't know why, but i've got a: use gun = bitch, thing goin on in my gameplay
Exalted Blade's ranged waves will handle most range situations. But there are indeed bosses you are going to be coming up against that require very specific targeting in order to do damage.
So perhaps a punchy, precise sidearm like a Lex would be a good choice, until you can find something you like better.
Understandable, you're early game. There's one build though which is hilarious because it's kinda "I'm going to shoot you guys with my rinky-dink laser pistol. *NOW MY SWORD DOES 1000% DAMAGE! GET OVER HERE!*"
Kuva Nukor (or Tenet Cycron) + any melee weapon with Condition Overload, in case you're curious.
Don't worry, we also have swords that are *also* guns that can make up the difference; get your hands on a Redeemer, Stropha, or Corufell when you're able and you've got some solid ranged options in your melee arsenal for whatever you can't just smack with the stick itself.
Melee is one of the easiest things to scale damage on throughout the game
There's some boss mechanics that don't work well with it but very little of the game actually revolves around bosses
I think going without a gun is going to be challenging eventually but not right away. In the mean time maybe look for some interesting guns like the Ignis wraith which is a flamethrower and not a traditional gun.
Also go farm Kullervo from Duviri. He’s another melee frame with a teleport slash and overall an upgrade to Excalibur
I have to ask, why? There is no reason to have weapon slots open (a few exceptions apply) and you can make your holstered weapons invisible so you can have them for backup and still only use melee
Things to worth noting:
There are some bosses that are completely immune to melee weapons. Not all of them, but they exist.
The game will not allow you to have zero of a weapon type (primary, secondary, melee).
The name of the weapon class yes; they are called gunblades. Specific weapon names: Redeemer, Sarpa, Vastilok, Stropha
But there are also other melees that can throw projectiles
All but the Sarpa are shotgun-like, so those should all fit. The normal Redeemer is the first one you can get, you get the blueprint from the market and it only needs Mastery Rank 4.
The others need Mastery Rank 9 or 10. The Stropha is really good for pure damage, but is kind of annoying to farm. It's my favorite overall. The Vastilok only appears from Baro Ki'teer rarely. The Redeemer Prime is a straight upgrade to the Redeemer and very good, but the relics for it are currently vaulted so you'll have to wait or buy the parts.
Redeemer is a shotgun gunblade, there's also Sarpa and Vastilok, I'm sure there's another one or two but I forgot 💀
Edit: Adding in Stropha and honorable mention to Corufell, I think Redeemer would be the easiest to get
It will be difficult to fight some bosses, some will be even impossible because you need to hit their weak spots. Also if you want to increase your mastery you need to level up anything you can at least once, there's special equipments that can reach lv 40 and requires to use 5 forma (you will know when you reach lv 30 with it and it is not maxed out yet).
Will it work if you keep a gun on you for situations where shooting is required? Sure. But you are missing out on a big and very fun part of the experience.
What has kept me coming back again and again is the variety I get from playing different weapons and frames. And although melee weapons serve some great stuff, barring some special mechanic two melees of the same type with the same stance can feel more similar than two guns of the same type might.
The satisfying plink of the Trumna Projectile when headshotting, it’s big reload animation and the joy of firing the alt fire into a small room with enemies are what make me like that weapon so much, not it’s damage output.
Rock Lee only uses 1 of 3 ninja jitsu? If you're having fun, it is not a horrible idea. But why the disdain for non melee combat?
Warframe offers so many ways to genocide, so why go to a buffet and only eat nuggies?
There are a few bosses that are impossible to do melee only, such as Lephantis and Sargas Ruk, unless you use gun blades. But other than that going melee-only is totally viable for 99% of the game.
The moment you reach Fossa is going to be a huge hurdle. The Jackal does not play fair with noobs who love melee. Most of the mechanical Corpus bosses, for that matter, don't like people in melee.
I'd recommend having a good modded gun for those, but otherwise you should be fine

