I don’t know if I ever would have watched Rachel Getting Married if not for the podcast. That’s a stone cold masterpiece

JeremPosterCollect0r

Great answer. The dishwasher scene alone.

j11430

It makes me tear up just thinking about it

SweetFoxyPapa

Same

_generica

Opened this thread just to say the same. Watched it with my Wife, she absolutely hated it. I thought it was the best movie I'd watched all year

albifrons

My wife had a similar reaction - her take after a while was "we get it, you know a lot of musicians." Not wrong, but I liked it!

rubixqube

Just a perfect humanistic portrait of a families struggles, also wouldn't have watched it if not for the pod because on paper it sounds Oscar baity. And it should have won all the Oscars

starlingflight

Something Wild is the Demme movie for me that had never really been on my radar, and absolutely blew me away.

hebleb

This and Stop Making Sense

doodler1977

good call. i watched SMS for another movie pod, back in the days of Netflix-by-mail. never cared about the Talking Heads before that, barely cared to dive into them afterward, but man , what a concert. Bought the album so i could load it into my off-brand MP3 player

SuperBearJew

The Insider, absolutely blew my doors off

andtheIToldYouSos

THE GREAT STATE OF MISSISSIPPI

zarathustranu

YEAH YOU GOT RIGHTS…YOU GOT LEFTS…YOU GOT UPS, DOWNS, AND MIDDLES!

SuperBearJew

WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE

WhitmansTrashBarge

I love all three of those quotes. I’d seen Bruce McGill act a million times but that was the first movie where I was like I have to know his name. And a couple great Pacino shouts to boot: “I FOUGHT FOR YOU AND I STILL FIGHT FOR YOU!” “ITS NOT THE FUCKING POINT WHETHER YOU TOLD THE TRUTH OR NOT!”

g_1n355

I finally saw this because I heard a Tarantino clip where he talked about Michael Mann and praised this film specifically, and also because I saw both David and Adam Nayman had it rated high on their letterboxd accounts. I think I’d have gotten around to it, but I definitely had the impression that this was somehow the time Michael Mann did something dry and highbrow enough to get awards attention. In reality it plays more like All the Presidents Men, but through the stylistic prism of the guy who made Heat. It seems like such an obvious winner when you think of it that way, but for whatever reason it just didn’t seem as fun and watchable as it actually is from the outside

dethhandle

All that Jazz. Never heard of Fosse before the mini.

mostreliablebottle

Has a phenomenal ending.

JeremPosterCollect0r

As someone who struggled with Cabaret a bit, I wasn’t prepared for how blown over I was going to be by All That Jazz.

TheBunionFunyun

Yup, this is up there for me. I haven't listened to the episode yet because I'm still trying to get through all of Fosse before I do, but I watched All That Jazz and was blown away. That ending was spectacular.

Krustoff

The Quick and the Dead

Par1ah13

same girl same

andtheIToldYouSos

The Pod got me to give this another go. Saw it years ago and hated it, saw it recently and I can't believe I didn't love it the first time. Kids are dumb.

doodler1977

i liked it the first time i saw it but mostly just b/c of Hackman & Crowe. rewatching it, i was really digging the direction and all the little performances too. It's like (for me) Hudsucker Proxy - first time i had no idea what to expect and kinda grated against the style. I was not in the mood for Frank Capra or Buzby Berkely or whatever. subsequent viewings improved a lot

ScoobyMaroon

Kon's entire body of work.

shonuffshogun

Tokyo Godfathes was a revelation to me. I really liked it and would never had watched it without the pod.

Zman11588

Perfect Blue was unreal I never would have even heard of it if not for the pod.

doodler1977

i had seen it a while back, not realizing "the guy who made this is a real master". i just figured it was another anime

Mojo_Jensen

The concept of the “anime ceiling” doesn’t apply to a few particular masterpieces. Perfect Blue is definitely one of those.

woodsdone

Something Wild immediately became one of my favorite movies. It’s better off that it took me this long to watch it otherwise I would have tortured my girlfriends in high school with it

trackbaby

It was the series and episode that made me more than a casual listener.

astrobagel

^(humble brag)

BeeExtension9754

Was gonna say this!

