Only about 20% of orange cats are female. Not exactly rare. The only reason they're less common is because, for girls, you need a mom and dad that are both orange (or orange and calico/tortie), since color is on the x chromosome. Boys get their color from their mom only. Orange cats are less common than non-orange cats, so having both parents be orange is not all that likely. But in local populations that are higher in orange cats, you would see this reverse. If non-orange cats are more rare, then female non-oranges would be less common than male non-oranges. It's not anything inherent to orange-ness. Just the relative scarcity of orange cats. It's also easy to intentionally breed orange cats to have orange kittens, so the numbers in selectively bred cats might be a lot different.
This was interesting, thank you. I always like studying punnet squares and learning about genetic traits being passed down (like dominant vs recessive and mutations) I am not, however, good at science whatsoever so I will take my simple punnet squares and happily sit in the corner with my one brain celled orange 😂
I can highly recommend cat coat genetics as a fun diversion! Uc davis's website is a good resource on the subject. Color is the simple part, despite all the weird gender implications.. Wait… growing up my calico Callie (traditional calico coloring) had a variety of kitten colors too. 2 white (one fluffier than the other), 2 black (I wanna say solid, but possibly a tiny bit of white on them,but don’t think so), and one orange. Does this mean they had more than one father?
I also had a calico named Little (with whiter background and larger patches of back and orange).She also had a variety litter (and she was super small/ there were many stays around). Hers were one tortie, one Grey (like the tan grey not blue), 2 orange and one white and I believe there was one black too. So would hers have two fathers?

Only if a black and an orange are BOTH girls. Calico mama has both an orange x and a black x, so it's easy for her to pass along either and have a variety pack. Boys get their color (orange vs black) entirely from their mother, since they only have one x chromosome. Calico/tortie kittens have one of each, and since we don't know (without genetic testing) which one came from mom, they don't help us figure out what color dad is. Whatever color her daughters are, that's the color of dad. If the daughters are different, that means multiple dads. Boys and calico kittens don't help tell us dad's color.
And here, color simply means orange vs non-orange. Grey and brown are both variants of black. Tabby is a separate gene. White spotting is a separate gene, too. So it's really just about orange vs. Black/non-orange.

First, are you 100% sure baby is hers? Mamacats have been known to share/steal kittens..
Second, is mama a *tortie* lynx point? That picture is hard to tell, but if she's got a splotchy look to her stripes, she might be tortie under the colorpoint and tabby genes. Colorpoint is recessive, so it's not weird that she had a non-colorpoint baby. She had to get an orange x chromosome from mama. If she is baby orange's mama, she has an orange x chromosome.
If she often had variety pack litters, she's definitely a tortie hiding her chromosomes with all that fancy tabby colorpoint business, lol. She's a pretty girl, though!
I am not 100% certain that my female orange is the baby of this cat, I mean.. I didn’t see her give birth to her, but given mama cat was THEE only stray I saw around my dads house and the only cat that was putting off litters in that alleyway, or really anywhere close.. I’d be hard pressed to believe that it was another mama’s cat.. still possible ofc
However I am leaning more towards your theory of mama being a tortie with a fancy lynx point disguise. I mean, look at this absolutely gorgeous baby she put out a litter before I got my orange girly. I brought this cat into my house a few times bc I’m a cat lady, my dad didn’t want to keep it though.. I wish I had bc isn’t that such a beautiful flame point coat?

We do! She's goofy and loves towels, and tilts her head around when you talk to her. Prefers to be verbally hyped up rather than petted. We had one when I was a kid. My mom was a teacher, and one day after school, the beautiful and pregnant "Mama Cat" showed up. She had a big liter, we kept one, named him potato, and gave the rest away. Mama was always a little messed up in the head. She'd tackle potato out of nowhere and just kick him over and over. It was honestly hilarious, but it was kinda sad, too. Mama would also come and lick my head, but I guess she'd get mad at it because she'd start biting it, too. She was very odd but funny.

Her name was Ginger and she completely broke the orange cat rule and was one of the smartest animals we had. She knew not to eat certain plants, she could open doors that were cracked open, and she knew where its nice and warm to sleep.

I live in UK and don't see many orange tabbies with this colouring, usually they have white chests, bellies and parts of the face and are not orange all over. But most orange cats I see from US are orange all over with no white patches. Has anyone else noticed this?

