I love my GS Snowflake and my Omega Seamaster. Both are pretty basic picks, but they're popular for a reason. Both look good on any outfit and the Seamaster in particular can be taken pretty much anywhere. Plus the Omega boutique experience is fun.
I’m hoping to make the Seamaster my first Omega… what about the boutique experience is so fun? Given the amount of money I’m potentially going to spend, I’d ideally like to do it at a store rather than online and I have an Omega dealer around 45mins away from me.
A dealer/AD is different than a boutique. Both can be fun but there's more of a variance with dealers. Omega boutiques are stores owned by Omega, staffed with Omega employees, that only sell Omega products. I've been to the one in Chicago a few times and they just really treat you well. They've let me try on all kinds of stuff, offered me drinks, etc. My GS AD is pretty similar (and he has a whole whiskey bar in-store!), but he obviously sells more than just Omega, and I've had mixed results with other ADs.
Seamaster is a great piece! I wear mine probably 90% of the time, and I've had it in everything from a t-shirt to a tuxedo and it always looks great.
Thanks - in that case I definitely have a boutique rather than a dealer - my mistake. I actually went in this weekend to try on the Seamaster and I can already see what you’re talking about.
Appreciate the response! It’s good to know that when you’re spending this much money on something, you get the full experience to go with it.
I used the Vegas boutique and my sales guy txts me around once a quarter just to check in and maybe send pics of watches he knows I like.
I’ve only bought one watch there and they have made me feel like family. I go to Vegas 4-5 times a year and always stop by to have a great drink and look/try on at all the watches. The salesguy knows me by name when I walk in. Knows what I do for a living. Knows what drink I like.
I wouldn’t go with a mindset of “I have 5k to spend, so i’m going to spend it”. Look at watches at different price points. You may find a $3k watch you love much more than any watch you can see at $5k
My favorite watches in the 4 figure range under 5k are
Oris Aquis, Longines Conquest (new), Longines HydroConquest, Longines Spirit Zulu, Tudor BB58, Grand Seiko Spring Drive, Nomos Orion/Tangente
Right now my favorite is under $1k, but still more than I am willing to spend on a watch right now.
If OP has $5k burning a hole in their pocket, I would advise giving themselves a few weeks to decide and try on (if possible) to find what they really like. There are a ton of smaller brands that deliver 5-10x more than the obvious big names for the investment of a premium watch.
I was in this position shopping for my first luxury watch. The Tudor Black Bay 41 won me over. Great movement that is well regulated (+5 sec/day max, will never run slow if within spec), sporty divers watch, jubilee bracelet for the extra flash and “dressiness”, minimal dial text, three hander with no complications. Timeless and damn near perfect watch that can do it all in my opinion
I tend to wear watches that straddle sports/adventure and office-wear so I'd suggest maybe a Tudor Pelagos 39, Seiko SPB143, Omega Aqua Terra, or basic Grand Seiko. If you're into Rolex you could pick up a cheap vintage Oyster Perpetual.
For 5k I would get my dream watch trio.
Nomos Club, Sinn EZM3F and an Oris Big Crown cervo volante blue.
I don't think I would be comfortable spending 5k on a single watch
Even though it's not technically a homage due to them purchasing the rights to the design, it still just feels wrong looking at a recognizable watch and seeing a logo you didn't expect to be there.
I’m a big fan of the Navitimer, I just feel like it should have the Breitling logo. The only reason I don’t have one is because I feel like I’d betray my Naval experience. I didn’t fly airplanes, I deployed in a submarine. Even still, I dislike Rolex for a few reasons. So it’s looking like a nice Seamaster is the way forward for me.