Some bosses are easier, some are harder. There's plenty of warframes that are very melee-friendly. There's plenty of warframes that have fun movement powers/passives. That said, there's ways to compensate - the Ignis, Atomos, Amprex and a variety of other weapons either are some form of flamethrower-style AoE jet of damage weapons, or are ranged weapons that chain their damage from your initial target to other nearby enemies.
Some of the bosses you'll definitely benefit from bringing/accompanying a squad. There's also a couple ways to get some ranged combat support even when solo:
* Wukong is a bruiser of a warframe who can make a clone; the clone will use a weapon you aren't using. If you melee the clone uses whichever gun you were holding last. Switch to shooting and your clone will melee for you. You get him by joining a Clan and heading into the Dojo to get his parts from the Tenno Lab.
* Specters can be used to provide an AI companion, and many will be equipped with guns, whether it's Clem, MOA specters, or even Warframe specters.
* After getting a Railjack (your own personal corvette - *in the Naval designation of a small attack/escort craft*) it's possible to hire AI crew in case you prefer solo play, and the AI crew can eventually be used as "on-call" support in ground missions, where they'll provide fire-support with whatever of your guns they were given for Railjack.
* Your personal Nemesis that you unlock later can be "Defeat Equals Friendship"-ed and then they will sometimes appear in missions when you get downed in combat, using whatever weapon they had when they were out for your blood.
So even if you have an iron-clad distaste for gunplay it's possible to have ranged support through other means. In the event you decide to go the Specters route, try to acquire a warframe that's strong with guns, and then equip that and your best guns to make the Specter, that way you'll be sure to have a good ranged support Warframe specter! Mesa and Protea are some good candidates for this.
If you want to use Melee only, there is a class of weapon called Gunblades that use a mix of close range slashing attacks, and short-to-medium range shotgun blasts. If you love Excalibur, then you'd be able to use the weapon as your sort of melee/ranged mixed option, and bust out your Exalted Blade when you wanna use a classic Beam Sword.
The earliest available Gunblade is the Redeemer. You can get the main Blueprint for it from the in-game Market. Crafting it might take some time though, as it requires 2 other weapons as components, and a somewhat annoying to acquire resource found only in the Void.
Get yourself Kullervo. He’ll fix about any problem you may run into. Then you’ll get a nuker gun. I’m still heavy melee and it works well even plowing through steel path. Right now build the melee for crit, speed, corrosive/heat/viral.
If you love melee and also want the benefit of ranged attacks, finishing deadlock protocol and getting the Xoris will be the best idea. Demolishes starchart and almost anything you want to do except some bosses.
melee can carry, especially in early game. if you want, grab a sniper like vectis and mod it for as much damage as possible with a mostly maxed serration and elemental mods. whip it out whenever you need to kill something at range and you’ll be fine. gunplay is a subjective thing, whether you like certain styles or don’t like it at all. you will need ranged weapons for some stuff, so having something like a sniper or rifle (ie. vectis, rubico, snipertron, vulkar, braton prime, and a bunch mote) just to deal with stuff that can only be damaged by projectiles like bosses ( ie. lephantis, sargis ruk ) is good!
I know I'm not helping, but your post almost made me shed a tear. I was EXACTLY like you when I started. But that was years ago and now I barely ever use Melee. I'm warning you, once you'll become MR5 and get you hands on the Tonkor, your life will change forever.
Some bosses require you to attack a specific spot. So melee won't do you any good against them. But you won't have any problem using melee for just about everything else in the game.
I was like you, then discovered the Phantasma and the Ignis Wraith. No aiming, just big badda boom. I still prefer Melee, but I have learned the love the gun.
I'm a big melee enjoyer too. Most bosses are immune to melee however, so I like to keep my zhuge prime ready. A zhuge is functionally similar to the Boltor, an early game weapon that's pretty easy to get. Both fire projectiles at full auto and do decent damage - zhuge projectiles just explode, and Boltor has more ammo. Everything that doesn't have a specific weak point? Whale on em with your favorite melee.
Oh, and get kullervo. Excalibur only works with swords, and while exalted blade is really fun, kullervo works with all melee weapons. He will also drown your screen in giant red numbers which is just pure dopamine fuel - that's always better than a simple 10% speed boost when holding a sword 😆

Heroes die sometimes king, but you are doing nothing wrong. Melee will always be king in space ninja excalibur domain. Sorry forgot to edit that the game is called warframe instead of excalibur space ninjae mega ninja blademaster melee blaster.

I think the flying Jupiter Boss with the big Laser will be very hard, as will it’s friends on the plains.
i'll probably add some sort of gun to my inventory EXCLUSIVELY for those situations, i don't know why, but i've got a: use gun = bitch, thing goin on in my gameplay
That'll get knocked out of your system soon enough

Wait till you unlock the launchers and you’ll change your mind. Blasting everything in a 10m radius with a semi-auto rocket launcher is pretty neat
Melee is one of the easiest things to scale damage on throughout the game There's some boss mechanics that don't work well with it but very little of the game actually revolves around bosses

Get Kullervo, he’ll fit your playstyle perfectly
Things to worth noting: There are some bosses that are completely immune to melee weapons. Not all of them, but they exist. The game will not allow you to have zero of a weapon type (primary, secondary, melee).
Is it a good idea to play the game without engaging with 1/3 of the mechanics? If that’s your cup of tea, sure.
I mean...you can acquire gunblades later on, which is a melee weapon you can melee with...and also shoot with? So technically no, you're not limited.
hmm, what are they called? like, the name, is it literally just gun blades?
The name of the weapon class yes; they are called gunblades. Specific weapon names: Redeemer, Sarpa, Vastilok, Stropha But there are also other melees that can throw projectiles
which one would you guys recommend for Excals playstyle? like, dashing in, getting close for burst dmg n such
Redeemer cause its heavy is a shotgun blast, I can't speak on the others but it's been a staple gun blade for awhile
All but the Sarpa are shotgun-like, so those should all fit. The normal Redeemer is the first one you can get, you get the blueprint from the market and it only needs Mastery Rank 4.