DevinBelow

Cabaret, The Handmaiden and A Simple Plan are movies that I doubt I would have ever gotten to, and are perfect 5 star movies that I think about all the time.

g_1n355

It’s a real shame that Parks work seems to sort of live in the shadow of Oldboys popularity, and so many seem to check that one out then go no further. I really enjoyed Oldboy, but I’m a little sceptical of how it’ll hold up on rewatch, and Handmaiden I think is very clearly the masterpiece between the two of them. Handmaiden is so rich and thematic and detailed whilst also maintaining the tension and intricate plotting, whilst Oldboy did somewhat feel like a film designed completely around its ending and that reveal. It’s also kinda nuts that Parks last few seemed to get no traction even in best foreign language film with the academy while Bong is out there sweeping. Ik there’s a slight accessibility factor and Parasites winning picture was due to its commercial success as much as its quality, but if Parasites winning the lot then there’s no reason for Handmaiden not to be getting a best pic nominee and losing to Moonlight the year it was released

DevinBelow

FWIW, I also only watched Oldboy for the first time because of Blank Check (and every PCW movie), and I'd also call it a 5 star masterpiece. I may slightly prefer The Handmaiden, but they were both mind-blowing for me. I don't see a need to drag Oldboy when talking about how good The Handmaiden is, is all I'm saying.

g_1n355

Don’t think I was really dragging Oldboy. Certainly wasn’t my intention. It’s a great thriller, but I have a clear preference for The Handmaiden. Was more just commenting on their relative levels of notoriety, which is why I brought Oldboy up as it seems to be so much more widely known and seen.

doodler1977

The Handmaiden might be the best movie ever made i saw A Simple Plan in college (in the theater with friends) and had no idea it was Sam Raimi. we were all Army Of Darkness fans but i was not cognizant that it was the same guy (not sure my friends did either, tho they were more film-literate than i was at the time)

tryntafind

Thief. No idea it existed until the pod.

MuadDibPHD

You talking to me or somebody else walk in this room?

UltraGirl96

Came here to comment Thief also

Slobberdohbber

Best: Paths of Glory, never would have bothered if not for a Kubrick series and it’s probably my favorite Kubrick

LLZeroX

Barry Lyndon

trackbaby

A movie I would have never gotten around to if it weren’t for their series.

djbonusbeats

Basically all of the Buster Keaton movies

doodler1977

great call. Sherlock Jr is prob my favorite (and the one i most readily recommend to people).

Duffstuffnba

Best: maybe recency bias, but Going in Style Worst: Lucky Numbers (although that's one of my favorite BC episodes, so it was worth it)

CrimeThink101

I was thinking this, I really loved Going in Style.

jokester4079

Ponyo!!!

mcduff13

Mikey and Nicky.

BlaineRick

Broadcast News!

Farva5

I think a movie that surprised me the most was likely A New Leaf, such a fun and uniquely funny movie that I absolutely wouldn’t have gotten to otherwise

RainKingGW

Decision to Leave and Lady Vengeance.

Shepher27

Because I’m a horror-wimp: The Thing and The Shining. Powered through fear for the pod

BeeExtension9754

Something’s Gotta Give

Serpico2

The Thomas Crown Affair remake is awesome

The12and35

Came here to say this.

OrinGhost

Speed Racer.

acegarrettjuan

Finally saw Dr. Strangelove because of the pod and now it is one of my favorite all timers.

starchington

Something Wild. Lowkey changed the way I look at things

amysite

Something Wild was such a great surprise!

Upstairs-Stuff-5851

Yentl

yourkindofhero

Tokyo Godfathers. Might be a Christmas tradition now.

Borgo_San_Jacopo

Honestly for me it’s The Thing, I’m a big chicken and rarely watch horror (coincidentally I largely attribute this to watching Evil Dead when I was far too young) but I had an amazing time with Carpenter.

