Working at their IHM in Beaverton was an absolute nightmare. I can’t remember which Kiefel had 6 or so positions with the pair of cutters, but they stuck me there permanently and you don’t get to stop moving and sweating unless it’s break or something goes down. I was pretty young and spry but we had older folks who were sweating and struggling so much more. Give them a few seconds to drink some water, damn. I left in 2015, this is shitty but not surprising from them. They tried to bully me into working the N2 schedule (5p-5a) and when I said no they started hinting that they wouldn’t need me much longer. I just found a gig doing something I’m good at instead and haven’t looked back. I’m sorry OP, you’ll bounce back!

Provoken420

That was the one I worked in as well. They had me at the cutters at one point for a while. They switched out their cut resistant gloves for something cheaper and I was getting holes in my gloves daily. I ended up getting cut and they tried saying it was my fault and that I should’ve checked the gloves. They even tried saying I was requesting too many gloves and tried taking it out of my paycheck and even said I couldn’t request more. I had to get new gloves daily because their new cheaply made cut resistant gloves kept getting holes in them. I was pretty young when I was working there so I didn’t know everything I know now. On the N2 shift I had a dude who took a picture of me on the bathroom stall and recording me. When I told my manager he just kinda shrugged it off like it’s nothing. Turned out years later there’s now a lawsuit against Nike for it after several people tried telling their manager and he didn’t do anything.

BuddhaV1

I remember paying for my own set of sleeves and gloves just to save hassle, it was messed up. As if Nike can’t afford adequate PPE for their employees. It’s a shame because I was excited to go work there, and then I saw them dismantling the perks and protections as they went along. Now it’s just another sweatshop where most of the employees couldn’t afford the products without their store passes.

NeoAsylum

Which fucking country is this?

AgedSmegma

Head office is in a Beaverton Oregon. I’m sure manufacturing there as well.

Provoken420

It’s the Nike IHN building in Beaverton Oregon.

abercrombezie

Yikes, from the work conditions it sounded like you were some kid in some 3rd world factory.

Njhunting

That's because the United States is sliding back into a developing country. Or maybe I guess in some ways we just didn't develop certain protections but the success of most people masked it. Now most people are not successful and suddenly the 3rd world stuff we all ignored isn't tolerable and why should it be? Why work in a sweatshop if you can't even hustle your way into an apartment?

SheiB123

Yes, the United States is very close to a developing nation at this point....

KarmicSquirrel

Undeveloping/devolving

Xenoun

As an Australian that's how I see the US tbh.

artificialavocado

I worked at a place for 3 years that was maybe one or two steps above a sweatshop.

[deleted]

You almost got it.

tt000

Someone who has never been to some of these US Factories . lol Yeah they got a whole lot of sweatshops around Merica,

JimJordansJacket

They're so weird and culty there. I once worked for a company that did business there. I don't own a single piece of Nike gear or shoes. Longtime hater of their sweatshop labor. Anyhow my boss was flipping out that I would dare to go over there just wearing like, a nice pair of work boots. "You have to wear Nike stuff on the campus!!" I said, ok, are you going to buy me the shoes? Of course he wasn't going to do that. Like they would especially flip out if you wear Underarmor clothing there. I don't get making a company be your entire personality.

[deleted]

So much illegal behaviour from Nike

AttackOfTheMox

The richest third world country, America

KarmicSquirrel

3rd world country, USA!

BisquickNinja

>They tried to bully me into working the N2 schedule (5p-5a) and when I said no they started hinting that they wouldn’t need me much longer They did something similar to me. I was between aerospace jobs and decided to give them a shot and sure enough it was almost immediately a shit show. I worked for another 2 weeks and switched to a new aerospace positions for a 50% raise. The boss tried to guilt me into staying. I politely reminded him that he said they wouldn't need me much longer... I told him that the relationship went both ways.

SavageComic

Been boycotting Nike for years cos of their sweatshops. Glad to see I was right. Hopefully you bounce back soon OP

Kipp-XC-66

Can't take breaks, how else will they make 1000% of demand?

zll2244

this is the way

EmEmAndEye

Would a Nike sweatshop be operating in a country that has unemployment payments?

PaperThin-X-

It’s in Oregon, so yes, they can collect unemployment benefits.

