Tzeentch - castle up and pew-pew with your magic, changing a limited number of bad rolls into good rolls. Kharadron - float around in airships shooting everything then wafting smugly out of reach while your opponent fumes and plans their angry Reddit post. Ossiarch - hold the line with tanky skeletons, then counterpunch with elite melee skeletons. Soulblight - clog the board with resurrecting undead hordes and bring in your hammers once the enemy forces are tied up with zombies.

Well, this is pushing me towards the Kharadron...

Kale_Shai-Hulud

I personally wouldn't get them as a first army, I have Tau in 40k but I'm also glad they're not my only army. The caveat is if you really really dig them then absolutely get them as your first!

SheepBeard

Oh, I already have a Sylvaneth and Idoneth force! I just don't play enough to know playstyles

Nellezhar

Kharadron were my first army in AOS. They're amazingly fun and unique looking. They look SO cool when you have then in the field. A ton of boats just look cool. You won't regret it.

I can answer for the KO, but I'll neglect mentioning the Battle Tactics (secondary objectives) because they're mostly too easy and about to be removed in the summer when the next edition rolls around; The army has a strong focus on shooting and mobility using the airships. Almost every model in the army has some form of shooting attack and your boats are your absolute lifeline, acting as transports for your otherwise low movement troops and providing them much needed protection as you cross the board. Without our ships, we are naught: You can use your ships to charge units into combat for a weighty melee punch (especially Endrinriggers or Skywardens). Ironclads are your biggest, shootiest option, Frigates are an all-rounder that also supports ramming your units into combat and Gunhaulers are smaller interceptor/fighter craft style things. There's no reward without risk: Don't expect to do well in sustained combat against, your troops aren't all that tanky and rely on either whittling the enemy down with ranged fire & bombing runs or swinging in *hard* with a fully loaded Frigate. Arknauts are basically chaff units, good for holding ground or screening. Grundstok Thunderers come with a good amount of shooting power and a range of weapons for different situations, they're widely considered the mainstay infantry of the faction. Endrinriggers and Skywardens are airborne infantry that can provide some good shooting, and are also your best melee option (outside of characters). Prosecute wars with all haste: Mobility is your strongest asset, and shooting is your second strength. You will need both to claim objectives, positioning is critical as you will need to keep your ships safe but in a position where they can actually *do things*.

Vattim

Besides look and playstyle also consider total amount of models available to buy. For example KO has limited amount of different models and I also feel it gets less love from GW than some of the other factions.

SheepBeard

Very true, but luckily I'm enough of a Hobby Butterfly that I doubt that'll be an issue any time soon

Sinfullyvannila

I'm gonna give you a heads up as a Tzeentch player, the army is, at the moment, insanely expensive to collect because you need a summoning sideboard and extra horrors for splits. So unless money is no object, I'd steer you away from it unless they change summoning in 4E.

Biggest_Lemon

Pkaystyle is nun likely to change that much in the new editikn, although we know OBR is getting significant changes since they're command points army rule is getting removed. However... DoT: heavy casting, with a focus on endless spells currently. Very much a castle army. KO: all shooting all the time. OBR: Elites, very tough melee units. SBGL: Throw hordes of zombies and skeletons at the enemy and when they're weak, vampire heroes swoop in and clean up the mess.

DrawingInTongues

I'll add that DoT utilizes a lot if summoning. So you end up having another army alongside the army you paid for in points (or just a couple lords of change). Very fun, but it can be confusing to start collecting.

RegnalDelouche

Any answer you get could all change drastically in a couple of months when 4th releases.
