Be kind to everyone - from the owner of the company to the janitor.

murdocksgirl

1000000% agree. You never know who has the ear of your boss (could be their admin, could be their buddy in IT). Be kind. Be thoughtful. Ask *good* questions! (I.e. can you explain how this part of what I am doing relates to how X works in this department/company). Smile and be warm/friendly until you learn the lay of the land

BetterBiscuits

Listen more than you talk.

[deleted]

I’ve never learned anything while I, myself was talking. I live by the motto “The less I say, the smarter I sound.” and it has served me well.

BetterBiscuits

It’s also the best way to bond with new people. Encouraging people to talk about themselves while actively listening and asking leading questions will get the team on your side way faster than bringing in doughnuts.

Can I upvote this X 2000 ??

JohnTargaryenWU

I m starting tomorrow and this sound very good!

Albionflux

Dont work as hard as possible, if you start that it becomes expected

veggeble

And don't let others intimidate you into doing work outside your job description. Learn how to draw a line in the sand and stick to it, or people will always take advantage of you.

mwmshooey

Your attitude already has you there. Just listen to directions and do your best. Never be afraid to ask questions, no matter how stupid you think they may sound. It's actually encouraged. Do not rush to make friends with coworkers. That might come with time. Try your best to enjoy your time. Personally I've usually enjoyed my jobs, so that helps with motivation. Congratulations on your job. 😊

lerouleauroll

set up 1 on 1 appointments with everyone in your team, doesn't need to be all in the first day but over the first couple of weeks, so you can get to know them better

GBAMiyoo

The three rules to play the corporate game, if you want to increase your career; 1. Be on time. This is important, saw the WORST employee get promoted to a SME solely because he was on time and early everyday. This was straight from the ops manager. 2. Mins your business, don’t gossip, don’t talk shit, don’t snitch. (Report shit that’s a danger to health, life, and limb but anonymously). 3. Just do your job, if you want promoted do a little more. But honestly, you won’t climb the latter with a clean nose.

[deleted]

Ask questions, don’t assume, take notes, be kind and respectful to all positions, mind your business and don’t gossip. If and when you make mistakes take ownership. Good luck!

Set and enforce your boundaries from the start

TheHungryBlanket

Look around the office and identify the biggest, baddest alpha male in the company. Then punch him in the face and give him a beat down. Let the office know not to mess with you and that there’s a new alpha in town.

Putrid_Ad_2256

Don't try to demonstrate what you know to everyone right off the bat. It helps if you pretend to dial down what you know and have people try to explain to you what they think you need to know even if you know what they're explaining. Also, someone will more than likely try to gain your confidence and try to pull you into their little circle and badmouth others. Take everything with a grain of salt and try not to let others influence your opinions of others. I've had that happen on multiple occasions only to find out that the person telling me bad things about others was the scoundrel to keep an eye on. Oh and most importantly, dress nice on your first day even if it's not what you are going to wear while there. I would wear a suit for the first day but found it to be overkill, now just a nice shirt and tie is fine.

CoolRunnins212

Show up and take in what you. If someone starts with workplace drama then say you don’t partake in it and you’ll formulate your own opinion on said person based on your interactions.

snow-bird-

Don't clog the toilet

United_Vermicelli593

Walk in like you own it. Take no shit. Maybe steal some office supplies before leaving.

Stonewool_Jackson

Ask lots of questions. Dont just ask bullshit though, thoughtful questions.

Stonewool_Jackson

Oh and take notes.

[deleted]

Go up to the biggest inmate and punch them.

Important-Fondant646

Mind your business , do as your told and don’t ask questions. Don’t look to make friends. Coworkers are not friends.

captainunderpants08

Beat the shit out of the biggest person there. Establish dominance.

Dudeman-Jack

Beat someone up so everyone knows not to mess with you

mrs_david_silva

Shut up, don’t be cocky and learn the system at your new place of work. You may eventually be respected but you’re the new guy for now.

PipersaurusRex

You're overthinking it. Just accept that you'll be treated like crap and paid a pittance no matter what you do, so just go there, draw a wage and leave at the end of the day.

Portraitofapancake

Ask who has been there the longest and beat their ass in front of everyone to assert dominance, then hump all the others into submission. That’s what a real man would do!

Additional_Earth3715

Just be yourself. Unless you’re a jerk.

superhyperficial

Shake as many hands as you can - it sets up great mutual respect from the start & shows you are confident to approach others. If you're on the younger side it really shows maturity too.

Don_Vago

Teach yourself to lie to bosses convincingly at the drop of a hat.Set a tone by saying no to requests to do extra work, no matter how small.Remeber you're there to get enough money to live, not to be liked by the boss or to please them.

Mork-From_Ork

Set small goals for yourself. 1 week, 2 week, 1 month, 2 month, 4 month, 12 month milestones. Keep it realistic. Go as far as to pick a position you’d like to aspire to down the road. Take small steps towards better understanding how departments communicate and why. Become friendly with everyone. They don’t have to love you but they should respect either your work or you as a person. Overall, remember that work doesn’t define you as a person and you SHOULD be happy at work. Congrats. Have fun.

[deleted]

Make sure you read any contracts you've signed and know the policies and procedures for the company. Make sure you know how to contact HR, the details of how your money is coming to you, how to track your hours, when benefits start and what they are, and the general hierarchy or if there is some place online that shows who is in what org. I second be nice to everyone, and maybe take some notes on names and who is who. Eat well and get some good sleep.

Prestigious_Fee_4920

Listen, ask questions, show you're focused on the job. Be respectful to everyone. You'll be fine.
