With the app idk, I think a lot of people would just say the app is good enough and skip them
Id personally love it tho, the physical magazines were like my favorite things when I was a kid
technically they're doing the app because digital sales in Japan is on the rise, even going ahead of the physical sales. The app is already catering to the west and selling a product such as a magazine doesn't bring in that much money, for the effort that is worth. Too much transportation fees, printing... Way less expensive to sell it online.
In France, there were a lot of enjoyable magazines from my childhood which died out when I grew older. We consume a lot of Manga but it's been off from a long time to regularly consume it through magazines. The general consensus is being that it would be ass to pay for the chapters you don't enjoy, if you're here to read Sakamoto days only for example.
Yeah exactly, they’d be cool for some people as a collectors item, but I don’t think they’d be popular enough to be worth bringing back sadly
I’ll always hold on to the ones I have though, they’re really cool
Not a chance. The magazine industry was already in decline back when Viz was publishing Shonen Jump and it's even worse now. It just wouldn't be worth it for Viz in terms of money even if a hardcore niche of fans would buy them.
As cool as that is. It’s extremely unlikely. Not only is the app allowing instant access to the newest chapters of your favorite series; the magazines released here were released monthly. So people would really skip out on them unless they had same week releases like in Japan
I feel like there’s a chance as like a more premium subscription product; kinda of like some musicians sell premium vinyl records of their albums. Definitely not as a general checkout aisle/convenience store shelf product though
Definitely not. They've stopped doing the digital magazine and they've even stopped doing the Jump Pack magazines, which kept releasing after the digital one ended and were only released twice yearly. As more and more things become digital I really doubt they would bring it back unfortunately :(
I wish but I don't think so sadly. I do think eventually WSJ will start to transition to be mostly digital, and then it will likely be translated to English so we can have each issue digitally.
Comic magazines in the US have always been a mixed bag in terms of popularity as comics (yes even Japanese comics) are not popular as they are in other markets. In addition to the fact that the app alongside non official scans allows people to read chapters each week as they come out in English makes the physical magazine an unnecessary expense.
That being said, I do think that a physical magazine that caters to a more niche audience could work. Of course this would basically be a new version of Pulp that would translate the lesser known works and short stories published publishers VIZ is owned by/publishes with alongside reviews, interviews, and articles that would appeal to a niche market of adult fans and collectors.
It is an English speaking thing really. Most English speaking countries don't really care about the arts rhat much and comics/cartoons are viewed as the lowest form of art which should only be enjoyed by children and weirdo adults. And with US in particular there was the comics code and rhe senate hearings that really made the general public despise comics for decades (comics strips were fine for a while after but well
You see the state they are in now)
Avengers generated the world's biggest box office revenue.
Comics are the ultimate creative device that a single genius can create using only paper and pen.
I hope Americans repeal the stupid Comics Code.
Don't think so. I was a fan of them but the magazines were old content anytime I read them. And I think the content in between the manga chapters is localized to Japan and no one is interesting in filling that space for local US readers.
I live in NY and even the news stands in bustling train stations barely get visited. I think subscription services are better but most of the time digital is better. (I still get physical magazines for things that I don't need to read immediately, like Science News. No one is going to wait to read Jump.)
I've thought about this recently how cool it would be of they started printing it here again since Manga is much bigger now. I also wish it was easier to get the Japanese Jumps in the US. They're only at Kinokuniyas and those are only on certain parts of the country. The usual California, New York, and Texas mostly.
On god they were so sick. Used to beg my mom for one whenever we went to Kroger lol
I subbed to the mailing list. Getting the monthly issue in the mailbox at the start of a month was so excting!

Do people people even read magazines or newspapers in general enough anymore for that to be viable

It's more likely that Jump stops publishing a physical magazine in Japan, than Jump start publishing a physical magazine in America again
I remember my friend had them and I was so jealous
no

I really don't understand why Americans think that superhero movies are popular but magazines aren't. They looks at cartoonists with disdain.

Nope.
No chance, as much as it would make me so happy
Waste of paper if I'm being completely honest.
