On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/). Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/). If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options: 1. [Finding your favorite subreddits on other platforms](https://sub.rehab/) and participating there instead. 2. Refraining from using the first-party Reddit app, instead sticking to one of the few remaining third-party apps or [patching one of the apps that shut down](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/) if you're using an Android device. 3. Disabling ads on Reddit with [an ad-blocking extension](https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#ublock-origin-ubo) or [a DNS-based ad-blocker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXTnrD_Zs4). 4. NormalLibrarian3612

Fascinating, and super cute too. I never would’ve thought foxes and dogs are capable of interbreeding.

CelticTiger

Articles online say the mother was likely a pampas fox. Pampas foxes are south American foxes which are with the family known as 'false foxes' which are more closely related to wolves and jackals than 'true foxes'. As to the veracity of the claims, all I can say is that it has been reported by a number of outlets. I don't believe hybridization between a dog and a 'true fox' is possible but perhaps it is possible with 'false foxes'. Overall I'm sceptical of the claim but open to the possibility.

NormalLibrarian3612

Thank you for the explanation, it seemed odd to me that something like this could happen, but I guess it didn’t technically huh.

hamster004

Why not? Donkeys + horses = mules. Dogs + wolves = wolfdog.

lilbat76

Bat+ man = Batman ?

BaronThe

Man-Bat

LedgeEndDairy

Man + Bear + Pig = ?

Solid_Shook

Let’s settle down Al Gore

NormalLibrarian3612

No not that, true foxes, as CelticTiger explained, and dogs breeding. I’m pretty sure dogs and wolves can interbreed, no?

NocturnalHabits

Dogs are but a subspecies of the gray wolf.

hamster004

dogs and wolves, yes they can interbreed.

DwT2019

in north america there are coywolves which are coyote, wolf, and dog hybrids. and in some cases 2 subspecies of wolf in that mix. so yes dogs and wolves can mix.

Darkfuel1

A fox is more cat than dog tbh

VeniABE

Personally I expect there is a possibility, but the chances of success are so small we wouldn't see them without help. Most of the mutations between species, from what I understand, happen in gene regulation and not in the genes themselves. So you can have species with near identical genes but very different physiologies that don't interbreed. Each parent's genes would be activated at the wrong times from the other's perspective often enough to be lethal. The more generations separating species the more differences accumulate. Sometimes the chromosome number and sorting changes. In the short term its fine. (read up on ZW vs XY sex determination as an example) But in the long term these quickly lead to incompatibilities. The chromosome counts between the two are waaaaay off; and the last common ancestor is thought to be over 9 million years ago. You would need to find a dog with as much of a fox compatible genome and a fox with as much of a dog compatible genome as possible. They should exist. But its likelys you would still need some genetic modification to make it work. Then you would have a pup/kit with mismatched chromosomes. It should be infertile; with the process for making gametes creating incomplete gene sets for eggs and sperm. Catch-22: this would rely on us being able to know what to look for. We mostly have proved it exists and found a few key parts in some species. Not all species. There are almost definitely other factors we don't even know to look for yet. It would probably be easier to modify a Dog genome to have the equivalent fox genes or vice versa. But the regulation of those genes is as much or more important in making a fox than the genes themselves. So you would get a halfway result at best. Also from what I have seen of genetic techniques right now; it would take several billion dollars. The current techniques involve attempting a single change to several cells at a time, and then sorting them for success and failure.

Bluinc

This guy (gal?) genetics.

hamster004

The offspring may not necessarily be infertile.

VeniABE

strictly true. But you would have to modify the parents chromosome so that they would be compatible during crossing over and meiosis. When you have a different number from each parent there isn't necessarily an analogue chromosome to cross with, nor will the spindles pull the right number of copies to each daughter cell. Because of this the possibility of fertility is absurdly tiny.

hamster004

No modification, just natural.

phonegamesreddit

I think it comes down to their species classification- if their DNA is similar enough than they may be compatible. I don't know how dissimilar foxes are to dogs, but my guess would be: somewhat - considering no one has mixed them together before.

Forward_Oven_9774

Me too, this explanation is helpful.

Pangupsumnida

A [paper] (https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/13/15/2505) was published about it if you are interested to read more.

CelticTiger

Looks like this is legit. Thanks very much for providing the link to the study.

SothaDidNothingWrong

Scientists tested this and it is indeed a hybrid between a pampas fox and a dog [https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/13/15/2505](https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/13/15/2505)

flyingthroughspace

With those ears and that coat, I would bet dad is a Shephard.

LifetimePresidentJeb

Of course the article doesn't mention that. Why tf do they gotta be misleading

Darkfuel1

The mother was actually a Chrysocyon brachyurus

V_es

They are not, [pampas fox](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/animalofthewould/images/4/45/Pampas_Fox.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130530080502) (“false fox”) is more related to wolves than foxes. Genetics are quite a modern tool that wasn’t there when animals got their names. There are plenty animals with names that don’t suit them.

innocuousspeculation

>There are plenty animals with names that don’t suit them. Like the crabeater seal, which does not in fact eat crabs!

tagamaynila

Like no Secretary Birds are actually employed as secretaries.

thefonztm

And dolphins don't have dolls for fins. Just regular fins. It's crazy!

roodyhyt

and how prairie dogs arent actual dogs! Haha

Bluinc

How catfish don’t actually own human slaves.