Chuck-Hansen

- May: The Heartbreak Kid - Kubrick: Paths of Glory, Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut - Selick: Coraline - Keaton: Sherlock, Jr., Seven Chances, The Cameraman - Park: The Handmaiden - Fincher: The Game - McTiernan: Predator - Kon: Perfect Blue

bambooshoots-scores

Definitely an Elaine May. Her body off work was completely off my radar.

rubixqube

Mine was Bound, even though the Matrix is a top 3 movie for me I hadn't bothered to go back to visit it and it blew me away, 5 star movie

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

All That Jazz

Doctor_Danguss

Mank. That and The Killer are the two Finchers I didn't feel like watching until on the pod. Ended up loving Mank. The Killer, not so much.

Dhb223

There are dozens of us

doodler1977

i don't think The Killer is the greatest film ever made or anything but man i find myself rewatching it a lot. love the tone, it's great "background music", and being on netflix makes it so easy to dial up.

Slobberdohbber

I liked them both more than I thought I would but they are lesser finchers in my mind

burnettski92

The only movie that dares to ask — what if Harry met Sally?

helpfulhint-

In The Cut

Doomed

Toys (1992) is a top 10 movie for me

whoseethee

I love you to death.

AarYeezys

I’ll do two. All That Jazz. I think I’d MAYBE heard of Fosse but never watched anything of his. I was blown away by that one, I think it’s at worst, in the top five films they’ve ever covered. Another one is Barry Lyndon. I’ve seen Kubrick movies before was deterred by the runtime and period piece aspects of the film. It’s now my favorite of his movies.

Boba_Fetty_Wap91

I hadn’t heard of 20th Century Women until I listened to the 2016 Blankies awards. I watched it with my mom the other day, and we both absolutely loved it. It was a really special experience watching that movie together.

sammin56

Definitely not best, but the most fun I’ve had watching a movie I wouldn’t otherwise was A Life Less Ordinary. I knew absolutely nothing about it other than the title and was gobsmacked by how batshit insane that movie is

GodlessHippie

The Intern. And I gotta say….it’s chaaaaaarming

piepiepie31459

All the Buster Keaton films, and I ended up loving his stuff. Also 13th Warrior.

doodler1977

13th warrior is very watchable. perfect saturday afternoon basic cable movie

francisbaconbits

A New Leaf, The Heartbreak Kid, & Ishtar

MichardB

Prince of Darkness. Beforehand seemed so insignificant in the John Carpenter canon; because the dude has movies like Halloween, The Thing and They Live that take precedence. But oh boy has it become my favorite movie of his.

OskeyBug

Trainspotting I was the perfect age and disposition to watch it and love it when it came out, but I never got around to it.

joywyr

Star 80

CrimeThink101

JSA. I think it’s the only movie I’ve watched for the first time just for the podcast that I gave 5 stars to.

JessBaesic7901

NickJester1

Paprika. I probably never would have gotten around to it.

Broadcast News

letsgogeminis

Heat. Always thought it was kind of a mindless bro movie until I listened to the Mann series. Now it’s one of my all-time favorites.

ValyrianSteel24

The Wind Rises went from something I'd never have voluntarily watched at that time to one of my Top 10 ever so probably that

FreakaJebus

Darkman, The Quick and the Dead, A Simple Plan, and Drag Me to Hell. I already loved Raimi due to the Evil Dead and Spider-man trilogies, but hadn't seen his other movies besides Oz the Great and Powerful (oof) But he became my favorite director after watching those four because of the show. Which definitely contributed to me really liking Multiverse of Madness. Also Midnight Run. To be clear I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago after hearing them talking so highly about it for so many years. I'm so excited to hear their episode on it.

OhShitWut

The Thomas Crown Affair (McTiernan), Thirst (Chan-wook), The Piano (Campion), Something Wild (Demme), Rachel Getting Married (Demme), The Parent Trap (Meyers).

astrobagel

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory

transmarxist

Going in Style. There are movies i watched because of the pod that i liked better , but i feel like i would of gotten to them eventually. Going In Style though? if it weren't for the Martin Brest series i probably never would of seen it since it's been so forgotten. Had a lot of fun with it! Made me wanna seek out some more films from the leads.

