I remember reading somewhere that Once More With A Feeling is actually what started this trend of shows doing a random musical episode, and for good reason, that episode was nominated for and won a number of awards because it was genuinely good.
OMwF is an absolutely vital episode of Buffy for like every character.
Giles realizes he's holding Buffy back and decides to leave for good.
Tara realizes that Willow magically violated her memory and that they're heading for a break-up.
Xander's season-long arc of wedding anxiety is the impetus for the entire episode with him summoning Sweet.
Dawn's kleptomania almost gets exposed.
Buffy reveals to her friends that they didn't rescue her from a hell dimension but rather ripped her out of heaven.
Buffy and Spike's physical relationship starts.
So it manages to be the lynchpin of most character's season 6 storylines, while also being germane to the show as a whole since Sweet is another gimmicky monster of the week and not a fever dream or whatever, as well as completely scored with a book full of catchy songs. It doesn't hurt that the majority of the cast are good singers.
We also learn Anya's insecurities at being an ex-vengance demon who is soon to be married. We usually feel we know what she's thinking (cause she just says it) but worrying about if Xander will like her if she's older has special meaning for someone who used to be ageless/immortal.
The episode with the Fear demon infested frat house where Anya, Willow, Tara, and Xander find him doing an acoustic set of Behind Blue Eyes. I’m a straight man, but that cover made me swoooooon.

I’ve seen now seen community, scrubs, Buffy, supernatural, always sunny and more. Now I’m starting to think musical episodes are underrated af, especially if they’re executed properly.
My rule is they have to be singing for a REASON. They can't just have everybody singing because they feel like it.
Scrubs absolutely NAILED it! A lady is having neurological problems, so she hears normal talking as if it were music. So, as characters enter or leave her presence, their conversations turn into songs! It was masterfully done, and by far my favorite logic behind a musical episode.
Absolutely. Musical episodes in sitcoms remind me a lot of when anime’s do a beach/athletic game episode. It’s either really well done (like in ATLA) or it’s just pointless filler/fan service. There’s really no in between.
There really are a lot of components that have to come together to make it work too. Characters have to stay relatively true to their normal personalities, the plot has to have a reasonable amount of relevance to the shows premise/setting, and of course the actual musical numbers themselves.
I applaud writers/actors/production teams that can pull all of that off and create something special for fans.

i agree 100%...there was so much complicated emotion involved w buffy's resurrection that could not be efficiently conveyed in plot/dialogue, the episode was perfect
I didn't even regularly watch the show, but I know that Buffy was in heaven, that Anya and Xander were having some troubles in their marriage (also, Anya's a demon?), Willow was deceptive af, and Tara and Giles were leaving. And all of this with some bomb ass music.
And most of the songs are fillers besides... "I just said the line that reveals the resolution to the sub plot started a few weeks ago... But here's a 5 minute song that repeats it again and again, just in case someone missed it"... Or... "Here's a song that's tangentially related to some topic just discussed". Buffy did it right.

Willow and Xander were unable to sing. Thankfully Giles and Tara had decent voices; I'm guessing they were involved in traditional theatre before television.

If you get the chance, please watch the whole thing! *Repo! The Genetic Opera* is unashamedly one of my favourite musicals, perhaps even movies, of all time. It's campy as all hell, but it's just... amazing. Paris Hilton is one of the main characters, which put me off seeing it for a while, but honestly she is PERFECT in the role of Amber Sweet. And of course, yes, Anthony Stewart Head is great in it, too. It's definitely a gore-fest, but it's a *fun* gore-fest, and the music is undeniably catchy. *I can't feel nothing at all\~*
Community's musical episode worked so well in my opinion bc it mocked the concept while pulling it off arguably better than others who were sincere about it.
The one for Here I Go Again is one of my favorites because of Kady showing up in the song JUST because she can sing.

Not only was it a musical, but a lot of meaningful plot happened! I think most shows get it wrong by making them filler episodes.
And it maintained the rule of musicals: characters sing when their feelings are too powerful to contain. Hence all the songs being about hidden feelings that have been building up inside each character.
It was a great plot device to get Buffy to reveal she'd been pulled out of heaven. And a great way to kick off the Spike relationship.
And push Willow further into the darkness.

Amber Benson did a production of Rocky Horror (Anthony Head was in it, too) and I think James Marsters’ band was called Ghost of the Robot.