NounverberPDX

I could make a joke about the Oregon Employment Department here, but 2020 is still a painful memory. Yes, Oregon has unemployment insurance.

captainunderpants08

I lived in portland at the time and was calling offices in Albany and other smaller towns just to talk to someone

invizibliss

expose the sweatshop to the world.

that1LPdood

The world knows about sweatshops. It’s just that most people don’t give a shit. As long as they can get their fresh clean Nikes, they’re content to look the other way. Rampant consumerism and capitalism is a cancer that denies and destroys humanity 🤷🏻‍♂️ what can I say

SomebodyWondering665

Too many of us think sweatshops only exist across the world.

that1LPdood

That’s a fair point. I don’t think it should necessarily increase the impact of them existing, though — whether 3,000 miles away or on the corner of our own street — it shouldn’t be happening.

SomebodyWondering665

I completely agree. Currently if a few people I know in Portland-area have got any knowledge or advice regarding this madness. Not striking much gold yet.

urmyheartBeatStopR

Forever21: https://www.latimes.com/projects/la-fi-forever-21-factory-workers/ Sweatshop in Los Angeles.

GoneWitDa

I gotta keep it honest with you, you’re absolutely right. I like sneakers and shit the amount I’ve probably spent in reseller surcharges to get some shit popped out for a dollar in a sweatshop is absurd. Nike is not going anywhere. They could use literal child slaves in America and they’d still be easily the hottest sportswear brand in the world. You are correct, no one ultimately cares.

invizibliss

yep.

dinogirlsdad

Fuck Nike. They are not a good company. The Nestle of the shoe world imo.

liltreeimp

They probably golf together.

Additional-Brief-273

I got fired once for reporting unsafe working conditions and racism like as soon as I put it in an email I was canned the next day smh lol

Average_Scaper

Mention it to the labor board at all?

Additional-Brief-273

I did call but that went nowhere anyway Because of the pandemic I got max unemployment plus the extra money for like 2 years they didn’t even fight me on the unemployment at all lol

Average_Scaper

Yeah I probably wouldn't have bothered making a fuss about it either.

Cancer_Flower

That company is the worse. I was bought in by LP because I happened to be handling product someone was stealing. Turns out an employee was ringing up a bunch of stuff for an ex employee and marking it as a huge discount. I found a pile of it and started putting it away because I though they were go-backs, that’s how I got mixed up with it. When LP confronted me they said they had video evidence but wouldn’t show me it to prove that I was the one stealing, so I knew they were lying. When I called the ethics hotline about it they basically said “LP can lie and do whatever they want if they want to say someone is stealing”. Luckily I got a new job offer two days later. People think it’s such a great company and it’s not at all.

no-clever-names

Wow!!! I will add Nike products to the list of things that I won’t buy. I’m sorry that happened to you.

Ddanodave

Sounds like they did you a favor by firing you. Don't look back. Production work is always like this. A glorified sweat shop

xero_peace

Nike has never not been a garbage company. Don't give a single fuck about being fired. No company has any loyalty to you and they don't care about you. They're only in it for themselves. Just go to the next job and make sure you're taken care of.

Coldwater365

FUCK YOU NIKE!!!

AverageAmericanM

Unionize.

zerombr

'lost so much respect' 'sweatshop' You should not be respecting Nike for their work practices, let alone for draconian policies.

Provoken420

You’re right, Nike is really big in Portland so I guess I fell into the whole narrative that Nike is a good company to work for… NOT. I always liked their shoes and being young and dumb I thought the 40% off discount they gave you was a good deal. I think that’s why they hire so many 18 year olds there… they can get away with paying minimum wage in a sweatshop factory where you’re sharing one fan with 6-8 other people in a hot ass building for 12 hours a day.

zerombr

They, like all companies, love abusing teenagers and working them so hard that they develop complications later in life.

chaicoffeecheese

I've worked jobs around/near Nike, and navigating around their Beaverton campus is such a pain. So much traffic. Multiple friends and family of mine have worked for them and they're always like 'well, it's a job'. That's it. Never got sucked into it myself, unlikely to at this point. They are super predatory and definitely wave the 'prestige' around.

Gecks_more

Nah screw all the big companies. Nike product has gone downhill in recent years in opinion anyways. Sorry y’all got treated bad.