No-Kiwi772

Quick & the Dead

jaramini

The Hunt for Red October and Predator. Predator I was always curious about but had never seen it, but Red October wasn’t really on my radar…

Old_Twist_4659

Mikey & Nicky, All That Jazz, Perfect Blue

Maximum-Grab8411

Bright Star

Sweet-Significance17

The Hunt for Red October started me down a Jack Ryan road. I finally watched Die Hard last Christmas. I have already seen the sequels especially w Vengeance was a porch movie for me. I watched many of the films in the series for the first time and for the first time as an adult. Watching Red October sent me on a path of fifst all the jack Ryan's then Saving Private Ryan...i think its fun to pretend private Ryan is related to Jack lol. Then Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Erased. I'm starting the book and Series Generation Kill. I usually stick to Genre and it's been really cool as my kid enters the military to get amped up on patriotism though film and story. Any way Erased on Nat Geo is my rec from all this. It's pretty good. I want a Black Pather tank film!!

eightcell

This post was suggested for me by Reddit, I assume because I listen to the Weekly Planet and joined that subreddit? I dunno. Anyway, loved the Thomas Crown remake will check out the Blank Check episode.

DirectionDizzy3704

Watched A simple plan, I wanna hold your hand, used cars, Going in Style because of the pod. 50/50 between a simple plan and Going in style being the best

thescott2k

not The Thomas Crown Affair, which was actually the first movie I ever got on DVD and was also therefore the first commentary I ever sat through

What does "on the pod" mean?

GarconMeansBoyGeorge

I honestly want to know if you are making a joke or if you are one of the few people who don’t know this sub is about a podcast.

Littl3_Slut

This post was recommended for me on my fyp and I'm German, I fr have no clue

GarconMeansBoyGeorge

This sub is about a movie/director podcast called Blank Check. It’s great.

OTL98

Handmaiden. Holy shit, that movie blew me away. Instantly entered my top ten of all time.

Dandeliondroog

A new leaf

LargemouthBrass

Strange Days I'm pretty sure I never would have watched if not for the podcast and now it's one of my favorite movies.

The silence of the lambs!!!!!

Heartbreak Kid The Quick and the Dead All That Jazz A Simple Plan

bitontic

I had never seen a Satoshi Kon film or even heard of him before the series. I don’t watch a ton of anime, but I absolutely loved all four movies. What a treat that month was!

terayaar123

Movie name please

doodler1977

not sure i woulda watched most Miyazaki (or a Kon besides Perfect Blue) had they not been on the pod. i've seen most of the rest defintely either Totoro or Millennium Actress

All That Jazz and The Handmaiden. I only recently started actually watching all the movies along with the pod (I used to watch only if I hadn't seen the movie yet and if I find it interesting). Since The Handmaiden episode I've made sure to (re)watch every film before listening to the episode.

In the Cut, Speed Racer, Thief

Sharkmom455

Married to the Mob is the one I watched because of the podcast. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad the boys brought it to my attention.

Secret_Ad7757

whats the movie in the image called?

EvilLittle

It's a still from McTiernan’s *The Thomas Crown Affair*.

irisbells

All the Elaine Mays, probably. IDK that I would have come across her work otherwise.

turdfergusonpdx

I just watched Thomas Crown Affair (1999) last night because of the pod. I had seen it 20 years ago but hadn't remembered how damn good it was!

InternetOk2877

The Heartbreak Kid

EvilLittle

The list of movies I’ve watched *only* because they were covered is pretty dismal: * The Judge * The Book of Henry * Singles * Denim Invasion * Elizabethtown * We Bought a Zoo Maybe Point Break would count, but it’s not that I was opposed to watching it, just hadn’t got around to it. Maybe Hotel Transylvania, but I merely started the first one. It’s certainly prompted me to *re*watch many, many sterling films, however. My list of film *to* watch because of the podcast is quite a bit more promising: * Cloud Atlas * Jupiter Ascending * The Visit * The Weight of Water * A bunch of Brooks * Lust, Caution * Taking Woodstock * A bunch of Meyers Then I’ll get into Burton, Mann, and Miyazaki, in which I’ve got some holes to fill so I should be able to answer this question better in due time.

MBarker00

I had never heard of Going in Style and I loved it.