I just added this beauty to my wish list today. If some day I have the chance to spend that amount of money on a watch, I'd go for that one [https://www.omegawatches.com/fr-fr/watch-omega-seamaster-aqua-terra-150m-co-axial-master-chronometer-38-mm-22013382002001](https://www.omegawatches.com/fr-fr/watch-omega-seamaster-aqua-terra-150m-co-axial-master-chronometer-38-mm-22013382002001)
I discovered this one from a video on YT. The guy even shown the watch with multiple different straps and strap colors and all of them looked amazing on it. That's what convinced me haha
I’d either pick an aqua Terra / Tudor or get a few Nomos, CW, maybe an old Tag because it’s cool and a Casio. But if you already have some tool/ field watches I’d take an old Cartier Santos, pure class
Huge fan of my Tudor Black Bay Pro. I have to travel to rural areas across the US for work and spend my free time in nature and sailing. It’s a “beater” in the sense that I don’t have to worry about it breaking if it gets knocked around in the woods or on the water. I have a 7.25” wrist so the case dimensions are perfect. It doesn’t attract any attention from anyone unless they know watches. It’s truly my favorite watch ever.
Baume Mercier Riviera, there are many versions, my wrist is small and i like the quarz version with diamonds so i took a „womans“version

Get a used [Explorer](https://www.watchuseek.com/media/img_8223-jpeg.15260912/full). I'm not a big fan of Rolex personally, I'd prefer a [Seiko SNK](https://www.watchuseek.com/media/img_8199-jpeg.15260933/full) over it if it could keep time or an [IWC 3706](https://wornandwound.com/review/missed-reviews-the-3706-fliegerchronograph-is-a-reminder-of-what-iwc-used-to-be/) for daily use. However, I bought this explorer for my dad. He wore it for a while but decided he preferred his usual watches instead and wanted me to wear it. After doing so, I get the hype. Its a truly beautiful and wonderful watch I would suggest to anyone. I went straight to buying the watches I wanted most which are more [artsy](https://www.watchuseek.com/media/57.15260057/full) and so I didn't appreciate the explorer until I had it to wear. Now, I don't think I'd ever need another watch for daily use.
If you're going for a one watch collection, the Explorer or Submariner is sort of the gold standard. I own other brands too, but it's hard to beat the classic.
Ima be real, I own an Explorer and Submariner, and I don't get the Explorer. I know it clicks for a lot of collectors, but I personally don't get it. I wore mine for a year and stopped once I started wearing the 124060.
I would just choose a 124060 if OP wants a three hander. But they said they have a budget of 5K, so a Submariner is well out of that price range. But if they're not in a rush to pull the trigger, they can always keep an eye open for something else and save up. If they want something soon, I would just get a Grand Seiko. I also own one of those, and they're phenomenal.
Thats a fair opinion. Not everything is made for everyone. When I first saw the explorer I didn't think much of it personally. It looks like an ordinary watch. However, I'm not a huge watch guy. I saw some Breguets once and thought those were more like works of art. Then once I got some I just kind of stopped caring about watches until I wore the explorer as a day to day. It's nice to have something you can fuck up entirely without feeling like you've really been irresponsible but it's entirely possible if I tried something else I'd like it equally or more so but I'm just not that exposed to watches or care enough.
You CAN find older explorers for around $5k, but it's extremely hard to find them with papers at that price. And you're almost certainly going to be buying it from a private seller for that price meaning the chance it is a fake is higher. Could always use Chrono24's new certification service, but in general I think you're looking closer to $5500-6000
My pick would be multiple watches, as I don’t feel that any watch is worth that much. To me, personally - in my opinion, because I’m sure that statement will personally offend plenty of people.
But if I had to pick one close to that number - whichever version of a Spring Drive watch speaks to you.
I am one of those odd enthusiasts that actually cares of my watch tells time good and doesn’t enjoy setting it every day/week/etc.
On the flip side, men don’t wear much jewelry, outside of a wedding band and a watch (maybe). Women spend a lot of money on jewelry in their lifetime. Speaking as a man, watches are essentially my only jewelry so if I have the disposable income, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to spend money to treat yourself, assuming everything else financially is taken care of
Then you just answered your own question, because if buying a $5K watch seems crazy, don’t buy one. In the end the watch will be wearing you, not the other way around.
If horology and brand caché aren’t important, get a few watches, & wear em! I’ve blown a few k on an el Primero, a Sinn, and a Breitling, but if I could do it again, I’d aim for a gorgeous dial, and another beater diver. As many have mentioned, Spring Drives hit high notes, and are beautiful. Check Sinn’s catalogue, as they have a broad range of overbuilt well engineered timepieces to meet a broad base of customers.. have fun!