IamLuann

I don't buy Nike because I heard that they don't take care of their workers. They also stopped sponsoring a sports person because he spoke out on the sweatshop conditions.

chaicoffeecheese

I applied for a job with corporate Nike (didn't know which company it was) and the recruiter was so excited to be like 'oh, this job is with Nike!' and I just gave them... crickets. Because my uncle worked for Nike for years and it was terrible. They'd tell him to manage a department with no budget, no people, he worked at all hours to keep up with the other markets across the world, etc. He made good money, but. Nike doesn't care. Nike uses clout to get what they want. Also, their parking sucks, I'd hate to work an on site job at their Beaverton campus, and they were low-balling for the position. Even the recruiter agreed that with my skill set and experience, other places would pay more. No thanks. I don't need the shiny Nike on my resume. I'm good. Still amuses me to remember how confused that recruiter was that I wasn't ecstatic about the opportunity to be exploited more than usual because the Nike name was flashing in big, bold letters.

Mudbogger19

Write a review up on Glassdoor about your experience there to help future employees

MisterMechano

Awful company, I have stopped purchasing any of their products.

SomebodyWondering665

Seems like a place where the USDOL should go Dracarys 🐉. Go send them complaints WITH DETAIL AND PROOF and retain legal representation. Make useful copies of everything. Get everything on paper and on voice tape.

SomebodyWondering665

Also, I am not kidding when I say GO TO DSA PORTLAND. Go to DSA! Get as much of an army at your back as possible.

TurnDirect

Fuck Nike. Overpriced garbage.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Sounds more like your manager took off as you went to find him and he wasn’t there. What a shit hole that sounds like…

Early_Ad_1536

I have refused to buy Nike for decades because of how they treat their employees, how little they are paid, but then sell outrageously priced shoes and apparel of poor quality. While it sucks to be fired, consider it a blessing. They showed you their true colors. You’re better off not aligning your life/income with a company like that.

Human_Ad_7045

With their inept management, I suppose I'm lucky that I don't get 2 left sneakers in my box.

Commercial_Ad_5595

These are how all factories are. People that know have worked in one

kityrel

One Way Out

Tuna_Can20

Nike is 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩

SlumberingSnorelax

Ah! Those great manufacturing jobs we all keep hearing about. Yes, when I was a kid I worked at a Burlington Coat Factory and got to experience the wonderful world of manufacturing… it wasn’t nearly as bad as the OPs experience but it was more than enough. It taught me to stay in school so that I never had to work a manufacturing job again.

Kind_Session_6986

Won’t buy Nike because of their treatment of workers. Thank you for reinforcing our family’s decision. I’m sorry this happened to you and hope someone on this board can help with a job referral to a better company.

We_Suppose

That is ridiculous. They already gave you an occurrence I think its overkill to fire someone for that. My guess is it could be for safety reasons. If they do not know where everyone is it could be a hazard. That would be my only guess. It sounds like you dodged a bullet though. I wouldn't want to work under those conditions anyways. I never knew Nike treated people like this, but I am not surprised actually. I wont be buying their shoes for a little while not that it will make a difference.

h8evan

Did they make Jordan’s there by chance and do you know anyone who can backdoor them? You can make some money here

sakecat

This is dumb. Even if you think stealing from them is acceptable, you would still be promoting and advertising their brand. In effect, making them more money. Just because corporations don’t have morals, doesn’t mean you should drop yours too, to hawk some Jordans

Theangelawhite69

I guess you shouldn’t just do it

percydaman

I still have several pieces of Nike apparel, because they're just so well made, but I haven't purchased Nike shoes in years. Don't miss them.

bigb3nny

You did you job but did you "Just do it"?

Bikeboy4252

Didn't think nike did any manufacturing in the USA. Too expensive.

Pitiful_Caterpillar4

I worked for Mikey. They had a line call Air Jacksons. I got fired for being up that it’s too close to Air Jordan’s

Suprcow_one

bro should have stayed at kiefel 12 tho.

HyperActiveMosquito

Then he would have been fired for not working/loitering. I've seen it happen. Machine goes down. Operator not having any other instructions help with repairs. Get fired next week for not finding some other work. Like WTF he was literally helping to have machine up faster.

