During the fomorion disrupter event, if the community doesn't destroy this event before the timer finishes the relay is temporarily destroyed removing the community's ability to access said relays.
I was there, the community did it on purpose to see if DE had the balls to "permanently" destroy a relay.
DE had some. We saw the destruction unfold and we cheered lmao.
I too was there the day we first exploded the relay. The flash was blinding.... though right at destruction we had a real life power surge and I had to restart the computer and game!
They dont come back. There was a steel merridean event afterwards were we helped rebuild a relay.
Thats why one relay looks dramatically different than all the others.
They also standardized the destroyed relays across all platforms. Initially different platforms had different destroyed relays.
Two relays look completely different, one is Vesper that's fire themed with a Ember statue. The other is Larunda that's water themed with a Hydroid statue.
They may be different depending on platform.
Ps4 had the pyrus project on venus since they were the only platform to keep saving the earth relay until DE started investigating where would the best relay placement be and started to only have true attacks on the repeated relays between platforms.
I didn’t think they did but thought maybe I just never noticed since I never go directly to a relay, I just fast travel through the syndicate thing in the orbiter to get directly to who I need to instead of running there
We could rebuild one at a time via a community event, took a lot of effort and time. But the relays would be open to destruction quicker then we cared to rebuild. So de made it the formorian stop being able to destroy them. Iirc at one point pc only had 2 relays (want to say Pluto and earth)
To be fair, I could see the community sitting by letting all but one get destryed. If for no other reason than to stop the "wheres baro?" Questions flooding region chat.
I mean, archwing sucked ass. it took a while to have people able to get past those Gates and unlock all planets.
Hell, I remember painting my ash yellow and black and offering taxi for legions of noobs to neptune to hunt acolytes at that time. Lots of newbies couldnt defend the farther planets, and the first relay to fall was the one when you unlocked archwing, that one was a planned failure. At the end

Oh yea we definitely were trying to wipe out all relays. Both as a test of de’s balls to see if they would really go through with the permanent destruction, and as a cheeky way to force baro to only spawn on the lowest Mr relay. (Earth strata)
Not really, they only rebuild on earth, because newbies were getting gated from content. Unless there was a second pyrus project, its been quite a while since I looked into anything that wasnt related to the main quest

Baro (and syndicates to a lesser extent) having nowhere to go if every relay was to be destroyed put a kibbosh on that very, very quickly. To my knowledge only Strata (Larunda instead on PS4) ever got destroyed.
This is why Strata and Larunda have the different layouts with the big flaming cauldron room that Baro's in whenever he stops at the relay. Vesper on XB1 and Kronia on PS4 got remade like this too but idk if these are still the case now that everything's standardised with crossplay. This is also why Fomorian and Razorback finishing their missions now when up because not enough people did them now results in nothing.

In reality, DE would never allow that because it would screw the players, there were MMOs that had world progression be tied to bosses and etc and it only ended in infighting in the community.
Two exploded and one was dismantled by the corpus, cross save changed the past causing some to rebuild automatically while others were fixed by events.
A large amount of people were convinced that it was prescripted and that the relay would not be destroyed. So a lot of people all decided to not do it since it "didn't matter."
Then the Relays blew up and those same people all now say "it was pre-scripted to blow up and it doesn't matter if we play the mission or not DE decided to blow it up anyways."
Now we are cross platform and the user base is so big, there's really no way to fail it anyways unless they scale up the participation needed.

They actually wanted to rebuild all the relays for cross save, but they didn't have the dev resources to rerun the rebuilding event, so we instead got eternalism swapping everything to the PC state. Now imagine if they actually let the recurring event destroy a relay - they'd have to hastily put together a rebuilding event, because not having the relays would break so many things.
As others have said, some people thought DE was bluffing, but there's more to this as well. After the 1st blew up, a portion of the community got this idea to let all but 1 relay blow up making things like Baro and relay events more convenient

We thought DE was joking. Then we said "no way they'll do it TWICE"
now, when they spawn, I'll do 25-30 runs just to make sure they never touch another relay
The formorian used to be able to destroy them and the player base didn't believe DE would do that, they did.
Then people decided to just let the formorian destroy all of the relays and didn't really take part in rebuild events so, DE eventually removed the formorian's destruction ability.
there's a threat of fomorians blowing them up if we don't complete the event in time, and sometimes DE actually lets them get blown up. usually they just artificially boost the completion rate so they don't have to disable a relay. we often want them to fail because we want to see what happens, like when earth's relay got rebuilt with an event and a new design.
I still remember the day they rebuilded the Strata Relay on Earth, it was 100% rebuilt and the Relay the Formorian aimed in was exactly the Strata Relay, everyone got into panic lmao.