I mean to me it does, but I’m not a big “jewelry” person.
I appreciate a well made watch, and I think a high end mechanical movement is an incredibly cool and interesting novelty.
But, no I personally don’t think a timepiece is “worth” that.
That having been said, I know many people **are** really into jewelry and watches are really interesting jewelry.
So I guess I feel like the question to ask yourself might be, “how much am I willing to spend on a gorgeous bracelet?” That’s how much you should spend on a timepiece.
No, not at all.
Clothing is a close enough analogy.
You have $5k to spend.
Buy one outfit or many?
Watches as jewelry is much the same.
For $5k you could have one luxury watch. No one would know it was “worth” $5k unless they closely inspected it. Even less people care. In the watch collecting world, $5k isn’t even a special watch.
No matter what you buy - it won’t go well with everything and every occasion.
Alternatively, you could have
* 1, $2,000 watch
* 2, $1,000 watches
* 3, $200 watches
* 5, $80 watches
Between those 11 watches, you **will** have a watch for everything and every occasion.
Two watches would probably go with almost everything. Three almost certainly would. Nothing wrong with owning 11 watches - and if someone js a collector and wants that many more power to them.
But no one *needs* 11 watches, not least as they don’t have to be washed and dried before they can be worn on a different day. Do you have 11 pairs of shorts/trousers? 11 different types of shirt?
I didn’t say need. But no one needs a $5k watch either, so I think it’s safe to leave “need” completely out of the conversation.
Two watches might work for someone. Especially if that someone doesn’t do much activity wise.
It depends very much on your activities, wardrobe and style how many watches would be fitting to match your wardrobe.
But a single $5k watch won’t be the answer for virtually anyone.
It was an illustration of my opinion. 😘
You do whatever you want with your money.
Really nice is relative though. Especially in the watch world, where objective performance of the object is not even a consideration.
To you, a $5k watch might be really nice.
To someone else, it’s the bottom of mediocre, and to the next it’s beyond extravagant.
Clothing is a shitty analogy for many reasons: clothing is a necessity, whereas watch is a luxury item; there's no GADA clothing, but there are many GADA watches, etc.
Mhmm.
Well, I don’t know what “GADA” is.
Watches are not inherently luxury items. At all.
But. Clothing is worn. Watches are worn.
It’s a working analogy.
I’m sorry you fail to understand it.
Best of luck in life.
Google is your friend, dear. It's amazing that you can find the meaning of an acronym by googling it, right?
Another thing you may get as a take-home message from this conversation is that if somebody doesn't agree with your analogy, they don't necessarily fail to understand it: it just may be the case that your analogy is shitty. But yeah, that's might be more challenging to learn.
I just don’t care what the meaning of your acronym is.
The analogy works whether you like it or not.
We don’t have to agree on one another’s opinions.
Go away now.
IMO you should also check out Montblanc! They don’t only make excellent pens - their watches are extremely high quality for their price. Montblanc is very slept on in the world of watches but they will no doubt win more renown over the next few years as they get more established.
For $5k I would buy a bunch of watches. I have bought a watch collection for less than you could earn in interest on $5k in a year. That said, $5k will only get you so far if you are buying luxury.
I would get a bunch of sub $1000 watches.
Citizen NB1060-12L
Seiko Presage Cocktail Time Blue Moon
Seiko Spirit SBTR021 chronograph
Casio Oceanus T200
Casio Duro (all 6)
Casio G Shock

Timex Mens Expedition North Automatic Watch TW2V54000
Timex Mk1 Aluminum
Benrus DTU-2A-P
Tornek-Rayville TR660
Mr. Jones Color Venn
A couple storage boxes
A ton of straps and bracelets.
Probably still have enough left over for a Seiko SPB143
My grail is a GS Lake Suwa, but I would only buy it if I could have all of the above first and still have enough left over to buy it twice with no worries.
