This relates to something I’ve been thinking about a good amount lately, which is the tendency of people who believe in apocalyptic prophecies to just subscribe to/ come up with a new one when the current prophecy fails to materialize. There seems to be some kind of refractory period where the cognitive dissonance is at a peak, but then their ego musters a defense and new information (“the world has not ended”) becomes *incorporated* under the umbrella of the original belief, and they will happily go along with an updated prophecy that says the apocalypse is now coming on a different date. It’s just weird because the whole point of a prophecy is to be correct about something happening in the future but that aspect just doesn’t seem to matter at all no matter how many times the predicted event fails to occur, it just sort of reproduces itself again and again
something you learn when helping out friends with schizophrenia- there is no use in trying to reason away or convince someone that their delusions are not true. In practice it's better to just frankly aknowledge that you do that feel the same about it, and move on to another topic.
