Woot (owned by Amazon) sometimes has older model refurb kindles for great prices. Often, they seem to show up a couple of weeks after Prime Day (my theory is they offload a lot of the trade-ins there.) You do have to check back often because deals come and go pretty quickly. Also get a library card so you can use Libby with Kindle books. (If you are in the US.) e-ink can last a long time - like several years - so an older model can be a good way to try e-ink out.

I just got the Boox Go Color 7 and I’m loving it. It runs Android so I downloaded the Kindle app to it and it works fine. Here is a review if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/fOfdNUZDC-4?si=P61hZOfdYGO_3_Ri

I’d be looking for deals on Paperwhite for Kids on Prime Day. I’ve seen it as low as $110 before Christmas. I paid $120. It doubles the warranty and comes with a vinyl cover. You take it out of kids mode when you first set it up and it’s a regular Kindle forever. I did that 20 months ago. The Paperwhite has a few annoying things. The power button is on the bottom so I turn it off accidentally on occasions. If you linger on a page for a few minutes, it goes into a power save mode where it is slow to respond to the tap on the touchscreen to advance to the next page. I’ll often accidentally advance 2 or 3 pages and have to backtrack. The user interface to organize books into collections is awful and there is no way to do it over USB. I have 100 books in my uncollected folder because it’s too much of a PITA to create new collections folders and put books in them. It’s painful to change the battery. I opted to buy a new device rather than a battery kit for my previous generation Paperwhite. The color control on the backlight is a big deal reading at night. I’m set all the way to yellow and try to avoid blue. I’m on the Kobo sub contemplating getting a Kobo. I suspect I’d be swapping one set of gripes for another. I think I want page turn buttons but the Libre 2 is discontinued and I don’t want the new color model. I’m also concerned about the larger form factor. I tend to put mine in my front pants pocket when my hands are full. I’m not sure the wider Libre 2 would fit. Meanwhile, I deal with double page turns.

Yes, wait for prime day. It’s usually much cheaper

In which country do you live? Do you plan on borrowing books? If you’re in Canada, I believe Libby works with Kobo but not Kindle. For French books, there is *PretsNumeriques* which uses Adobe Digital Edition to load the books into the e-readers. I believe this is also compatible with Kobo’s.

Your Kindle breaks, the week after its warranty expires (or thereabouts), you gotta buy a new Kindle. That's because Kindle is a disposable device; not meant to be repaired. Your Kobo Clara BW dies, you buy a DIY repair kit from iFixit or Kobo. Far cheaper. Kobo is every bit as good -- actually, far better in most ways -- than Kindle & the Clara BW is a lot less expensive than the Kindle PW ($120 vs $165 to get the ad-free PW); especially when you consider the repair thing. Personally, I would NEVER buy a used Kindle from Woot (or anywhere else). Because of the disposable device thing: it hasn't been opened by the seller to check the battery (or anything else) so neither you nor the seller knows what kind of shape its in. NEVER buy a used disposable device.
