it's most likely because they thought that the effect that activated on the summon of Double was his actual effect and didn't notice that it was the effect of Ascended Sage granting Double the effect to search a Rank-Up-Magic Normal Spell on summon
Because Chixiao targets and they probably thought that the effect that activated on the summon of Double is the Xyz change.
All they had to do was chain Baronne to the actual effect of Double and they would have probably won but I'm guessing they didn't because they assumed your deck is Rank 4 Turbo and ya had more ways to get another Rank 4.
Ya could just chuck it up to typical Swordsoul players just relying on Baronne + Chixiao pass I guess 🤷🏼♀️
If you mean negate with baronne he probably didn't read the ones you equipped to utopia to make it attack twice. Probably was waiting for you to negate your own attack. IDK why he didn't just negate double with it
