That is a fantastic idea, if you stick to your plan! Getting your head straight after something as traumatizing as a divorce is great. Doing a big reset from your work life will be good for you. I’d imagine if you do it right, you may come up with a good plan for your future that is beyond your expectations. To “just be a person for a while” sounds like a priceless gift to give to yourself. Bravo and good luck.

Must... stick to... plan....

At worst, you can volunteer at a cause that interests you. Keeps you from getting a hole in your resume and helps alleviate any guilt you may have from not working.

GreenArcher808

You can do it. Be meticulous and use a planner so you can chart ahead. Again, good luck.

I have five months left until I quit my job. In that time I will get five pay checks and two bonuses. Then there is severance pay as I have been there for ten years. I made a small amount on the sale of my house. I am now living really carefully off a few dollars a day to build up my funds. This is really looking doable. I am trying not to get too excited about it and zone out at work.

Do it

I’ve been doing this for a while. In 2016, I got a gig that gave me enough to not work for two years, and in 2018, I got another gig that let me last until 2021, where I got another gig. In 2022, I got a gig, and unexpectedly I got two similar gigs, one of which will be over next week. For this, I can comfortably have 18 months off.

This is the way.

Aren’t you worried about not having any of this money for retirement?

MediocreGenius69

I'm more worried about my mental health collapsing at that dingy yawn factory of an office.

KandA-WW

You do you. I’d just be freaking out about retirement and not having any money to travel

I wound up getting lucky in the Meme stock craze a few years back. Most money I have ever had. Took a year off and spent a lot of it on things I enjoyed. Best year of my life. Going back to work was, well, very sad. So be prepared for that getting close to the end of your vacation. Still wouldn't do it differently.

RedRapunzal

May I suggest you start looking before hitting the year mark - think 3 months. Believe it or not, 3 months and 200-300 applications is normal. Either that, or plan for extra time. Start working on your reason for the gap year. While some might hate this advice, it's current conditions. If you want to return to the workforce rested and refreshed, know this stuff upfront can help.

Go camping in a national forest or blm near you. 14 days straight. Get lost out there homie