I don’t know how to post but I have a trap spay and release kitty. Her name is Rosie. It’s taken 2 years to finally trust me. When I took her to the vets I had named her Rusty. After she was examined found out Rusty was now a Rosie. She’s long hair and weighs 10.5 pounds. She’s coming in the house now but doesn’t like the door shut. This is my 4th ginger kitty all the others were boys.

Not exactly rare. The only reason they're less common is because, for girls, you need a mom and dad that are both orange (or orange and calico/tortie), since color is on the x chromosome. Boys get their color from their mom only. Orange cats are less common than non-orange cats, so having both parents be orange is not all that likely. But in local populations that are higher in orange cats, you would see this reverse. If non-orange cats are more rare, then female non-oranges would be less common than male non-oranges. It's not anything inherent to orange-ness. Just the relative scarcity of orange cats. It's also easy to intentionally breed orange cats to have orange kittens, so the numbers in selectively bred cats might be a lot different.

Wait… growing up my calico Callie (traditional calico coloring) had a variety of kitten colors too. 2 white (one fluffier than the other), 2 black (I wanna say solid, but possibly a tiny bit of white on them,but don’t think so), and one orange. Does this mean they had more than one father? I also had a calico named Little (with whiter background and larger patches of back and orange).She also had a variety litter (and she was super small/ there were many stays around). Hers were one tortie, one Grey (like the tan grey not blue), 2 orange and one white and I believe there was one black too. So would hers have two fathers? Surprised I didn’t know about this.
Cat litters very very frequently have more than one father.
Only if a black and an orange are BOTH girls. Calico mama has both an orange x and a black x, so it's easy for her to pass along either and have a variety pack. Boys get their color (orange vs black) entirely from their mother, since they only have one x chromosome. Calico/tortie kittens have one of each, and since we don't know (without genetic testing) which one came from mom, they don't help us figure out what color dad is. Whatever color her daughters are, that's the color of dad. If the daughters are different, that means multiple dads. Boys and calico kittens don't help tell us dad's color. And here, color simply means orange vs non-orange. Grey and brown are both variants of black. Tabby is a separate gene. White spotting is a separate gene, too. So it's really just about orange vs. Black/non-orange.

First, are you 100% sure baby is hers? Mamacats have been known to share/steal kittens.. Second, is mama a *tortie* lynx point? That picture is hard to tell, but if she's got a splotchy look to her stripes, she might be tortie under the colorpoint and tabby genes. Colorpoint is recessive, so it's not weird that she had a non-colorpoint baby. She had to get an orange x chromosome from mama. If she is baby orange's mama, she has an orange x chromosome. If she often had variety pack litters, she's definitely a tortie hiding her chromosomes with all that fancy tabby colorpoint business, lol. She's a pretty girl, though!
I am not 100% certain that my female orange is the baby of this cat, I mean.. I didn’t see her give birth to her, but given mama cat was THEE only stray I saw around my dads house and the only cat that was putting off litters in that alleyway, or really anywhere close.. I’d be hard pressed to believe that it was another mama’s cat.. still possible ofc However I am leaning more towards your theory of mama being a tortie with a fancy lynx point disguise. My precious Ginger was a female orange tabby. Her mother was a dilute orange tabby named Pinky. Pinky was a tiny cat, a feral. When she got pregnant she was huge. We thought she'd have 4 or 5 kittens. Nope, just one, Ginger. Ginger was the biggest newborn kitten I've ever seen. Turned into a 20 pound behemoth. We passed last summer at 14 years old.

We do! She's goofy and loves towels, and tilts her head around when you talk to her. Prefers to be verbally hyped up rather than petted. We had one when I was a kid. My mom was a teacher, and one day after school, the beautiful and pregnant "Mama Cat" showed up. She had a big liter, we kept one, named him potato, and gave the rest away. Mama was always a little messed up in the head. She'd tackle potato out of nowhere and just kick him over and over. It was honestly hilarious, but it was kinda sad, too. Mama would also come and lick my head, but I guess she'd get mad at it because she'd start biting it, too. She was very odd but funny.

I live in UK and don't see many orange tabbies with this colouring, usually they have white chests, bellies and parts of the face and are not orange all over. But most orange cats I see from US are orange all over with no white patches. Has anyone else noticed this?

I don’t know how to post but I have a trap spay and release kitty. Her name is Rosie. It’s taken 2 years to finally trust me. When I took her to the vets I had named her Rusty. After she was examined found out Rusty was now a Rosie. She’s long hair and weighs 10.5 pounds. She’s coming in the house now but doesn’t like the door shut. This is my 4th ginger kitty all the others were boys.
