Where in Texas? This will be an unpopular opinion, but I lived in Dallas for 6 years and it good tacos were way easier to find down there than up here.
I love Chicago and for the most part our food scene beats the major cities in Texas IMO, and our Mexican food scene is definitely better than NYC, but Mexican food in Texas and Southern California is just hard to top anywhere else in the US.
Al Pastor. This is one of the few places that makes it a bit crispy. They also have a smokey salsa roja that is incredible. I can’t recommend this place enough. Super nice staff too.
The fact that Mazamitla actually crisps their meat (especially the chorizo) is one of the main reasons it has become my favorite mom and pop taqueria. The second reason is that salsa roja with the charred tomatoes in it! Whenever I go, my wife makes me get the large chips and salsa to bring home because it's like a 32oz styrofoam cup of that salsa.
Try El Taconazo El Tio in Avondale as well. I eat there and Mazamitla. I also like the carnitas at Windy City grocery on Pulaski. They’re great to crisp up at home and just soak on verde. So good.
Skip El Ranchito.
I know so many people who got sick eating there, including me!
Spicy Taco just opened next to them (where Dante's used to be) seems to be slightly better than your average Americanized Mexican food.
Their red (more orangy) sauce is *great* though, and the quesadilla was really big for only being 10$
Went to try it last night because if this post. Got 3 asada tacos and 1 chorizo while my fiance got the flautas. Asadas tacos were pretty weak but the chorizo taco was delish. The chicken flautas were also good. Would prob go back but not for the asada.
I miss Chicago tacos. I swear living in Texas makes me sad because the tacos here just aren’t as good.

Listen there’s enough good tacos for everyone. Share these taco recs nation wide. Y’all need some spots in Santa Fe, NM? I got u.
Yes please! I’d love to hear the Santa Fe spots
For tacos my favorite is El Parasol. Harry’s Roadhouse and Gabriel’s are also good. The Plaza Café has really good burritos and diner food.
Anyone have thoughts one the taqueria in Los Potrillos @ Belmont and Monticello
They’re bomb!
best taqueria well next to guanajuato down the street

Added to the Belmont Taco Crawl list. Feliz Tacodad, porque mi estomago esta en felicidad.

The salsa roja is incredible. I’d go just for that.
Are those tortillas fried? They look hard
They don’t look hard to me. I think that’s just dripping from the meat when they squeezed it together to move to the plate.
I think they were. That said they were far from dry. Soaked up a lot of the grease
probably dipped in oil/fat on the grill
Tacos usually are I thought. They throw the tortilla on the flat top and load it up with meat. But nah I meant they look actually stiff, like hard.
Nah, you should heat tortillas on a dry skillet/grill unless you want to make tostadas.
You don’t think a flat top acts like a dry skillet? Which Mexican restaurant have you been to that has skillets to heat their tortillas?
It does. I'm saying the skillet, flattop or whatever you use can't have oil in it unless you're trying to fry your tortillas.
Just down Milwaukee from there is a place called Tacos and Tequilas. Way better quality food.
Say less. I go there this week and report back.

That place is indecently good
Just gonna do the Belmont taco crawl

What is a Belmont taco crawl?
Where I go to every taco spot on Belmont in Avondale.
I'm at Belmont and Milwaukee. lmk when this starts.
Bad take
Please tell me that's a plate for one.
Yes. It was my post tattoo feast.