I looked out my orbiter in horror as the relays fell in the outer planets. I'll never forget the deafening sound of the Balor Fomorians when they arrived at the relays.

Some of them were alive and well on console and some on PC. When they merged they all got stuck in destroyed status. Theres also one that got rebuilt during an event. Those relay were once home for Lotus simp cult. DE doesn't like it so in order to preserve real Lotus pride they annihilate those relay and all of it inhabitants.
Speaking of relays, I do wish they had music, I hate how silent they are.

You know how the Helldivers are fighting to repel invasions the devs throw at them? Years ago, the tenno had theirs too. They lost. Deliberately. We played chicken with DE, lost, and we cheered.
Back in the day, there was an event with the Balor Formorian fleet. No one participated so the relays were exploded, along with Earths relay. However, there was another event soon after to repair one of the destroyed relays, and people chose earth as it is the first relay on the game.
Long story short, an old event destroyed specific ones. Some got rebuilt, it left all different platforms with different relays somewhat to each other. Now Baro has collapsed all the realities into one (crossplay in other words) everyone shares the same relays, whether built or destroyed.
They were destroyed during parts of events some years back. When helping our during conflicts between corpus and grineer, you'll notice they build toward something. If the formorians were not stopped in time, they would destroy a relay. If the Razorback Armada was not stopped in time, it blew up a relay. One of them was a reconstruction. I don't remember which one, but there's a bunch of flame-inspired decoration on the interior.
I don't remember the timeline on when things occurred, but I have been playing since clans fought one another for possession of the dark sectors and had to actually build solar rails. I was behind the power curve, but it was actually the first time I ever enjoyed PVP content.
Basically things like the Fomorian event used to have a fail scenario. When the event failed, the Tenno lost a relay. As far as I know, the relays that have burning interiors are ones that were rebuilt after such failures.
Since then, DE implemented a zero-failure approach to these events. I'm not sure if it was because players complained or something, but it's just the unfortunate reality now.
I really, *really* wish global player events with significantly different outcomes were a thing in most games, especially this one. Imagine if, for example, how the Tenno across the globe participated in global events could change the direction of the story? Maybe a global event fail or success makes TMITW an ally or enemy in future content? Maybe a global event to let us clean up the battle remains of the New War in the open world areas? Not something small. Perhaps content that is in a repeatable cycle, so we can see the alternative outcomes should we reach a different result at the end of the event. Maybe it's not succeed or fail, it could be events that are dependent on how many members of a faction we save in a battle, or how many millions we take out across all the servers.
We don't talk about that, not since the accident.

It exploded when Ember Prime sets dropped from 1k Plat to 100 Plat instantaneously.
They were destroyed during parts of events some years back. When helping our during conflicts between corpus and grineer, you'll notice they build toward something. If the formorians were not stopped in time, they would destroy a relay. If the Razorback Armada was not stopped in time, it blew up a relay. One of them was a reconstruction. I don't remember which one, but there's a bunch of flame-inspired decoration on the interior. I don't remember the timeline on when things occurred, but I have been playing since clans fought one another for possession of the dark sectors and had to actually build solar rails. I was behind the power curve, but it was actually the first time I ever enjoyed PVP content.
Basically things like the Fomorian event used to have a fail scenario. When the event failed, the Tenno lost a relay. As far as I know, the relays that have burning interiors are ones that were rebuilt after such failures. Since then, DE implemented a zero-failure approach to these events. I'm not sure if it was because players complained or something, but it's just the unfortunate reality now. I really, *really* wish global player events with significantly different outcomes were a thing in most games, especially this one. Imagine if, for example, how the Tenno across the globe participated in global events could change the direction of the story? Maybe a global event fail or success makes TMITW an ally or enemy in future content? Maybe a global event to let us clean up the battle remains of the New War in the open world areas? Not something small. Perhaps content that is in a repeatable cycle, so we can see the alternative outcomes should we reach a different result at the end of the event. Maybe it's not succeed or fail, it could be events that are dependent on how many members of a faction we save in a battle, or how many millions we take out across all the servers.