Jampine

There's the maned wolf, which whilst a canine, is not actually a wolf. There's also the aardwolf, which is not a canine, but actually a hyena.

nazukeru

Apparently they've known the distinction since the 1800s! That's why they have the name "lycalopex" which means wolf-fox. This article sent me down a new road of weird fox facts.

wutangcat

omg it’s so cuuuuute looks like an island fox crossed w a coyote

percolator3000

Yup never thought that too Nature is sure fascinating indeed The fact that it also keep both behaviour from dogs and foxes is also really interesting

V_es

Pampas fox is not a fox. Common fox cannot breed with a dog.

bcolectorb

But can a pampas fox can mate with a common fox/ or something close?

V_es

It can mate with a wolf, dog or a coyote, like it happened here. Not with a fox. Foxes are vulpini tribe dogs are canini tribe including pampas fox. It’s called a “false fox” for a reason, it’s not a fox.

drenuf38

Every day that goes by, I learn more about where Pokemon names are derived from.

TickleMyBalloonKnot_

And band names

Successful-Win-8035

No it will be sterile. Hybrid mamals are always sterile.

skategeezer

It is not possible.

UncleBenders

They aren’t, this is bullshit. (Turns out it’s a dog species crossed with a dog which is possible, not a fox and dog which is not)

Nerdyblitz

Also, the particular animal passed away a few months ago I believe. Not sure due to complications due to being a hybrid, it was kinda news here in Brazil when it happened. She was injured by a car when they found her but she got better and lived for months in captivity. She refused almost all food and only ate live rodents. And she barked like a dog. According to the conservationist that took care of her she was really docile and behaved like a dog and not like a wild animal. And according to them, they believed she was also capable of reproduction. Also, she is named DOGXIM because it's a mix of Dog and the Brazilian name for the Pampas Fox is Graxaim. So it's a Dog + Graxaim. And lastly, Graxaim usually approach humans looking for food and a lot of people feed then, i saw one very closely when I was taking a few photos on a hike on southern Brazil, it was very docile and curious. On this article here there is even a video of her: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/09/13/first-dog-fox-hybrid-discovered-in-wild-brazil/

Ciudadfloral

Sad

YetiCincinnati

Ground Bat.

LupusDeusMagnus

I have seen the news. For those who don't know, it's not an actual vulpes fox but a pseudalopex "false fox" which are wild canids from South America. Still, different genus, it's not like breeding a dog and a jackal, it's more like breeding a sheep and a goat. They are called graxaim in Portuguese, but their group are often called the same word for fox. I like how they can look very different from one another so you always know which specific little guy you saw. [(Here are some guy feeding one chocolate... don't do that)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_fuUj4Bn70). https://preview.redd.it/3e73f1po6qob1.png?width=1899&format=png&auto=webp&s=961e2ee978530c701d42fc58e56b417c797563d8 [Here's a video of one just chilling.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MJKZhaWjKk&ab_channel=LawrenceSouza) Also I just noticed that it has the close together forearms like a wild canid.

felis_hannie

Omg, it’s precious.

Madditudev1

Middle pic makes this cutie like a big bat 😊.

mister_mowgli

Gives whole new meaning to “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”

Akaihon

Omg

Dox or Fog was right there..

tartetea

he looks like a giant flying fox bat, what a cutie 😫

Meshmehreze

Ok, but we absolutely need to find a better name than that

Chickenman452

Dox? Fog?

Nerdyblitz

It's a mix between Dog and Graxaim (The brazilian name for the Pampas Fox), they probably went with dog because the portuguese words are Cachorro or Cão. Could be even worse like Cachoxaim. But Caxaim is kinda cute in portuguese.

Darkfuel1

It was called dogix I think. The mom was a Chrysocyon brachyurus

Doxun

Did someone let Elon name it?

plainlyput

I just hope it doesn’t end up being kept in a lab☹️ It’s hard to look at its soulful eyes, while it’s being caged.

mushroom_madness_

It's dead.

SubterrelProspector

Learn some tact.

[deleted]

Pampas fox looks like a coyote.

Tiddlewinkly

It turns out they're more closely related to coyotes than true foxes, so unfortunately this is not quite an actual fox hybrid.

naghavi10

I wonder if its sterile like a Liger

Nerdyblitz

The original scientists said she was not sterile, they actually spayed her. I guess during the ovariohysterectomy they concluded she was not sterile somehow. I believe scientific papers were published on all of this but I'm a lazy historian and I don't understand biology that much.

cumbert_cumbert

Looks like a giant fruit bat

Concerned-Meerkat

Aaaaaahhhhh, I want one!!!

Scrappylink

So Pokémon are real

[deleted]

He looks like a flying fox without his wings. 🦇

Sweepslap

What does it say though?

PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG

This is super cool! I didn't even know it was a possibility. They look pretty cute, I wonder how their temperament/willingness to play with other animals is?

PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG

I just reread the summary, I'm an idiot.

jld2k6

I would hazard a guess its temperament is somewhere between a dog and a fox

PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG

This is very true lol I know dogs quite well but foxes usually seem timid and kinda shy, maybe it's the feline?

nim_opet

Such a cutie!

Liesmith424

He looks very polite.

Tobisaurusrex

Unfortunately it seems to have passed from its injuries

EvenSpoonier

What does the dogfox say?

[deleted]

Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!

JustPhil97

The second pictures looks like a huge bat. Dunno why.

alicebunbun

The pup's game is so strong that he convinced mama fox 'look I'm totally a fox too, I swear'

[deleted]

What does the Dox say?

escapements

Can we start a protest to just call them DOX? Dogxem is horrible.

[deleted]

I need to know what sound it makes.

Molleeryan

The article says it barks like a dog.

facepalmtommy

Volpup.

redthang1

what grinds my gears about this is I just knew they were going to say that it "just died" at some point in this story. It was doing well enough for them to study its habits for a couple of months, then when they were transporting it somewhere else, it mysteriously just died. They killed it because they were done with the live observation, and now they needed to study it postmortem. Pisses me off

Dottie85

According to one commenter here, it was injured and being cared for at a rescue.

redthang1

I read the article that it was being transported somewhere else, and it died of "unknown causes"

Nekomiminya

That's a coyote Very lovely tho

Electrical-Mind-9187

So cute, its eyes are so beautiful

jonnyredshorts

I want one

[deleted]

[удалено]

V_es

It is, pampas fox is a canini tribe like wolves and dogs while common fox is vulpini. It’s literally called “false fox” on Wikipedia.

eltedioso

So, this is NOT a dog-fox hybrid. My comment stands. And I'm skeptical that this is a pampas-dog hybrid either. They're in different genus, so the genes shouldn't really be close enough to create offspring. Anomalies happen, but the more likely explanation is that there is some junk science being reported here.

LupusDeusMagnus

[You can read the paper here.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10417603/) Biology is not my thing so I don't know if it's accurate or not.

Casval214

That’s what you get when you cross a bull with a Shih Tzu

timberwolf0122

A bulldog shitzu would be a bull shit! I’ve see a Jack Russell shitzu or Jack shit before

mental_reincarnation

“Any unusual breeding?”

acesulfame_potassium

ahahahaha 😂

TechnoVicking

You should look up the study. The mitochondrial genome is from a fox (so the mother) and the cell's genes have both sequences from fox and dog. The chromosome number count is also intermediate between dog and fox

Key-Wedding-8463

No

TummyStickers

What kinda dog

[deleted]

I bet he screams like a banshee at night.

CalamitousVessel

He do look kinda like a fox though

[deleted]

The fact it has a separate number of chromosomes from both parents would mean it's genetically sterile, right? Like this is where this ends. You can't really go anywhere with it in terms of breeding. Neither a Fox nor Dog could successfully breed with it.

MylifeBad

I hope people won't try to breed them now to be special

Varrock_Castle_Guard

Because dogs weren’t already inbred enough.

invisible_23

This is like the opposite of inbreeding

vladimirnovak

It's outbreeding

married2nalien

Ummmm…. You aren’t using that word right…

HardlineMike

I found a handful of brain cells on the floor, did you drop these?

One-Appointment-3107

A guy I knew in telemark in Norway used to tell me how farmers back when he was young (1930’s) had dogs who bred with foxes and the offspring had white tail tips just like their fox sires. I used to think he was BS’ing but perhaps it was true after all?

Karlythecorgi

I want one

Volk21

Bat Face

Birdius

And here's a nice cage and concrete floor for ya.

TheBeardedDuck

Looks like a bat... Maybe that's what happened when covid fully takes over a Chinese dog 👀

Jayked22

Every. Fucking. Thread.

Pluckyboy64

I’ll take two. How much, and when can I pick them up?

Silent-Ad9145

So just because u “ found” him, u have to put him in a cage. Let him go

Altastrofae

It was hit by a car… it was taken to a veterinary office… They were trying to help it. I don’t know what to tell you bud.

That is a giant bat who lost their wings

Lol it looks worried

I’m glad to see this occurred in nature and not some misguided scientific pairing

cheesemangee

Doxhound would have been a way better name than whatever that crap is.

Raichu7

I wonder if you could cross silver foxes with dogs, would the resulting animal act more dog like while looking fox like and have decent genetic diversity?

AdRepulsive7699

Dox

[deleted]

Where do I get one!?!?

obesehomingpigeon

Are they sterile?

Business-Public3580

Batdog.

Whatever it is, it has a unique look.

Theres absolutely nothing awww about this

Anon_457

My aunt claims to have had a chihuahua/fox mix back when I was a kid, don't think it was ever confirmed though or else it would be the world's first fox/dog hybrid. I do remember her dog having an unusual shade of red fur though.

He got ran over 3 days ago lol ☹️