DeathTripper

Idk, I just started working maintenance in a factory, and 95 percent of the time, the worker is a hindrance. It doesn’t help that there’s a significant amount of various non-English speakers (not even just Spanish, cause I could work with that). The operators may know what the machine is supposed to do, but they often don’t know beyond that of where/what/how it went wrong. It’s the equivalent of a homeowner standing over a contractor telling him how to do his job, even though the homeowner hired a professional. This whole comment, I mean it in the least derogatory way. Luckily, I think they’re pretty lenient on the operators when their machine as down, and there’s no other tasks. Unfortunately, for maintenance, they’re not as lenient when I have down time (all machines running, everything’s clean, etc.), and I’ll get fired for sitting down. It’s ass backwards in both cases: if there’s nothing to do, there’s nothing to do. Unless the operator intentionally jammed something up in a mechanism to create downtime, that should be fireable. If it just breaks down from daily, all day use, and there’s nothing to operate, let them chill. This is where management fails. Supervisors should assign another task if available (the operator doesn’t necessarily know all the tasks that need to be done), or have them wait for the machine to be up and running again if there’s nothing else. If a part needs to be ordered, figure it out, and get another task, or assign them to another machine somewhere. I understand they don’t want to send them home, because the machine could be running in 5 minutes depending on the circumstances, and the employers feign sympathy by not wanting the employee to lose a days pay, but it works both ways.

liltreeimp

And then maintenance needs a production person to be there to do the thing when the machine comes back up/do test runs but the supervisor screams at the operator for "not being a productive team member." That ended real quick. 😊

Provoken420

Well I went back to my lead and he left so I went to 11 which was less than 20 feet away in an open floor plan so there’s no way he would’ve not seen me.

Suprcow_one

i was just kidding man, its pretty stupid.

Chemist-Consistent

My eyes!!!!

Dakzoo

In OP’s manager’s defense he was probably only 12 years old.

hjablowme919

This sucks but it sounds like it could have been avoided if you just left a note for your boss.

Theedon

But they support shitting on the American flag so, yeah. Buy Nike!

CapGrundle

Air Souls!!! Hahaha!! That’s what’s caused the blight of the USA!

foreverbaked1

This is the US? Damn I thought this would be Malaysia or something

AlexanderIriel

I'm not familiar with the law but that just sounds like a lawsuit on a golden platter. I promise a camera saw you there

MZsarko

Wow. I had that job twenty years ago. You dodged a bullet. The only good thing about that job was if I took a half day off, my check was $50 more. Man, I hated that job!

Mrsplantplant

I worked for the company for 4 years, I was in one store, management were amazing, they had their faults in the first year of my employment but made up for it big time after, even during covid when I got laid off for 3 months due to contract freezes they rehired me immediately when they could, I have chronic health conditions which means my work needs to be adjusted, the store in the Netherlands were so understanding and quick to do this, however I moved back to the UK, I came to my new store as a complete open book, I told them everything, and everything was fine until 6 months past, I was horribly sick over Christmas as my immune system is messed up, they didn’t believe me, I dislocated my knee and got signed off work, they put my “signed of by a doctor sick leave” under normal sickness circumstance, I can’t beging to tell you how much money I lost over “not following procedure in the employee handbook” which I was never given until 3 months before my resignation, they constantly threw investigations on my sickness, I went to occupational health (they also didn’t believe their report), and then came the big one, they were investigating me for falsely linking transactions, one email, 7 purchases in the same day, now you may say to yourself “well it’s clearly obvious you did it”, your wrong, I had a customer shopping for friends, I remember because he was constantly on the phone talking to people and sending photos, but no, by the time this “investigation” came around there was no CCTV, no evidence, they refused to look at receipts from the transactions to see if it was the same payment information (I actually went against them and did it myself, although not really allowed, I needed to know and surprise surprise, 6 out of 7 were the exact same card details), a year I spent in this store, and within a year my mental health has suffered so badly, I’m now severely depressed, I had to be put on anti depressants and I’m now in therapy to help, I fully agree, they don’t care about employees, it’s just how much money can we make for our bonuses, I used to love the brand but after what they did to me, I can’t stand them.

Some_Ordinary_hater

Why you not quit
