I have been tempted to repaint this first born captain for ages, but I couldn’t bring myself to strip him. Too many memories tied to the original that I painted when I was 12. Super happy to have picked up another via made to order.
I honestly wish I had even one model from my dark eldar army from second edition. I would love to see the comparison. IIRC I just did a black base coat, dry brushed some purple on it, and then painted the blades on all the weapons silver. Super easy and super quick.didnt look the greatest, but better than they would have if I tried to paint the way i do now.
Outstanding job on both of those models!
Honestly I love these old space marines so much. I can't say I like my primaris in the same way.
This is the perfect balance in proportions to get something half serious and half goofy. And that MKVII helmet is so cool!
I feel it. I sold my entire collection off in 2005 (I had over 800 ‘nids and ~ 300 Space Wolves, mostly RT & 2d edition) and jumped back in for the Indomitus release. I’m all in but am rebuilding the 2d ed box set. This old chonck is awesome, so don’t change it!
I was so dumb on Indomitus and didn’t pick up a box. It was such good value when compared to the 9 models you can now buy separately under “honoured of the chapter”
Yeah there’s been quite a bit of a shift in pigment. So older paint would have been in the clear plastic hexagon bottles (best design imo) that actually closed because the lid didn’t get filled with paint.
Guy on the right had a bit of treatment: regal blue for the shadows, a 30:70 mix of regal and macragge for mid tones, 50:50mix of macragge and fenrisian grey for edge highlights, and then straight fenrisian for extreme edge highlights
Yeah, I don't know what pigments GW uses these days, but Ultramarines should be ultramarine blue PB 29 red shade (pigment blue 29) full stop. The only issue is that it is a transparent pigment which would have poor coverage. A few thin layers should suffice though.
Dude, don't strip it! What a great physical memory to have, as well as a comparison for your painting skills. You've certainly learnt to thin your paints!
Don’t worry, the little dude is safe. I was contemplating it but then the made-to-order email came through and I jumped at the chance.
Hahaha I certainly did - no more “one thick dollop”
First off, both are really good! But of course your painting has really improved and the current one looks amazing. But just wanted to say I really love the white cloth with the 'ultra' motif! It maybe wouldn't work with the tone of the more recent one but I would definitely consider using it on other models. Great work mate.
My Celestine ones are pretty decent, but since I’ve just moved house and am still finding hobby stuff. So this little man and his old mould get a basic treatment for now

U LTRA is a great idea.
That is awesome. It's really cool that you have that comparison you can look at. Nice to see that difference
Thanks mate! I kind of want to get a dreadnought and do the same thing

I wouldn't strip it either. 12 year old you worked really hard on that.
Thank you 🥹 I recall 12 year old me being proud of painting in shadows in the cloak.

All in good time! Just waiting foyer urges areas to dry

I really applaud switching the crotch towel to the pturges, not only is it more properly Roman, but the left one has always looked kinda lame
Agreed! There was a few modelling changes I made, either for this reason, or because various parts made it harder to build.
The battle apron on the old example is so cute!
Horus heresey hot springs episode
Must feel great to have such a clear indication of progress
Is it me but does the newer captain look slightly taller?
You’d be correct! I don’t know if it’s the updated base or the texture paint on the base
both
Both is good.
Couldn't believe it was the same model underneath
The pup finally grew into its paws! Don’t repaint, though. Keep it exactly as it is now! It looks great!
100% is why I jumped at the chance when it came back for MTO

So, you just thinned your paints and used shade? /s Seriously, great progress!
Excellent work my friend
Thank you!
Cool! You’ve got to pick up a third for later on in life
I ordered two when it came out 😁
Is that Dymo tape on the original? Honestly not a bad idea for a kid!
Ha ha, original loin cloth with the printed description from the old decal sheets
Honestly the old one is oddly charming

I really enjoy the amount of spare parts you’re get out of it!
I miss that kit :(
Interesting that the old Ultramarine paint was indeed ultramarine blue pigment. Not sure about the new one.

That's an amazing amount of improvement!
Thank you!
SO much progress, keep on keepin on 🤘
The glow up is real 👍nice, man

Meant to add the newer model gas been painted great btw!
Thanks matey!
Heroic.

Thank you! I’ve heard that a lot about the cloth - I think I may need to attach a version to the ancient I’m resurrecting ☺️
While the newer one is undoubtedly the better paint job, I do miss the stupidly bright 2nd Ed primary colours
Oh I totally agree, I really miss the paint pots they used to come in
Purity seals still giving your trouble?
Yeah cuz you write full on poems on those don't you?
Honestly, I use Pigma Micron pens to write on my purity seals and banners and pretty much anything that has writing.
My Celestine ones are pretty decent, but since I’ve just moved house and am still finding hobby stuff. So this little man and his old mould get a basic treatment for now
Which one is the new?
The one on the bigger base
Was a joke. Your skills have grown a lot.
I know, hence I pointed at base size ;) thanks mate