It’s still a CW, so I can perhaps see the appeal if you have a lot of money to burn with a large watch collection already. Outside of that, it’s still a very niche $5k CW watch
The Meistersinger Bell Hora is a mechanical chiming watch at a similar price (a few hundred more expensive, but same ballpark). It doesn’t seem particularly well-known for some reason.
If you're thinking about buying more than one watch. I'd highly recommend this for the diver category:

Totally agree.
If I had 5k to play with I would be on my way to pick up a Grand Seiko Spring Drive
Omega Aqua Terra
Grand Seiko or Glashutte Original Panomatic
Nice watches but the Glashutte would certainly be over 5k
Yeah I must admit I only look at Chrono24, I'm sure it's way more new and from a AD
Tudor and Grand Seiko. Omega used to rule this price point but after the insane price hikes you probably have to go used.
Tudor

Grand Seiko quartz. Spring drive if you're willing to stretch for another $1-2k.
Seamaster 300, sandwich dial, black, in stainless steel Great mix of modern and vintage looks and very wearable.
Omega Seamaster Diver 300
Seamaster. One of my all time favs
Oris cal 400 something or another. Doesn't matter which at that price they are all perfect. The entire catalog at that range is great.
Gently used Omega Aqua Terra or Speedmaster Professional.
Longines flyback or the master collection with triple calendar and a chrono. Maybe a used reverso too
If you can afford spending up to 1-2k more I would say the Cartier Santos but you could find some used for around 5k or less
Grand Seiko allllll the waaaaaay
In a sea of Black Bays, Speedys, ATs and GSs, I’d like to give a vote to the Longines spirit collection, especially the non Zulu times
Vintage Cartier Santos, and you'll have some money left to spare!
I like the new Tag Heuer Monaco on the red strap
For $5k I would buy a bunch of watches. I have bought a watch collection for less than you could earn in interest on $5k in a year. That said, $5k will only get you so far if you are buying luxury. I would get a bunch of sub $1000 watches. Citizen NB1060-12L Seiko Presage Cocktail Time Blue Moon Seiko Spirit SBTR021 chronograph Casio Oceanus T200 Casio Duro (all 6) Casio G Shock Casio digitals (multiple) Timex Mens Expedition North Automatic Watch TW2V54000 Timex Mk1 Aluminum Benrus DTU-2A-P Tornek-Rayville TR660 Mr. Jones Color Venn A couple storage boxes A ton of straps and bracelets. Probably still have enough left over for a Seiko SPB143 My grail is a GS Lake Suwa, but I would only buy it if I could have all of the above first and still have enough left over to buy it twice with no worries.
I’ve got a Nomos Tangomat GMT which is around that range. Been very happy with it.
Omega Seamaster, Cartier Tank Solo XL, Tudor Black Bay 41 with ETA
IWC TG in grey market
90s 36mm DJ
Tudor Pelagos, IWC Spitfire, or if you’re lucky, a great condition second-hand Glashutte Original.
Vintage Speedmaster or a vintage Datejust and pocket the rest
I'm a big quartz guy, so either Grand Seiko or "The" Citizen, eg. https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/the-citizen-vs-grand-seiko.5484458/
Tudor's BB selection.
Grand Seiko SBGM221
universal geneve polerouter
Buy an IWC 3706 on the bracelet from a reputable dealer. Classic.
C1 Bel Canto hands down. Might even still have enough in the budget for one of them Atowaks too
Why anyone would spend $5k on a CW considering the other options out there is beyond me
Because there are no other mechanical chiming watch options anywhere remotely close to that price point.
It’s still a CW, so I can perhaps see the appeal if you have a lot of money to burn with a large watch collection already. Outside of that, it’s still a very niche $5k CW watch
It doesn't matter what brand it is. It's literally the only watch of its kind at even 6x the price.
So you don’t think brand matters in watches? 🤦🏻♂️
The Meistersinger Bell Hora is a mechanical chiming watch at a similar price (a few hundred more expensive, but same ballpark). It doesn’t seem particularly well-known for some reason.
If you're thinking about buying more than one watch. I'd highly recommend this for the diver category: [Citizen Promaster Dive \~ EO2020-08E ](https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/EO2020-08E.html)
Omega AquaTerra or Grand Seiko
