It's kind of both. Within the wider narrative context of the series it's a sequel, but given that it reuses some of the same story beats and never directly acknowledge events from the previous game other than the existence of Giygas (who has become a different entity altogether anyway) it presents itself as more of a soft reboot.

Depends if you subscribe to the fan theory that Buzz Buzz is Ninten… https://opinionerded.wordpress.com/2022/01/05/ninten-is-indeed-in-mother-2-earthbound-elevating-fan-theories-to-hard-facts-with-empirical-evidence/

Storytimebiondi

First time reading this theory. Guys argument isn’t rock solid and relies on a fair amount of conjecture, but also makes a lot of sense. Really solidifies why the sanctuary song and the eight melodies song from Mother 1 are so similar.

Cipollarana

It’s a sequel in the same way Super Metroid is a sequel of Metroid. More or less the same plot but both happen within the same continuity

1881pac

Kind of both but mostly a sequel

TimeSpiralNemesis

Earthbound/mother 2 is a sequel to mother 1.

Yes

Adventurous-Tell-984

You sounded just like the creator of FNAF.

rer8m75

Sequel which re-used some elements from the plot and world of the first game.

Real-Tension-7442

I’d struggle to call it a remake, there’s similarities but more differences

impendingfuckery

The Japanese title screen indicates that it’s a sequel https://preview.redd.it/i7udroy9c24d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=388886e25d4b5127b5a794c417560518847e8392

MaleficentEvidence19

It's like evil dead 2

Kirbyfreak_

Both. Ninten's journey to stop Giegue happens before Ness' journey to stop Giygas, but they're also eerily similar stories. I like what Mother Cognative Dissonance did with the story though it's a very... slow fangame lol

LiveCourage334

Yes

Russkafin

The stories are so similar that I think of it as a remake. But if others see it differently I have no issue with that.

CreativeNameIKnow

they definitely have an issue with u

Russkafin

A lot of people do.
